What have you done with the powered armor rules? Have you homebrewed powered armor at more levels? Used them for mecha?

Wanting to run a Usual Suspects style campaign but not sure if I should run it on Absalom or pick one of the other planets like Akiton for it. Absalom seems like the more fun choice, plus it has the ease of being a central hub area for a lot of people/corporations so it could work a bit better, but I feel like just about every campaign under the sun is going to start there.

depends on what kinda of creatures you want.

You know, I am wondering if drow can make good solarites. It would be a nice contrast.

I don't think a solar weapon is normally finessable, though. Maybe there will be a feat or something in the bestiary book.

Start in Akiton and go to Absalom as your big break from the starting quest.

Starfinder Society Scenario 1-01: The Commencement has a very cute quest within it.

>Diplomacy DC 10+: The latest prerelease song from sugar-pop sensation Strawberry Machine Cake is about to be released. Unlike previous releases, the band is putting out a limited-edition physical copy prior to the concert when the released single and additional tracks are scheduled to debut and become available in digital form.

>“My second assignment...” Zigvigix twitches their tooth barbs for a moment and then holds out a credstick. “Please buy the brand-new Strawberry Machine Cake album, Star Sugar Heartlove!!!, which is out today, and give it to Historia-7 when you see her. She is the head of the Dataphiles, so you should meet her today! I wish to do it myself, but I... I have trouble standing for long periods of time. Thank you very much!”

>Strawberry Machine Cake Follow-Up: If asked about the new Strawberry Machine Cake album, Zigvigix says that Historia-7 has seemed down after losing her mentor in the Scoured Stars. They hope the sugar-pop music can cheer up the android; Zigvigix adds that the band’s music always makes them feel better. They go on to gush about favorite songs, expressing regret they cannot hear the newest releases, as the shirren finds it incredibly difficult to stand in the long lines.

>If a PC succeeds at a DC 17 Sense Motive check—or an astute player voices the observation without a roll—the PCs may note that Zigvigix is not buying a copy for themself. The shirren’s response makes it clear that despite their obvious desire, they downplay their opinion when it might benefit themself and seem uncomfortable spending money on their own personal wants—an oddity for the highly individual shirrens.

So long as the PCs do so, they get the album, but they must succeed at a DC 12 Fortitude save to avoid becoming fatigued, followed by a DC 11 Reflex save to avoid taking 1d4 bludgeoning damage from the exuberant crowd on the way out.

>The PCs can each buy an extra copy of Star Sugar Heartlove!!! for themselves, but they must pay 50 credits for each additional album. Similarly, the PCs can pool credits together to purchase an additional copy for Zigvigix. If the PCs later give Historia-7 (see page 9) the music album, she gives them a long, unreadable stare before calmly stating she will enter it into the archives.

>Treasure: If a PC buys an album for Zigvigix as well as for Historia-7, the shirren squeals in delight and offers a single charge cloak as a reward.

For context, Zigvigix is the commander of the Exo-Guardians, the most militant of the Starfinder Society's subfactions, and here they are, asking the party to buy a sugar-pop music album for themselves and for the straight-laced leader of the society's information brokers. Zigvigix probably has a crush. It is probably unrequited love, alas.

Find out what stores are participating in the pre-release special.

infiltrate and hack the store's computer to see when the shipment arrives and plan a couple of contingencies:

1. Have one person stealth their way to the front of the line and make use of memory altering spells while the others sleep to make it seem that person was always there and then have the mechanic send their drone to bring rations as need be.

second plan is to actually "steal" the disk but also leave payment in the process. This seems more of a job for the operative and the technomancer (myself) altering records and slipping the needed credits for the disk into their registry (that said, I also have an in to a store's bank information for later use).

Final plan would be to single out, corner, and bribe one of the event goers for their copy. If I have the clout to do so I arrange for a meeting with Strawberry machine cake otherwise ample memory alterations and illusions to create the effect.

Gravity grenades!
>>
>>55096755

In Chronicles of Riddick it seems like the gravity weapons were just pulses of energy that crushed whatever they contacted. Perhaps the gravity grenade just creates a crushing force of singularity that, if it outright kills the target completely destroys the body?

