So does no FW mean no FW upgrade kits to make stuff look cooler? What if I play Ultramarines and want to actually make them look Roman?

So why do chaos contemptors get a 3+ save, but the imperial version gets a 2+?
Is it just made out of more gundanium than the chaos one or what?

And how did they manage to lose the lascannons for the chaos version?
Seems really arbitrary

Incoming blog post:
I wish I could get a permanent ban from /tg/ that blocked all access to the board, but moot removed that last bit and from what I've seen permanent bans tend to be site-wide. I need to get away from /tg/ though, but I can't help myself when I'm bored. But in the 9 years I've been here it's just the same shit. The buzzwords, names and specifics have changed, but it's the same 40k arguments over and over and over again. And yet I'm evidently here forever despite it.
At least there's art threads.

Whats the point of taking Assault Terminators with lightning claws when Tartaros Terminators can do the same thing and get an extra inch of movement?

Seriously, is there any reason not to take thunder hammers on all your AT's?
>>
>>55114563
I've been playing 40k since early 3e. Believe me when I say that idiots on the Internet have been saying GW is going to go under, Sisters are going to get plastics, and Sisters are going to get squatted since time immemorial.

>>55114553
Generally Chaos stuff is either heavily touched (i.e. ruined by the warp) or lacks the logistics to properly keep their 10,000 year old shit maintained properly.
>>
>>55114612
Even if Tartaros weren't introduced, lightning claws terminators would still be invalidated. People only took them for the extra attack and the ability to not go last, which are both invalidated now unless I'm forgetting something.
>>
>>55114612
They look cool? A lot of units still don't really fill a mechanical role well, so just take em if you like vanilla Terminators. You know, the best ones.

The worst part is that now internet aged authors are getting involved. But they do it through private internet accounts and sometimes come off as defensive and arrogant, like any other neckbeard who has found someone who likes or dislikes what he dislikes or likes and it's made the whole cycle that much worse.
Though to be honest, I didn't really notice it until Carnac showed up under his first guise of TIDF and we started having literally the same threads over and over which have only gotten worse with time.

Results may vary, most of em hit on 3s and will wound on 4s or 5s depending on the character. Since you're shooting for 6s for those sweet mortal wounds, more is better here. So if ya want to take snipers, take big squads of them.

>>
>>55115134
they are elite, but my vanguard is alpha legion havocs, dreads, and helbrutes so they have to stay in the generic battalion. I figured 35 pts for the whole squad if they can harass and distract a bit that is worth it. I could also plop them on an objective

Are there any IG that are supposed to be more or less American?
>>
>>55115825

Adeptus Sororitas came into conflict with the Sons of Malice, though they just ended up torching their shit and forcing them out of the Imperium. Actually, it seems to go that way a lot, at least for regular Astartes.

A few times the Sororitas have worked with the Grey Knights (not as armor paint, that was formally retconned), though their initial meetings are usually hostile since a secret, unlooked for Space Marine chapter just showed up and deployed in-force without any formal communications through the chain of command. Even the Carcharodons give a courtesy "Danger Close" when they enter the fray, that is if there's no enemy to charge into and start boarding/tearing to pieces to clearly display whose side just got the reinforcements.

Usually the Grey Knights just sing aloud parts of Imperium holy books and the Sororitas stop shooting because if a servant of Chaos spoke those holy passages aloud, their throats would catch fire.

It's made out of wood because Lion's name literally translates into German as something like 'Lion of the Forest' or 'Forest of the Lion' or something like that. So not a surprise it's wood. Also if we go off official art, he doesn't look like that. He does have long hair in this picture but the way it's drawn and coloured makes you miss it, he isn't short. Well the budget does help a bit. However what mostly puts us near the top is that we are always at war. We have more or less not had a period of NOT fighting some group in decades at this point. So between the budget, the number of soldiers fielded, and having experienced soldiers general America maintains its military might. But this has lead to way too much money being poured into the military rather than infrastructure.

You do realise the SAS are essentially always in combat in some part of the planet? We only found out they're in the Middle East due to a leak where they're fighting ISIS. Been doing it since Day 1 and were killing 30 a night with sniper rifles using quadbikes to get around. Sadly they said it's largely ineffective due to ISIS's command structure, but it makes the grunts worried and makes them cluster together more for easier bombing.

