Wait a minute... those aren't goblin green bases.
That image and argument are too modern to take seriously.
>>
>>55153333

What does /tg/ think is worse?

>Option A: Never having a chance to play WHFB and owning none of the models but getting interested in the game just before it was scrapped.
>Option B: Owning and playing WHFB for ages and seeing the setting scarped.

I myself never had a chance to play and feel a little sad I will never have a chance to see the game in it's prime.
>>
>>55153333
>Adapt to your opponent

But shouldn't your opponent also adapt to you?
What happens when both players become an amorphous mass?
>>
>>55153462
Option C: watch the shills and deluded cretins praise AoS
>>
>>55153491
>Option D: Stay salty for two years running
>>
Why Current Warhammer total war follows old lore and not AoS?
>>
>>55153499
>I can't like a dead thing
>>55153511
Because who the fuck wants to play that lore? Lol
>>
>>55153462
I went into a shop the other day and was so disheartened and uninspired by what's happened to this game. Just as I was about to rekindle my childhood interest and explore it to the max! The hub, the core, has rotten from the inside to the out.

Still, plenty of sources for models etc elsewhere.

I'm looking to do some LoZ moblin-style orc conversions —I'm sure I remember seeing bulldog miniatures with Bretonnians (or someone) in old White Dwarf mags, but I'm drawing blanks searching the web.

May end up simply sculpting the pig/dog jowls myself but would like to patch together existing parts as well —can anyone point me at any bulldog-ish miniatures they know of?
>>
>>55153527
You mean not even GW ups wanted to make a game to make current lore more popular?

They just don't care. AoS was just barely successful because 40k 7th sucked. Now their gold eggs chicken is back on track and AoS will just receive some bland update to Stormcasts from time to time
>>
>>55153604
>their gold eggs chicken is back on track
How? It looked just as bad as AoS
>>
>>55153642
8th seemed mostly successful so far, and people are swarming all over the new primarines
>>
>>55153563
>Option E
>>
>>55153511
Maybe because it was cheaper to buy the rights for a WF game than for AoS.
And because humans fighting over a magic planet (which is nonetheless is still grounded in reality) makes more sense for a total war game than infinite daemons vs the emprah's fury fighting over realms of infinite size
>>
>>55153642
>How?

It's the most popular edition ever.

>It looked just as bad as AoS

Maybe this is why Fantasy died/
>>

Where did I shill for GW?
Not being pissy two years later doesn't mean I'm pro AoS.
>>
>>55153661
Ehh, I'm not sure if it has the potential to become same kind of top dog as 40k was in the past. Many people are dusting their old armies to give it a go, but it's more like a secondary or tertiary game to many. Still better than not in consideration at all.
>>
>>55153511
AoS has no lore to speak of.

CA also recognized the absurdly high marketability in the Old World.

Probably B. Sure you might have a chance to move on, but there are all these memories tied to WHFB, and either way it'll be harder to find players and get the sort of games you used to have.

At least with A, you can stay focused on the setting for a little while without really forming a strong connection. When your interest wanes you go do something else - that's what I did during the End Times, though I obviously came back to the setting.

Disney, dude.

X-Wing is currently #1 and they just announced Star Wars Legion, their tabletop wargame to directly compete with 40k.

But I guess I shouldn't expect anyone to be up to date in /wfg/...
>>

Disney doesn't make mini games, the whole market is chump change to them. it's FFG who make it.

As for the rest X-wing isn't real competition, and Legions hasn't even launched and so can't be competition. It may become it, but frankly it's probably not the same scale for a reason.

Truthfully this is my first time in the thread, I've recently gone into a store to experience AoS (and the new 40K) firsthand, I was left disappoint by both

>buy it, get rulebook, sit in my own place learning to play
>go to Flgs when I muser the courage to play strangers
>get shit on because AoS is out and no one wants to play shitty whfb anymore

What makes it worse is none of my friends want to play. I built my own table and terrain and gaming room but everyone I know just goes "uh, yea I'll look it up" and just avoids talking about it. Fuck everyone, I just want to play. I literally played some solo games, just jumping to eacheck side, using beads for the enemy army as proxies.

Regarding that opening image, honestly, if the rules aren't emphasizing a fun game, you've got a fucked up set of rules. In particular, shooting happening after a move and the slayer losing points if it dies (the in-universe thing he's trying to do) are both highlights of the flaws inherent in the system. For a game that's supposed to prioritize fun over winning, they sure put a lot of emphasis on victory point accounting.