That said, something like Art of the Peircing Void should be something Solarians can do.

Agreed. Perhaps the Gravity Grenade could be an area denial weapon. Once it goes off the core of the grenade forms the singularity for a while and anything that gets within it's range takes bludgeoning damage. I don't believe there are any other grenades that do anything like that and would make for some interesting tactical scenarios.

>>55096919

Nothing says we can't add onto it. Maybe if you're within 5 feet of the area of effect you have to make STR or Dex checks to get pulled in and STR checks to get out if you are. Even so, with something that potentially powerful it should be rare or epensive to get and something you would consider using at desperate moments rather then a de jour combat tactic.

>tfw can't do a Solarian Power Armor

Damn. Probably OP but I'd love that shit.

So. Lets assume I want to do a Destiny Home Brew, what classes would fit for what Class/SubClass in Destiny? I'm gonna play it loose with the setting so as not to restrain players too hard, but I figured like, a Soldier with Guard is gonna be a Titan and such.

Solarians are Warlocks, obviously.
>>
>>55097282

I would say it's best not to try and fit the constraints of Hunter/Titan/Warlock esepcially when you consider they weren't all that important during the Warlord/Iron Lord era. That said, I'd certainly say steal everything else.
>>
>>55097080
Really I'd suggest really high damage in a 5ft area and then for a 10ft (or even 15ft) radius save or get bludgeoned and/or knocked prone around the detonation point as you're tossed, things hit you or both.

Probably Dex to avoid the singularity (if you're the lucky sap addressed 'to whom it may concern') and then Str for everyone close taking flying/dodging lessons.

Of course, a clever player could use the pulling affect to throw mooks out windows/airlocks and off tall things.
>>
So would you say this game is good? How is the Solarian class?
>>
>>55097586
>Of course, a clever player could use the pulling affect to throw mooks out windows/airlocks and off tall things.

The thing is, would it hover in place then detonate or would it have to hit the ground then activate? I see what you mean chucking it out the window and defenestrating mooks but it would be a waste if it only activates after physically impacting something. Then again you could do some sick throws and bounce it off of something first I guess

Also, going back to Solarians throwing balls of gravity I was immediately reminded of Destiny 2's new Nova Bomb

As Early as we are into this, How many people have made homebrew for this game?
>>
>>55097681
I actually was thinking how incredible it would be as a sticky grenade to depressurize a ship. Throw it, it sticks to a wall or window and you badly injure or kill everyone close and everybody who's not tied to something has help finding their way out of the hull breech.

Something like that would probably need various fuse modes for utility, but it would definitely be a fun toy. Use as a motion activated proximity mine would also be fun. If I were looking to make it as hilarious as possible, I'd make it arm on contact or on a timer, then explode either instantly, on detecting motion or on next contact.

Of course such a complicated detonation mechanism would make it expensive (though, we're already talking about a mini-singularity device) and means it's plenty easier to fire it from a launcher at a group of mooks and call it a day than set it in the middle of a firefight.
>>
>>55097800
I have a full conversion of Pathfinder homebrew which allows(limited) use of PoW, SoM, SoP, and Veilweaving, along with personal ship-based feats that I think are balanced.

Bows SHOULD suck. The bows in Starfinder should be in a monster statblock for when you encounter angry savages in extremely undeveloped worlds. The idea that guns need to balance with bows is whatever in Pathfinder but absolute nonsense in this setting.

Sure, if you are using a low tech bow you'll suck (I didn't give any of the variants for the level 1 bow) but this gives sci-fi options for people to grab.

But well, if the starknife and elven curve blade made the translation to sci-fi versions there is no reason the bow can't.
>>
>>55098665
>>55098688
They already fill the niche of silent low-tech grenade launcher. Add to grenades and you add to bows.
>>
>>55098688
I disagree. Not like, from the standpoint that bows should be on the same level as advanced firearms, but that a modern compound bow has unique utility and function that might make it a good tool when pure destructive ability is what you're after.

Bows are naturally relatively silent and with the improvements of space-age technology and magic I can only imagine them being quieter. Using one to launch some kind of payload may also be very useful, or to affix ziplines and other gear. In a zero-G environment, bows remain consistent and their analog nature makes them practical when fancier gear fails.