I still get pissed off with the Canadians using Special Forces and their high-tech .50cal sniper rifle to get the longest confirmed sniper shot kill back. They're obsessed with it. Canada produces insanely good snipers. It was originally Canadian, then a British guy did 3 shots, 3 hits, 2 kills (3rd shot was destroying an MG) in a row at the record range and he didn't know at the time. Canada got buttmad and used their special forces to get the kill back. That's like using CAG (Delta Force) or DECGRU (Seal Team Six) to fucking do it and then bragging your top guys can do top stuff. Most countries never announce their special forces operations or their results unless it's important (Osama Bin Laden kill) or outright impossible to ignore (Iran Embassy Hostage Situation).

To be fair, they do have good soldiers. The veterans are good at fighting those kind of wars. Trial by Fire, same shit that happened in Stalingrad, get good or get dead. It's just they're not trained to a high standard before they go into battle.

It's why it's such a shit show because it's difficult to fight a force that's armed one min, ducks into a building with civilians, hides his gun and becomes a civilian.

>>55116264

Speaking a Daemon's true name will cause you to lose your mind. Grey Knights have hexagrammic wards etched into their bones, and if they speak a Daemon's true name, those wards will start to burn to protect them.

It's often the opposite case where someone of profound faith or words spoken in service of that profound faith are anathema to Daemons and the servants of Chaos, and the effect works in reverse.

>>55116216

Not all the time. Sometimes they permit others to not be killed or mind-wiped. Mostly those are Space Marines with whom they have an understanding, like the Space Wolves post-Armageddon War II, or the Silver Skulls who send them choice recruits. I also suppose they could just masquerade as the Silver Skulls and pretend to be regular, ordinary Space Marines.

Sisters might be on that list, if only because they're largely incorruptible themselves and also profoundly faithful. If a Sister says she'll keep a secret, she's going to take that secret to her hallowed grave. Also I suspect there's Chamber Militant privileges; you work with the Inquisition, I work with the Inquisition, sometimes we see some weird shit, and cut each other a little slack.

It's a bit odd how it works. Often speaking the True Name will banish the Daemon back to the Warp, and sometimes you can divine when he'll show up again later. Other times, it just weakens it enough that you can deliver the killing blow with conventional weaponry. In rare cases, using a True Name in combination with some fantastic faith powers can truly obliterate a Daemon, causing it a true death that it's never coming back from.

Rumplestiltskin rules apply, but it's a forceful fucking over by their own rules. Also why Daemons often make their already prodigiously long name convoluted, and often writhing with foul and mind-fucking meaning so that anyone who tries to unravel it will have a hard time and also go crazy.

As I guy who started with 2nd ed, the link people draw between Tau and communism always seemed odd to me. I mean, I didn't know much about Tau (still don't, cause I don't care much), but back when I started it was the Imperial Guard that people would compare to communist Russia. Due to the wave after wave of troops, who cares if they all fucking die, mentality. I guess IG is just everyone from WWII now.

All bikes is a bikes of a trap for Scars in 8th. You want SOME bikes, but since you can only use Born in the Saddle once per turn spamming bikes doesn't scale too well. Further bikes have more more shooting capability than melee capability, so you'd generally much rather fall back and shoot with them than fall back and charge. This means the Ultramarines are actually the strongest tactic for bike spam. Where Scars happen to REALLY shine is jump pack troops and their fly rule. Between fly and the CT it means your jump dudes can freely fall back (or forward, through their screening dudes), shoot, and charge. Opening up really powerful shenanigans equalled only by Harlequins.

Hey guys,

I am a total 40k noob. I have a stupid question regarding a rule that I don't understand. Pic related.

Does this mean that if there is close melee combat going on. I fire a pistol into that combat, with a unit that is not part of it? Or is it only for the units engaged in the melee?

Sorry for the confusing question. It's probably simple, but it has me totally fucked...
>>
>>55116523
I know I made the link at first because of the memes, but it broke down quickly after actually reading the lore.
>>
>>55116548
Only if the combat involves his "own unit" (potentially including himself of course). Otherwise as written that rule does not apply.
>>
>>55116084
>no fast attack
???
What are you playing. Elites and HS slots are enough
>>
>>55116548
if you are within an inch it means you are engaged in close combat
units with pistols in close combat can shoot them at the guys they are fighting
a unit that is not involved in the combat cannot shoot into that melee because they are not allowed to get within 1 inch without chargeing

Not a cool list to take to a new player.

According to standard fluff, yes, that's what's claimed to be 100% the case. So I picked the Know No Fear set up on a whim on the way home. The models are actually pretty nice looking, even if they are monopose. I'm probably just going to use them for experiments in painting, but if I were to go all in on the Primaris Marines any advice? Aggressor and Inceptor spam looks fun and I dig the models.

