You know, I always had this mental image of some adventurer who had just died. His wife is standing in the graveyard, quietly crying. They never had much money, but they were happy, and she loved his daring tales of adventure.

A hand is placed on her shoulder and she starts to say that she'd rather be left alone when she realizes it's a skeleton. It delicately places some ditch flower it picked nearby on the grave, then just sits with its head on its knees to stare at the grave.

Next come the kobolds. She watches in bewilderment as they place copper nuggets on the grave. They spare a glance at the skeleton, who nods. That's some relief to them, but they still look sad.

She recognizes the shattered sword that the massive orc lays on the grave. The elfen-looking creature with the sharp teeth lays down a scroll, tears in its eyes. One by one, these monsters pay their tribute.

Eventually, she finds herself sitting next to the skeleton. She isn't sure when she ended up leaning against it, but she doesn't mind. It's quiet, it doesn't mind her being there, and she needs... something.

"I miss him so bad," she whispers.

"So bad it hurts," the skeleton agrees.

And that's all that I got with it.

I'm sure I'll get shit on for this, but I found Discworld impenetrable. I started at book 1, and within two chapters I was utterly confused. It didn't help that he spent a good chunk of the opening describing the physics and seasons and stuff, when I was really only signing up for fantasy adventures. I'm sure there are some great characters and stuff, I don't think people are making up how much they enjoyed the series, but I just could not do it.

I started in the Tiffany Aching books (which focused on a much smaller slice of the world to start) and then went back, so I found the experience less confusing.

Don't start on Book 1 (The Colour of Magic). It suffers from the same thing that every first book of a series does: the author doesn't have a bunch of their own books written as experience.
There are a lot of smaller series in the whole that follow particular people (The Night Watch ones are the ones I started on), and a few stand-alone books that you can read whenever.
If you're willing to try it again, read "The Truth" or "Unseen Academicals". I can't guarantee that there's no world-building infodumps, and you kind of have to piece together what exactly some of the things mentioned in the background are, but they're pretty easy to read and solid books.

It suffers more from the fact that the author only originally intended to write a tongue in cheek story, not a massive series. He never expected to have to come up with ideas that would carry on past that book and the first few for that matter. The Patrician in particular comes off a little out of character then in later books, I could be wrong and heavily mistaken but I recall getting the impression that brooms for witches were a new fangled fad in Equal Rites but then they seem to be treated as a very traditional witch thing that been around forever.

My first Discworld book was Feet of Clay, picked up entirely at random off a school shelf. From there is was scatershot until i had read all books published up to that point in time... and then i only had a scant two decades to enjoy his works as they came out.

Those are NOT what we call them in this region. But wow, that actually tells me a lot more about the history of this instrument that I grew up around.