Will it outclass or match a firearm? I don't thinks so, but "suck" is too harsh a word. I can see them dealing one-hander damage or perhaps a little more without a lot of the gimmicks and extras of the heavier firepower, but the added versatility pays dividends.
>>

>Add to grenades and you add to bows.

Have you seen the grenade arrow rules? They are 'As a grenade of level -5'. A level 20 grenade arrow does literally half the damage of a level 20 grenade for a much higher cost.
>>
>>55098742

>Will it outclass or match a firearm? I don't thinks so, but "suck" is too harsh a word. I can see them dealing one-hander damage or perhaps a little more without a lot of the gimmicks and extras of the heavier firepower, but the added versatility pays dividends.

Design-wise I tried to put them as a middle ground of longarms(In particular, the hunting rifles) and sniper rifles. They have snipe but not to the same degree as a sniper rifle and are not as long range without snipe as a longarm. The end result is (Intended to be, at least) a very versatile weapon without quite being as perfect in a given situation as another weapon.

So what's the positive/negative bits of Power Armour? I haven't read the equipment part of the book yet.
>>
Is there a Starfinder PDF that's actually got links in it to individual elements rather than broad categories?
>>
>>55098870

The positive: It's really cool, replaces your str score and changes your size.
The negative: There is basically zero of them statted right now. Only 2 ones for actual combat.
>>
>>55098754
at three times the range, using DEX to hit instead of STR, and with Quick Reload.

The cost thing is typical 3PF item "balance" BS, hardly unique to grenade arrows.
>>
>>55098870

I'm not an expert but well, you gotta have them be powered of course, and take a feat for them (some classes give it)

But they can load weapons onto them, as well have unique power armor upgrades like shields and autoloaders.

There's a Soldier style that focuses on using them too, which looks fun as fuck.

I dont know, I"m not a stat munchkin though so I dont know if they're 'bad' or not. But damn are they cool.
>>
>>55098928

A grenade launcher is basically better than grenade arrows for anyone that can use them (And since everyone needs to take a feat to use bows, it's just as much an investment for a lot of people). 6 in the drum at level 1 and you get the full damage (Rather than half like grenade arrows), later upgrading to further range than the bow and 12 in the drum.
>>
>>55098931
I don't think Autoloaders do anything currently, since I don't believe there's anything saying that loading weapons in power armor is slower. So it's a Move anyway.
>>
>>55098863

I kinda lifted the idea from shadowrun.

Double tap and Burst fire giving a flat damage/accuracy bonus seems a lot easier to do than say multiple hits.

Though there was the idea presented to me to have burst fire do "Splash" damage as well. Bit iffy on that.

>>55098856
Maybe, but as it stands right now, there aren't that many Automatic weapons. And Since Automatic's original feature is... a little niche to begin with. i figured an extra little edge would be cool.

I haven't play-tested it at all however.

Same thing with Fast Hands and Clever Grip.
I notice there was no rapid reload feat, and people who want to try to make Fusillade work have a huge amount of investment for very little pay off.

I think i might look into that feat too.
>>
>>55098993

Perhaps make burst fire turn it into a Line weapon like how Full auto turns it Blast? So you basically get 'Low ammo, least targets', 'Moderate ammo, moderate targets', 'All ammo, most targets'
>>
>>55098988

I suppose thats true.

Also I see Androids can get any Light Armor upgrade on their own person free, does that include Jump Jets and Jet Packs? Thats cool as hell but seems kind of OP.
>>
>>55099024
Recall that they only get ONE slot, some things take up more than one. I think jetpack costs 2, I can't recall if jumpjet does or not.
>>
>>55099024
They still have to buy the upgrade to install it, they just have a bonus armour slot essentially.
>>
>>55099050

Oooh, right! Completely overlooked that! Looks like they both only fill up one slot though. But if its not free, then thats fair.

>>55099070

Oh its not free? thats fair.
>>
>>55099014

I can see the reasoning, but i think that basically eliminates the Niche of Flame weapons. Since their stchick is line energy damage.