Also, anyone painted up theirs in one of the Ultima Founding Chapter colours? I was thinking of giving it a whirl.
>>

I'd use them to fill whatever gaps are in your current force then; worst case scenario just load them in a Rhino or two with either melee or special weapons and have them unload/charge. They're not going to out assault Khorne Berserkers, but they're still going to throw out a lot of attacks and have better guns to boot, as well as being the more fluffy choice for Night Lords.

Stealthsuits are great for allowing your suits to deepstrike into flamer/fusion range via beacons, broadsides are decent ranged anti-armor and with target-lock/3markers they can fire on the move if needed, ghostkeels are pretty tanky and can draw a lot of threat if you want a distraction blueberry. Riptides are going cheap secondhand and are expected to get a buff when the codex drops so if you have a chance to grab one definitely consider it, as of right now they are overcosted but can still bring the pain (especially against hordes when using the HBC)

Draigo is the worst piece of fluff ever written for any faction and when a more competent writer tried to fix a few of his bullshit feats Ward rewrote "no they did happen and anyone saying otherwise is just in universe propaganda"

>>
>>55117443
>The guy in charge has absolute authority granted to him by the grace of the God-Emperor

Yes, that is how the Imperium works.
>>
>>55117447
What feats, exactly? Everything that Ward wrote has essentially be written over and over. The only thing that was officially retconned was Khornate Knights. Also Ward shouldn't have a fucking say, he quit GW, realised nobody likes his shit, then rejoined because MY SPIRITUAL LIEGE NEEDS ME.

Imagine a write off between Ward and ADB. Who would win in "oh my fuck what is this bullshit"?
>>
>>55117467
Why does it say Grand Masters can ONLY be appointed by unanimous decision between Grandmasters when Draigo can just warp it and go "ahtuchally, I don't like him. Put this guy in charge." and then warp off. Seems stupid. Had it said 'Supreme Grand Masters can make decisions if the need is great enough without consulting the other Grand Masters', I could get that and ultimately I assume that's what he did. But it's not SAID.
>>
>>55117473
I'm specifically talking about the "carved his name into Mortarian's heart" bullshit.
An audiobook tried to retcon by saying Kaldor knew Mortarian's true name which allowed him to perform such a feat, then Ward did a rewrite that stated he "didn't need to know the name of a daemon to slay it"
>>
>>55117502
Well either way is fine in my opinion. Mortarion was weakened anyway. As for true name, who cares? Grey Knights have killed shit without the need, the difference only is, if you kill a daemon, it might be a material realm 1 Terran year before they return, but if you do it with a true name, it's 100 Terran years. Mortarion dying either way is kinda irrelevant.
>>
>>55117473
>Imagine a write off between Ward and ADB. Who would win in "oh my fuck what is this bullshit"?
"I kill daemons regularly and managed to banish a daemon primarch after a long battle" vs "I outwill the four OMNIPOTENT Chaosgods and have a supermegaultra powerful daemon sword that can kill Primarchs by touching them and can easily kill the Emperor lol"
Not that Draigo isn't a bullshit character on his own, but Abadoobadoom is leagues above him, at least if you go full Carnac about it and chug the chaos kool-aid by the gallons.

Drach'nyen didn't look all that powerful, honestly. When they attacked it with a Cybernetica battlegroup, a squad of Custodes and a few tanks they almost dealt with it, and aside from the possession trick it was just a big stompy daemon. Same problem Abbadon and the non-Daemon Primarchs have, they show up to a big battle and they're going to look very impressive for the next three seconds before a Titan volcano cannon turns them from biology into physics.
Given we know that nuking a Primarch is pretty much a guaranteed kill from Istvaan V and the Traitor Legions know this because they did it, I'm surprised Guilliman survived the Indomitus Crusade unless he stayed on his flagship and used his magic strategy powers.

If I remember correctly from Dark Imperium he didn't really lead charges and just stayed back. Yeah, and it's made reasonable sense at the moment because it's not like Chaos was set up for Guilliman at Ultramar and Luna, and we can assume he spent most of his campaigning time generalling about the place rather than wasting effort hitting things with a sword.
If we wind up with all the Primarchs charging headlong into battles I'm going to start wondering how long it would take before someone decides to bury a nuke or warpbomb under their bases, though.
Primarch, Custodes or enough Marines show up, just blow the place and be done with it, it's not like DarkMech outposts, random Renegades stuff or power plants aren't way less replaceable than Primarchs.