This, right there. Notice how it looks more threatening than most of those AoS big monsters? That's because he has a small head, a great number of small, sharp teeth and proportioned claws. Unexperienced sculptors usually put enormous claws and big teeth everywhere, a huge head and big limbs with a result called paedomorphism, meaning that the creature looks like a puppy and not a full-grown, threatening adult.
Just wanted to let you know this.

I like how the artists for Total Warhammer seem to be trying their best to emulate that style, though not going so far as to outright rip it off. And it's got a bit of a CG-type look to it, compared to the sharper pencil lines from the old art, which I guess is fair enough.

I downloaded several pdfs from WHFB 3rd edition, and lament there isn't a Oldhammer General, or /ohg/. I've browsed through (but not thoroughly) the rules for WHFB Siege and Mighty Empires and went hnnnnnggh at the heavy duty crunch rules. While the 6e General's Compendium is baller, it's crazy to see what Old-school WHFB was like.

Has anyone here played WHFB 3rd? I would enjoy the chance to give it a try.

Notable items, with various degrees of crunch or fluffiness:
-Pursuit was not all or nothing. If you caught a fleeing enemy, you got a free round of melee attacks that automatically hit. It would take time to run stuff down.
-You had turn-wheels for formations, and you had options for other formations including wedges and hollow squares.
-Fire was a threat and could spread across the battlefield, almost like a griefer-happy Minecraft server.
-Armies had to include a baggage wagon for every 1000 points. It was free and couldn't fight for shit, but the enemy got extra points for capturing it.
-Flyers were off on a separate "aerial field", well above the actual battlefield, and could re-enter it accordingly.
-Sieges had "tactical time" (a WHFB battle) and "strategic time" (downtime in the siege). In strategic time, siege engines could do slow volleys to grind the castles down, and both sides had to ensure they had points allocated to food or they started rolling for starvation, deserters, or Trolls eating other Greenskins.
-Boiling oil had its own template. Imagine an Apocalyse hellstorm flamer, with variable decreasing strengths based on range.
-Every Magic Item was DIY.
-Illusion Magic strongly recommended a GM, or else you would need a really strong honor system and notekeeping to let your foe know which regiments were real, or just hallucinations.

Mind you, 3rd edition was when the Realms of Chaos Books were written, and Daemon Weapons had a D1000 (3d10) chart to determine their abilities.

Oldhammer was when Bryan Ansell was in charge of GW, before it got bought out and made public. Perhaps the craziest thing about the 3rd ed book is that it has cardboard counters for models in it. Imagine modern GW doing that!

Don't forget how that art is used in-game - the CG aspect probably comes from the effects that are put over it, how it seems to pan in a direction or otherwise slide across the screen. And also how most are supposed to be seen in a rather small picture rather than how large they actually are.

I wish there was a full repository of TWW art, but I've only been able to find bits and pieces.

2nd ed 40k had a couple of vehicles right?

Around the same time 4th ed fantasy had some heroes on monsters and some war machines, Epic had a couple of the bigger titans.

I'm not sure if 3rd ed fantasy had the same ones but the box for 2nd ed fantasy has a sheet of cut outs too.
>>
>>55155140

Black Orcs were created by the Chaos dwarfs, and were a choice in their army back in the day. The ones that didn't rebel likely as not were the ones the Chaos Dwarfs had gotten worshiping their god.
>>
>>55157284
2nd ed 40k is...interesting. I missed out on it, as I started in 3rd, but I'm looking to try it out. Perhaps the craziest things about it, besides Virus/Vortex Grenades, and herohammer, is the fact that Bikes are vehicles, and Techmarines could pilot vehicles, letting you theoretically do an all-tank army (within "support" point limits of course). Bikes were vehicles too, so you could do a Sons of Anarchy build where every Marine Bike had a Hunter Killer Missile too.
>>
>>55157234
From giants perhaps
>>
>>55153462
I'm somewhere between A and B. I was more of a 40k guy back when I could afford the wargames but shortly before I fell out of the hobby I bought about 1,000-1,500pts of Vampire Counts and played a couple of short games with my 40k friends and didn't really keep building the army when I seemed to be the only one who really enjoyed WHF enough to want to do that. I was still into the settings despite real life making me unable to participate in the wargames so I picked up the video games and RPGs and that's been my main point of interaction with WHF and 40k for the past ten years or so.

