What are good ways to work out duels, aside from having them just roll combat rolls over and over?

Besides a skill challenge? Have them roll three attacks, total them up, higher number wins

There's this system for Iaijutsu duels from 3.5.

This sounds good, but maybe just force the characters to describe their blows
If its two PC's, they'll probably have enough health or AC to shrug off or outright dodge most incoming attacks, so you'll have plenty to describe.
Reward players for describing shit in a way that sounds cool, but not too gary stu or whatever, like he accepts his limits
Build a narrative, have a story, its fucken roleplaying

I'd sooner have the GM describe it, but that's just personal preference

Well the player should describe what they want to do
>I grab his arm to pull him off balance, and drive my sword into his chest
Then the GM can describe more floridy as to what actually happens

I feel like D&D isn't really made for 1v1 combat but if you had to then make it a skill challenge as >>55113057 mentioned. Make the duel about getting into position for an attack, not the attack itself.

I want to see a trial by combat in a world where gods exist have the outcone actually determined by god.
>Party fighter pulls some fucked up shit and gets jailed
>Demands trial by combat which is allowed on the grounds that the winner is determined by god
>Because he's guilty he actually is incapable of winning.