That is the problem with having minis for everyone. Then again, I think that minis could be atemporal so they could be more bold with the plot because otherwise we just get what we have now. An empty bloated shell where everything seems doomed but nothing really ever changes.

They could kill off important but secondary characters such as Calgar or Cato (fingers crossed) since you talked about smurfs. There are some inquisitors ripe for betrayal or heresy. the T'au are asking for a large scale civil war.

They dared to kill Cadia which was nice for a change.

So I was looking to dust off my old Deathwatch army for 8th and got to writing up a little 1500 point list. I went to make my little 5 man stalker bolter team and noticed that drop pods are 100 points now. Is it even worth taking them for small units or should I take a razorback?
>>
>>55117926

Yeah, no shit I could have not taken the detachment, but isn't the whole point of having detachments available that you, I don't know, use them while you're playing? Like, to give your army a structure? If I'd had formations it would have been much easier to piece together bonuses and make a more cohesive and effective unit. What is the point of having CP if they are less effective than just hobbling whatever together?
>>
>>55117940
RBs are better. Pods are for things like Leviathans now.
>>
>>55117877
mutation rates are calculated to be around 0.001% even in the most inestable gene-seeds according to Based Cawl.

Which just means it is a matter of time until there is a chain reaction of fuckery fuck.

In Dark Imperium there is that one new Primaris captain who is so new that almosts falls to khorne without realising until an old psyker metaphorically slaps him back to his senses
>>
>>55117940
drop pods are pretty much not worth the trouble nowadays
dont forget to pack some frag cannons along for the ride on that razorback/blackstar/land raider
>>
>>55117943
Not at 500 points, moron.

>but isn't the whole point-

The whole point of building a good army is to build a good army, not build a shitty one just because an option was available, then complaining about how shitty the shit option was.
>>
>>55117877
It was mentioned ages back that part of Cawl's achievements were curing the flaws in the more eccentric genelines. Space Wolves no longer turn into Wulfen, Blood Angels no longer suffer from the Flaw, Black Templars are no longer angry all the time because of that problem they had with their geneseed.
>>
>>55117935
Well, they do sort of have this anyway, with guys like Captain Tycho and Creed. But they're not really important/could just come back anyway. Nukeing a Primarch from orbit doesn't leave much room, except "And then he teleported away and was safe".
>>
>>55117950
I run frag cannons in my big boy squads, I liked running a 5 man squad with stalker bolters to drop pod to a point and sit there like a grumpy old man taking pot shots at anything that came within 36".
>>
>>55117953

The fact that it is useless at ANY size of an army is my point. Formations made a notable difference at all point levels.

yep, its an Autarch; your space marine captain equivalent basically, but with a decent selection of aspect warrior wargear to choose from which is nice.

Wave Serpents are still pretty nuts, and good for vomiting out Wraithguard/Fire Dragons. Most of the Aspect Warriors can put work in in some capacity. You've also got a pretty good psychic game going on.

As for specifics, the 1d4chan tactics page is an alright start so long as you take it as the opinion of a couple of anons and not gospel; just use it to familiarize yourself with what units are available.

Finally unlike Harlequins and Dark Eldar where its a good option but not an auto pick,Ynnari Craftworld Eldar are leagues above standard ones, so consider them as an option.

>You mean the bolters

>>
>>55117866
>>55117834

I know they'd never do it, but I kind of want them to kill a couple Primarchs off properly. It would up the stakes nicely, since at the moment Guilliman and Friends exist to invalidate everyone else and then get into inconclusive duels where noone will even come out maimed if it would last until the next book. That's more a particularly wimpy wrestling plot than a galaxy-wide war.

Having the Tau or the DarkMech or even just some random no-name Chaos Lord or Magos ice a Primarch with some clever tactics would make things a little more dramatic and possibly erode the whole "I can predict how all these fights will go the moment they start" thing which I suspect most of us can pull off by now.
>>
>>55118046
>FROSTSAVAGE RIPPERGUNS
Do you mean Frostsavage Wolfguns? It needs the word wolf.
>>
>>55117965
Absolutely, that is why it's so hard to write in a setting where pretty much everyone has doomsday devices.
It shouldn't be so hard to highlight the fact that "the battle was raging as fierce in the planet's orbit thus making orbital bombardment impossible and cutting further reinforcements short. Troops would have to escape by their own means or hold fast and perish against the daemonic tide pouring from the opened portals".