I've gotten into WFRP big time recently and between Vermintide 2, TWW, and the upcoming WFRP 4e so they way I see it, despite everything, as long as you're not exclusively into the wargame it's still a pretty good time to be a WHF fan.

Oh yeah, the Mighty Empires rules look glorious, and like the sort of thing a computer game could be made from.

What was even crazier was that each "turn" in Mighty Empires was a month, each "turn" in a siege's "strategic time" was one day, and each turn in the battle represented a few minutes roughly. So this meant if you couldn't storm a castle fast enough, it could be relieved.

Siege engines are hilarious deathtraps too, but can also be combined, so you could have a Siege Tower launching Kamikaze Skyrockets. Oh yeah, 3rd had a Nippon armylist and one option was kamikaze rocketeers.
>>
>>55153462
Try option C: Owning 5 huge WHFB armies that were collected over more than a decade but never even once touched the battlefield because I never knew anyone to play with

And now WHFB is gone and it'll get harder and harder to find people to play it with as time goes on. I'll probably never be able to. Hell, even when it was around I couldn't play it. I just wish I knew someone else that was into it years ago.

I didn't play 2nd ed 40k directly past a small sample game or two in a GW store but I played Necromunda and Gorkamorka and bought the Nid codex to read cause I liked the beasties.

Stuff like the vehicle damage tables are a lot of fun, though I can imagine stuff like that are what lead to it being much more appropriate for a skirmish game than "big battles".

>>55157295

There weren't any that didn't rebel or if there were they were driven out as a precaution along with the rest after the Hobgoblins treachery stopped them bringing down the whole Chaos Dwarf empire.

The horns could be Hashut related but also back then helmets with numerous or large horns tended to signify a greenskin commander. Having every member of the magically and selectively bred elite with those really made them stand out as the best of the best when their armour was still a mix of plates and mail rather than the chunky armour suits they got in later versions.

Thanks to Undead being a staple of Fantasy you have a fairly wide selection, and different prices, to pick from.

GW still sell a shitload of stuff. Also there's probably a lot of second hand GW stuff out there from both Fantasy and Lord of the Rings which had some nice undead stuff (some might be out of scale but things like giant bats and stuff should be fine for sure).

For core stuff Mantic ain't too bad. I'm not super keen on the heads of their skeletons but they are relatively cheap. Their zombies and ghouls seem pretty good looking in addition to that nice price.

Not to mention you can also grab historical miniatures and with converting or sometimes even just the right paint job you can get them looking very dead.

Pretty much the only things that might be "difficult" to find non-GW/cheaper alternatives for are some of the monsters and even that shouldn't be too hard.

It is possible, yes, and some of the Norsca tech tree/bonuses are even about trading. But you do have to throw a lot of money their way. I rarely bother but in late game it can sometimes prove useful.
>>
>>55161071
It's possible, particularly as a faction like the dwarfs who get a bunch of diplomacy bonuses
Other typically friendly factions won't like you though due to the association
You could try making a nice-guy chaos campaign and trade with everyone/kill archaon but it would be a huge pain
Vampires and Wood Elves typically like 'evil' factions, as does skarsnik in my experience (but greenskins can't trade).

Yeah, as they're the equivalent of glade guards. But since elves are so stupid OP, you won't feel like a chump with most of your combat oriented rolls.

>WS
More like T. WS, BS and Ag can all by improved by +40% with comparatively accessable careers. T never gets higher than +25%, unless you're a top end Slayer or a Grail Knight when it gets as far as +30%. Dwarfs also start with more wounds and can roll 3 FP at creation.

People who complain about elves being OP don't realise that not all stats are of equal value.

>Mostly I hope they keep the original cast and add some new dudes instead of giving us a whole new batch. I've been playing a lot lately and I've gotten pretty attached to the gang.

There's also a slow-developing story thread to how the characters relate too, with Kerillian and Bardin gradually becoming friends, Kruber and Bardin quarreling over Kruber saying something ignorant and Bardin overreacting (with Kerillian shitposting about it), Sienna figuring out that Kerillian is cursed, Saltzpyre doing nice things for the party and lying about why/slowly warming to Sienna/possibly having a romantic interest in her

And they clearly are going somewhere with Lohner.