I think i'll stick with Flat damage boost. I think it could be a nice parallel to over charge rules for Laser weapons. Though i wouldn't have so much of an interest in it if Automatic attacks could hit the same target more than once.

The RAW for Automatic weapons seems to make me think that all trained automatic weapon users can do is spray and pray. sweeping their fire over a wide area, hoping they shoot the predator. running away from killing "Ol' Painless". A flat damage/Accuracy boost at the cost 1/4 your mag, seems like a good representation of "Focused Fire."

>>55098988
As i can tell, The only thing Autoloaders do is load something Hands free.
>>
>>55099088

Flame is blast (Aside from the singular examples at level 2 for pistol and longarms. Seriously, why did they not actually give upgrade options for people who want to keep using flame pistols? Flame pistols are badass)

Take something from Warframe. Warframe's great for space fantasy weapon designs. Not to mention that, given the way all these things start basic and get upgraded, it's useful for getting a lot of excessively decorated variants on basic weapons.

I wish these weapons were more differentiated from each other. I feel like these weapon tables both lack the simple accesibility of the DnD 5e tables and the intriguing complexity of the Shadowrun tables. What does your weapon selection say about you, other than "this is what I could afford?".

>>
>>55100980
GET CLEM
>>
>>55101005
Not much of a choice. Again, with Shadowrun you can choose between ammunition types because you know broadly what you're up against. Partly that's the setting (in a fantasy setting, anything goes), partly that's the standard campaign format (good Shadowrunners do reconnaissance before they go to the local convenience store, and there are no bad Shadowrunners because they all died).

You know whether you're going to need taser rounds (always) or AP (drones) or something more exotic for a specific target type. (I'm fond of wide spread shotguns for fighting feral ghouls. Never enter a sewer without them.) You don't know whether you're going to need an ice sword or a fire sword for your next space-dungeon crawl; it's just a thematic choice. And even if you did, you don't have the same freedom to slap a new magazine into your existing rifle.

Seriously, now that I think about it, why doesn't this game have different ammunition types for guns?
>>
>>55101115

>Seriously, now that I think about it, why doesn't this game have different ammunition types for guns?

It wouldn't even be HARD to do.

Stick and Shock: Can be put in any projectile weapon. Changes the damage type to non-lethal lightning damage and replaces any usual crit effect with the Stun critical effect.
Incendiary: Can be put in any projectile weapon. Changes the damage type to fire damage, replaces any crit effect with a burn effect (Value scaling with gun)
Overcharged Battery: Can be put in any laser weapon. Halves range but gives it the penetrating keyword.

>>
>>55101318
Why does starfinder put so much weight on criticals? They're only on natural 20s except if you have a science officer buffing your next attack, yet so many things look like they revolve around critfishing
>>
>>55101560

I have no clue. Crit effects are nice but they don't turn up enough to really matter too much. There really should be some ways to do crit effects (If not the double damage) without actually needing a crit.
>>
>>55101318
Why would overcharged battery halve range. If penetration is being increased then the weapon can't be suffering from adverse increases in blooming or it would also be losing damage with range extremely fast.

Should probably just quarter the battery's capacity instead.
>>
>>55101587
>Why would overcharged battery halve range. If penetration is being increased then the weapon can't be suffering from adverse increases in blooming or it would also be losing damage with range extremely fast.

Because I was throwing ideas at the wall for vague suggestions and decided to throw out 40k's hot shot power packs (That drop the gun range but up the AP)

That and ammo capacity isn't really much of a penalty when it's only a move action to reload a gun and standard action attacks are very accurate.
>>
>>55101603
how about overpenetration then. -1 damage per die of the weapon (so 9d8-9 for a zenith) in exchange for penetration.

I expect that it's another neat idea that was delivered conservatively, because that's what this game is.

It's got the difference between stamina points and hit points. I've seen other systems where critical hits bypass stamina-equivalents and go straight to HP. They tend to be very lethal, and especially at high levels they mean that crit fishing is the only thing you ever want to do. This game looks a bit like they considered doing that, backed out, but there are still leftover mechanics.

