I've seen some lists with Thundermaw or Strombreath, should I drop Lavamancer for a big bomb like that? A singleton Venser would also be pretty spicy, thoughts? Is Resto completely out of the picture or do some lists still use it? I imagine Queller took it's place.

Punish/Ratchet etc is a safer play though, especially with just Hunted stuff. I think if you were to go full Eater of Days then she'd be worth it.

Crime/Punishment is a bad card, I'd start with cutting that. You want at least 10 creatures because while they're big creatures, they aren't game-ending like emrakul or primetime.

Explosives is colorless and is a permanent that you can crack when you need it. You also have pulse.
What might be a good idea is go heavier on the discard suite so you can have a good turn 1 play 70% of the time, it helps with your curve. Turn 1 thoughtseize take their interaction into turn 2 orb into turn 3 creature is a beautiful curve for that deck.

You need answers. At least get a full set of Duress in MB so that you can pick out all of the problematic cards before they hit. Inquisition isn't bad, either. Ghirapur Aether Grid could be SB to fight back against Stony. Dual lands are also recommended such as Scrylands or checklands, since I assume you are running on a budget.

Red gives you Norin, which can outtrigger Genesis Chamber. It also gives you Purphoros and Impact Tremors, but the sweet stuff that you could use is Burn at the Stake for a finisher.

Green gives you the 3rd soulsister and everything else you listed is either too slow or lackluster.

Magic had novels, new ones haven't been made for a long time. There's little pieces of story on the WotC website.

they sure do, there's novels for every block up until Theros I believe, and the rest has stories published on the Wizards site. The weatherlight Saga is the most iconic MTG story and it's decent overall with a strong beginning but a fumbled ending. Start reading with the Brothers' War and go from there if you're interested in early magic.

As for playing, you should try to find someone near you who plays and let him teach you. they'll likely have a spare deck that you can use and someone holding your hand for a bit when starting really helps learning the game.
If you want your own deck, consider getting Mono Green Stompy. It won't win you tournaments but it's still a good deck and pretty easy to use.

Inspiring call seems kinda slow and Tezzeret's gambit might be too cute.
If you're fine with throwing all your money away and scooping to blood moon you might want some black for Winding Contrictor, even if he's not a human. It just seems like a bad idea for your aggro deck to be built around 4 1-of copies of Hardened Scales to really go big.
You can even have the snake be a 4/5 if you played Simic Initiate turn 1 to be a bit more resistant to bolt if they don't have mana up.

I don't like to spend too much on my manabase, so I like to keep it 2 colors. Inspiring Call is more useful for its protection than the draw, I don't think 3cmc for mass indestructiblility is bad. You're super right about Initiate though. Campion of the Parish and Thalia's lieutenant seem strong enough to work in an aggro set even without Scales so I'm content in having just 1 set of counter boosters in this deck. My curve is low enough for me to go wide instead of wating for my guys to get fat enough. I was playing standard at my local LGS with some of the modern regulars and standard players. (I'm still waiting on 4 more cards in the mail for my modern deck). The modern players where talking about some specific decks and when I tried to join in they would just cut me off repeatedly. I decided quickly not to bother trying to talk to them anymore, however soon after one of them mentioned a "mouth breathing retard who loses every game" clearly directing it towards me.

What are some reasonable ways of dealing with this toxicity? I like my LGS outside of this small clique within it, but they've never been this bad before.

It's a very good idea, it's another small piece, togheter with the art and the card itself, that makes people fill the gaps with their imagination. This is actually one of the reasons why I liked Magic in the beginning even if I didn't play, back in the early 00's.

That aside, yes. It's what's known as an activated ability, which is almost exactly the same as an instant in how it works. The easy way to identify them is by the colon. Everything to the left of the colon is the cost of using it, so on your example the cost is sacrificing Phantom Wings, and everything on the right of the colon is what the ability does, which here is returning the creature that Phantom Wings was on to its owner's hand.