VERMINTIDE II CHARACTER IDEAS/WISHLIST
>tomb king skeleton with two handed kopesh that moves fast but is fragile, very pompous and slightly crazy
>Lizardmen saurus who does not speak any sort of english, scares the shit out of the rest of the cast. uses clubs, shield w/ weapons, and blowpipe
>Brettonian knight who not only is VERY uppity, but also insists he would be doing better if he had his horse. Greatswords, Lance, flails.
>Witch elf who is just fucking nuts. Knives, throwing knifes, poison, etc. Maybe has a life steal effect.

Yes, but they don't have bonus points in their WS or T, like the Dwarfs do, which is where it really counts.

The Charisma equivalent is the go-to dump stat in these types of games for a very good reason. You've got me at Agility though, but it can still be patched up by stacking Dodge Blow.

Which means they reproduce via spores which is supposed to make us think of 40k. However in 40k fucking squigs and mushroom patches are greenskins too, and you cannot get societies like savage orcs or night goblins since they would spawn the other types of greenskin.
It's just a Bretonnian decision.

I would trade my legs for a proper Warhammer Fantasy MMO.
All factions, all classes. Everything requires certain amount of effort. Good players can eventually grow into lords, champions of chaos, etc... band together with players of the same faction and form a clan/warband/royal family/whatever and go on conquests. You can fill your ranks with AI controlled mooks and raid "safe" places during events. Objectives, magic, skills, etc... Are all lore accurate. You can be a Dog of War and get paid to fight for other players, you can be a pirate and attack other players while they travel the seas, your "player warband" of Slaaneshi chaos warriors can fight against rival Khorne chaos warriors only to get backstabbed by the Skaven players you hired to help you.
Man, I'd even play a subscription for that shit.

Anybody in this general particularly got any experience with Mordheim?

Been looking through the catalog and seems the most related thread.

Was wondering if anyone has seen an attempt at making Mordheim advancement closer to Necromunda in that all units can use the advancement to its fullest extent.

Basically I'm wondering if there are any decent houserules for playing Mordheim with a full warband of heroes (Animals & Zombies still henchmen I guess)

Tom's Boring Mordheim Forum is still pretty active. A general agreement is that Skaven Slingspam is too good, so you really should up the terrain you have. However, Skaven also have superior Initiative so tend to also have an advantage in climbing, jumping from rooftops, etc.

A good houserule is your Warband should have a portable ladder or two, so armies like Dwarven Treasure Hunters or Orcs aren't as hosed.

If you look up Mordheim Fanatic, you should still be able to find the old Fanatic Magazine articles. Look up the Expanded Campaign Rules in particular and let me know if you give them a try.
>>
>>55169360
Pretty sure you can play with just heroes as is.
>>
>>55169461

I meant with regards to still having 15 units in your warband but them all advancing as Heroes. Similar to Necromunda's advancement.
>>
>>55169513
It divides heroes & henchmen on purpose, with the option to promote some henchmen via Lad's Got Talent. The biggest issue with an all-hero system is the exploration phase is tied to how many Heroes were not taken OOA in the previous battle.

Hired Swords are a weird case too. They have an Upkeep Cost, and the same Advancement track and post-battle injury rules as Henchmen, but they use the Hero chart for the advances proper. One of the largest differences between Necromunda and Mordheim is when you roll Skill as an advance, you get to choose (nonrandom). The "metabreaking" endgame build could easily be a Marienburg Band with each Hero having 2 Blunderbusses, Superior Blackpowder, a Lucky Charm and Leap. Of course, a sane campaign should end well before that occurs.

As a general rule too: Don't use the Arabian Merchant HS, as it breaks the game on technicality. Although he is an "official" HS, his abilities let you procure "unofficial" wargear from the Khemri Campaign. The Flying Carpet rules don't work with normal mounted rules and have a lot of roll-offs to determine how they actually work, and the Monkey Paw can screw with core mechanics, letting you gain extra heroes or hero slots...the RAW is shaky on that.
>>
>>55169886

Assuming a limit could be applied to the number of heroes used in exploration, such as only 6 can explore.

Would you be able to make Hired Swords and Basic Henchmen (Marksmen) functions extra heroes?

I'm not above putting effort into tweaking this if it could potentially work. I mainly want to know if there is anything I'm neglecting here.