I understand what you mean, but for most practical levels you're not going to be playing with a lot of ability increases under your belt. And you still increase 4/6 abilities, so the point of being able to ignore Strength still applies.

That's a bit of an advanced question for the level of not-actually-playing-this-game we're getting for Starfinder. Maybe give it a few months and see if anyone cares about this game after the novelty wears off.

That said, maybe an anime-avatar-poster will theory craft a set of graphs out of their ass and everyone will be able to have fun complaining for a while.

I'm with you on the Gamestop thing as a general RPG principle, though. When a shop like that exists, it implies that the shopkeeper gets enough business that they don't care about your individual custom, which means there must be lots of adventurers who could be buying that item and doing your job, which immediately makes your character less special.
>>
>>55108484
Or just higher quality crossbows with increasing power-assist and insane draw-weights.

So reading through the setting section in the back of the CRB you'd think they could have put more shit in the rest of the book base don what they tell us. I mean, Necrografts are suppose to be cheaper alternatives to regular cybernetics. WBL shows roughly what you should be worth in total at that level.

In other words it's a (rough) balancing point that includes things like having sold off (or lost) your old gear, finding treasure troves, and so on.

A character, early into level X (not necessarily immediately but a good while before levelling again) should be worth this much. It's useful for knowing if you've been a bit too generous or not generous enough, though there's always exceptions; particularly profit-minded parties can sometimes get quite a bit ahead of the curve (best thing to do then is to let the next couple of dungeons/adventures be a little longer so their levels catch up to their values... or you can just say fuck-it and not mind it; usually about +25% over the WBL is considered fine if you've got crafting feats and whatnot in the party)

As much as I want to see Starfinder become something I can regularly find games for, I hate to say I think the game's a dud. The CRB's been out for a couple weeks and the reception it's received on Myth-Weavers and Roll20 has been very lukewarm, and the long publishing times means any new, exciting things they do release cools down before the next one.
>>
>>55109300
Agree. It's neat to look at, but I feel like the mechanics are at best competently executed.

It does make me think that we could do with an accessible RPG for generic sci-fi in the same way that DnD is babby's first fantasy RPG. The popular sci-fi RPGs I can think of (Shadowrun, Star Wars, 40k) are all quite specific with the setting that's baked into their rules, and the existing generic RPGs aren't class based.

Starfinder doesn't feel generic enough for that, though, even with its non-magic classes being pretty decently archetypal.
>>
>>55109300
No, it's not the rules. It's not the publishing times.

Don't forget a generic "alt-girl" Android, a giant lizard-man and a fucking rat!

The system has no sense of internal consistency, it's throwing an amusement park of worlds in your face and, while that's perfectly acceptable (even more so than in Fantasy) it still requires some sort of unifying theme or tone to keep everything on the same page. Starfinder doesn't have that, the Swarm does not count and The Gap is most certainly the most painfully generic thing I've ever seen.

I do.

But, okay, let's go with the rats, the lizards and the roaches sucking super hard. Tell me, what would you replace them with while retaining all the "cool" aspects of them? In other words, what "small-sized tinker race" would you replace the Ysoki with, or the "former hivemind race that gets off on personal decisions?"

The latter one feels like it could be a race of independent robots. Imagine how cool the Swarm might be if they're a rampant machine empire than Bugz.
>>
>>55110170
I'm actually inclined to agree. After maintaining relatively high spirits flipping through the themes, once I got to races everything felt really flat.

I actually kinda like the roach people, but I don't even like the androids or the lashunta. Most of them are rubber-forehead aliens or less than subtly lifted from other sci-fi/fantasy.

And you could still do that if they were the individualists recently freed from a hivemind!

They will decide on every single aspect of themselves! What they look like, how they sound, how they act, the number of LIMBS THEY HAVE, even what if any point they want to approach gender from!

It would work so much better! Shirren's fierce individuality does everything androids have but better, but would work even well ON robots!

Bollocks, they're there as an opt-in racism allegory. "Not slaves anymore but still mistreated in some places" lets you play a robot man who triumphs against adversity or one who just doesn't care and whose GM doesn't mention it. The gender stuff is, if anything, an accessory to the core option of playing Django Unplugged and shooting bigots in the dick.