There, no one can nuke anything and you got the basic layout for a heroic last stand or critical intervention by an unlikely ally ready to be spoiled over by utter fan-wanking bullshit

they have 8inch range and you normally want to deepstrike the scions. Which means more than 9' away........

its the Gun they gave it in place of the Kill Kannon because for some reason they didnt want them to have a Kill Kannon anymore but needed a gun for the Kannon arm model on the website
>>
>>55119080
Yeah I have two squads who will be operating independently of each other, one has plasma and also a Tempestus Prime for orders to keep the plasma guys from blowing each other up, I have a second who's operating with an Inquisitor so I was thinking something that doesn't really rely on the miss re-rolls so bad would be good so I was thinking flamers or volley guns.
>>
>>55119115
Which makes no sense as Rattler is supposed to be like a gatling gun.

well
they might work, especially as a deterent against weaker melee units due to overwatch.
However you might consider a cheaper unit. Scions have BS3+ and you pay for that.

I liked 3rd edition tomb spiders and monoliths more.
The phase out rule was a neat way of making people use balanced armies.
There were also lots of cool minor things, like how a warscythe even penetrated invulnerable saves.
Necrons as a whole were a lot more elite back in 3rd, which I also liked.
>>
>>55119098
yeah, he has a lot of money and pays people to paint his armies so that is not a problem for him.

Some people really enjoy painting alternative schemes and right now, until the ad mech codex is out, any non-mars army is in disadvantage if they cant use Cawl.

Just noticed this while the Meka-Dread talk was around. The model has two weapons on its torso that used to be big shootas. It no longer has that on its profile.

However it has Rokkit Pods/Bombs.... that it isnt equipped with.... and no option to add them.....

Depends. If it's a competitive game at a competition, then it's WYSIWYG or GTFO. I hate compo players that write their OP lists, then bring nothing of the sort to the table and say "counts as". If you want to WAAC, then you better MAAD as well, or you're just a fucking faggot who doesn't want to commit fully to their army. They do it because they want "flexibility" to chop and change when the FAQs some out. Fuck off.

If it's a casual game for fun, or a game to test out new shit, then I'd let me opponent proxy a genestealer as a Swarmlord if he wanted to. Obviously I'd make him agree that the genestealer won't be hidden behind certain shit since it's pretty easy to tell how big a model is on the table relative to terrain.

Right now running Bloodletters, Flesh Hounds, Crushers and a Herald as my HQ. Thinking about adding some Berzerkers, swapping the Herald for a Lord on Juggernaut and getting some kind of big gunz, not sure what yet.

Thoughts?

And they use this money to invest in more goods and products and turn them into non-liquid assets. Then they pay every single last worker in the company using whatever little liquid assets they have left. And the rest that remains if any is kept as liquid assets in the company so that they don't go bankrupt. Business 101.
>>
>>55119813
>model comapnies like Tamiya and Takom
Have incredibly high economies of scale. Remind me how well 40k does outside of the Western world again? Then look at the percentage of the Japanese population (just Japan only, let's exclude all the other east asian countries like Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong etc. that also consume their products at incredible rates) that buys their goods and look at the percentage of the population in the UK (and hell if you want the US) that buys GW products. Mkay?
>>
>>55119116
I generally run it with four Primes, that way I can fit in four Command Squads, usually two plas, two volley, with infantry mixed in as well.
>>
>>55119813
>>55119876
Additionally, consider this: Both GW and Tamiya produce painting products such as, well, paint, glue, brushes, modelling tools etc. But the key difference is, people buy Tamiya paints and co. irregardless of whether or not they actually buy Tamiya's model kits. Whereas GW only gets to sell their stuff when cross-selling it with their models. In other words, GW's paints have a ridiculously high cross-elasticity with their models whereas Tamiya's don't. See how this works? Tamiya sell such an infinitely higher amount more of product per annum than GW that they could basically not care about profit margin at all and still make plenty of cash.
>>
>>55119729
I've heard mixed things about the Juggerlord, one of the problems is that he doesn't qualify for several of the World Eater benefits as he's not classed as infantry. He does count as a daemon though, so he'll get the buff from a Herald at least.

Grey Knights themselves are protected by a total info blackout by the Inquisition, they themselves don't require the execution or mindwipe of any witnesses

Mass executions tend to be for large bodies of people or soldiers where they've all been dangerously exposed to the warp and there are simply too many to test each individual, thus the only way to ensure purity is to kill or mindwipe everyone

So, 50 sisters fight alongside Grey Knights (like what happened in the first ben counter novel)? Tested, expected to pass and let go with a vow of secrecy.

5,000 guardsmen fight off a daemonic invasion while the grey knights close a warp portal? Well they're probably dead from daemonrape already but the survivors are going to be mind wiped at the very least, mercifully.