I do think they're too conservative, rules wise. I wanted actual robot people. Why are they even called androids when they're basically Synths? Seriously, they eat? They eat, but don't breathe. Don't think too hard about that one.

I'm sort of OK with it. Mostly because I like Megaman Zero. I like the Mechanic class, but if I were invited to a game and we already had one my second choice would be Blitz Soldier and Zero-ing it the fuck up.

Hell, why not cut out the ability scores entirely? Does this game even use the scores for anything other than increasing stats from 18 to 19? Just use ability modifiers. You have a total of 7 points. Nothing higher than a +4 at chargen, ignore your irrelevant race and theme modifiers. Go nuts.

The answer to "why not" is, as ever, Paizo being super-conservative with their design.

But lets hedge our discussion on that theoretical scenario anyway. 6th level spells are shit and since metamagic feeds off a different resource now, I see no value in these higher level spell slots.

Everyone fights, and combat feats scale with your character level, so I'd say Soldier. Might grab a level earlier on though, since it's a nicely frontloaded class.

h my fucking god I was flipping out over this before, then I thought I had it nailed down how to assuage my autism but that assumption was made using Pathfinder's system where you got 5 boosts not 4.

There is NO WAY TO AVOID HAVING AN ODD NUMBER.

If you make your power stat 18 (For 22 at the end), the odd number goes elsewhere.

If you make it 17, then you end up with 21 as your odd number.

If you make it 16, then it boosts to 18 and then at 21 again.

If you make all your ability scores sub-17 and keep them there, that'd work but it's a big spread...

It'd only work if... you put NO BOOST AT ALL on your main stat for one level.

Start at 16, boost to 18, skip one, boost to 19 and then 20.

Goddamnit.

>>
>>55110945
Yes, but you can't have a 19 starting the game off.

Theme and race can't boost a stat over 19 to start with.

So if you want to not have that odd number, you NEED to take the 17, even though it's statistically almost identical to a 16.

So you're effectively giving up a stat point to satisfy autism you may or may not have. But an odd number doesn't help you ANYWAY. So the theme bonus may as well NOT EXIST.

IS THIS WHY THEY HAVE THE CHARACTER FLAWS RULE? SO YOU CAN JUST ARBITRARILY LOWER YOUR STATS FOR NO BENEFIT ELSEWHERE?
>>
>>55111045
What if the theme bonus gave you +2, not +1?
>>
>>55111025
You want to hang back and shoot while your droid gets into melee, and the combat bot has enough additional bonuses to make -2 AC be a trade-off rather than a crippling vulnerability.
>>
>>55111117
That'd fix everything!
>>
>>55111117
That'd resolve the issue. It's one of very few places where you even get a +1 to a stat. This game does not need ability scores when it could just have modifiers.
>>
>>55111117
That's ridiculous! The mechanic that is meant to represent your character acquiring an innate talent towards something should not give you a modifier towards that thing!
>>
>>55097002

I could imagine them as being Vampires. The upper levels of the !necromongers are actual OG vampires while everyone else is an aspirant of some sort or something in between that makes them stronger and durable than normal hence why they can wade into a fight with high tech soldiers with seemingly archaic suits of armor and weapons (even though they could and would use modern weapons and armor).
>>
>>55110526
>I think that's why it isn't even in Beta yet.

Yeah, I'm not part of DSP but I'm doing some development myself class-wise. There is no way it's even stepping into beta until the bestiary is out, as right now the exact values for a lot of things with actual opponents (Kinda needed for combat) are far from able ot be mathed out.
>>
>>55111288
Eoxian soldiers and starship are already equipped with hyper-advanced materials that look like bone and sinew, a mobile vampire cult who's had their aristocratic ears to the engineers of every major weapons manufacturer should have some equally frightening stuff.
>>
>>55111389

Well that's the thing. I don't want them to be connected to Eox, I know they don't own or use the Corpse Fleet (maybe) but they shouldn't have the sole rights to everything undead in setting.
>>
>>55110794

>There is NO WAY TO AVOID HAVING AN ODD NUMBER.

I'd have really preferred if themed didn't give +1 stat. My leaning would have been to have combined it a bit with pathfinder's traits and go 'You get X as a class skill (As they already do) and may use your primary stat for that skill rather than it's normal stat assignment). So a Soldier Icon is good at culture even without a heap of int for example.
>>
>>55111407
I'm totes going to play an eoxian but I'm going to refluff him as my own type of undead.
>>

>>

>>55111451
I'm bitching about the theme bonus leaving you with a useless +1, not the pointbuy amount itself.
>>
>>55111518
The guy you're replying to is a retard but you can use your leftover point to bump something to 11, raise it to 13 at level 5, then take a feat with a score prerequisite.

That's probably the intended use for it. I'm definitely going to be running at 11pb or 13pb myself though.
>>
>>55111451
The issue here isn't "10 PB is bad", it's that uneven scores are funky as shit and the forced odd score before 18 fucks with math when a 17 and a 16 function completely identically, and you are FORCED to have an odd score in the sub-18 range due to the fact that themes tack that +1 on.

You could make an android operative with pilot theme, for example, and give him 18 Dex, so 5 of your point buy. You could throw the last 5 points into either Int or Con, but you could ALSO throw that 1 point into Cha or Str, and the rest of the 4 PB into Int/Con and... Have the same net result on your overall ability score modifiers at the end of the day.
>>
>>55111407
No no, sorry if I made it sound like they'd be a subset of Eox, I just meant that "seemingly archaic" armor and weaponry could actually be more advanced than the stuff their foes are wielding.

And what if their troopers are given gene therapy or augmented with chemicals and/or nanomachines? Drugs laced with OG vampire blood could be very potent (and highly addictive, if you want to get Jem'Hadar up in this.)

Now imagine the blood drunk nobility having to ensure their vampire masters are properly fed so they can continue to receive these blood potions. I'm imagining a fuedal style society where every noble is tasked with bringing blood and other resources to their masters.

Hey, I've got a rules clarification question. When the class abilities "Stellar Rush" and "Charge Attacl
both say
>make a charge without the penalties
does that simply mean without the -X to hit, or does it also refer to lifting the requirement to move at-least 10 ft? TLDR: would those abilities, as written, technically let you charge someone you're already adjacent to? This wouldn't usually be advantageous, but there are at-least a few situations where this would be useful.
>>
>>55111799
I haven't been to the Pathfinder side of things since the split, but except for thread wars bullshit, /sfg/ including this particular thread are almost entirely mechanical discussion.

>>
>>55111799
Because the threads don't have the same audience you donk.

Some people don't give a shit about starfinder. Some people here don't play pathfinder but are still curious about Star.

And the two game systems share a lot of terminology despite being very different, so mooshing both into one thread just complicated things.
>>
>>55109300
I wouldn't really call Starfinder a dud. Rather, it's getting the average, maybe an above average launch for a roleplaying game system.

DnD editions and Pathfinder are outliers. Even for relatively big names like Games Workshop or White Wolf Publishing, launches are usually pretty quiet in a hobby like tabletop.
>>
>>55111785
It's actually very simple when you think about it; the King is a Pre-Gap Vampire who creates Dukes who create Counts, and throughout all these stages you get "Knights" who are the blood-drunk landed types who supply their Lords with blood, and in exchange are given the nano-potions, lands to rule and subjects to harvest.
>>
>>55112117
Some ideas based on this.

The king was relatively low on the totem pole as far as vampires go back in Pre-Gap Golarion. As space travel begins to pick up he decides to try his luck else where away from the elder vampires who are loath to give up their stations.

The Gap happens. In the 300 years leading up to the present the Vampire is building up his resources siring other loyal vampires and taking advantage of the business owners who are looking for immortality.

Now he has what amounts to a solar system under his control with various Dukes/Counts/Knights rulling these few planets in his stead from his asteroid turned castle.
>>
>>55112214
Bonus idea; the asteroid is in fact a slice of Golarion sheared off the surface with the vampire's ancestral castle and immediate lands on it. It is therefore not only a formidable holding, but a place of great and terrible power filled with secrets and lost history begging to be rediscovered.
>>
>>55112273

Perfect. There are or would be artifacts that he doesn't remember being there but uses it as collateral when dealing with various factions looking for pre-Gap relics. Hell, he might even hire adventurers to try and explore parts of it when the whim hits him.

Also, to keep things interesting, while he doesn't remember anything pre-gap he still hates stagnation (in spite of the fact he's now in the position he wanted back then) so probably engineers shack-ups within his own ranks to keep things fresh and give Knights a chance to advance up the ranks until he does it again.

What would life be like under these feudal space vampires? Do they prefer humans or is xeno blood just as delicious? Do they even allow Xenos to become vampires or join their ranks?

If the Knights/Counts/Dukes are allowed to own businesses maybe their employees are made to live in enclaves they own for example.

>>
>>55115474

Could give them Unwieldy. That solves the 'Making bigger pistols makes operatives too powerful' issue as they can't use Unwieldy weapons to Trick Attack/Multiattack.

So a Hand Cannon is a pistol that deals a load more damage but can't be fired as fast.
>>
>>55115535

Doesn't that just make the Operative class useless then if they want to use a Hand Cannon?
>>
>>55115546

They've got a shit tonne of other pistol options (And they'll still hit harder than basically anyone else with a pistol due to Trick Attack). The Operative is a class with a lot of inbuilt restrictions in exchange for a huge amount of non-weapon damage. Weapon choice is not an advantage of theirs.

Right now Pistols have the issue that they need to suck because if they make a pistol worth using for non-operatives, Operatives skyrocket in power (When they are already pretty comparable to Soldiers while also being skillmonkeys). So making better pistols inherently ends up with the question 'So how do we keep Operatives from using them'
>>
>>55115605

So would you suggest giving them like say, long arm damage, but just be one handed but take time to reload?

And not be an operative weapon or something? I get what you're saying but I don't want to punish the player who wants to go with a revolver option.
>>
>>55115605
Not to spout muh realism in a thread about playing pretend, but pistols just aren't as strong as long guns. They can't be. They use smaller projectiles at lower velocity with less energy. This is for both mechanical reasons and for the comfort of the shooter. Now, I understand in a scifi setting that anything can be anything, but if you have a pistol that can do X damage, a rifle using the same technology will always do 2X damage because you can simply fit more of said techno-weaponry onto a bigger platform. Of course pistols are inferior in terms of numbers, you'd be violating physics if they weren't.

I'M GOING BLADES AND BULLETS ON EVERY CHARACTER, AND NONE OF YOU CAN STOP ME.

Though a slightly above CR enemy might.
>>
>>55115688

I mean sure I could just fluff them as being the same, but I imagine that they'd be a TAD stronger?

Trying to think of a good middle ground. Maybe shorter range and storage size?
>>
>>55115631

I'd say longarm damage (The extra range will still give people a reason to go longarms but not make it the first feat everyone without longarm spec wants) and either make them Unweildy or give them a useful keyword that also includes 'Not an operative weapon'.

Like say:

>Hand Cannon: This weapon benefits from weapon specialisation as if it was a longarm but cannot be used with abilities that only work with small arms.

>>55115654

Yes but the difference is so very large that right now 'Get longarms' is the first feat that Envoys, Technomancers, Mystics and Engineers should get no questions asked. It's not that longarms shouldn't have an edge it's that pistols are pissing in the wind compared to rifles as you level up. Remember, they not only get smaller range and less damage dice they also only get 1/2 weapon spec to damage so a rifle has +10 damage over a pistol before a single die is rolled at high levels.

Mateba is weird dude.
>>
>>55115767
Man, I didn't do the math until now but while the difference between one-handed melee and two-handing comes out to less than 5 damage at any given range, we're looking at about 30 damage loss per hit on the best small arm vs long arm.
>>
>>55115746
A magnum handgun when compared to a standard handgun will have a lower capacity, heavier recoil, a heavier weight, and will take longer for follow up shots. In the case of revolvers they are often more accurate due to a fixed sight, a fixed barrel, and a much better trigger pull.
>>
>>55115767
The point I'm trying to make is that in a realistic scenario, you never want a pistol over a rifle when you know you're going to be fighting. The NLY advantages a pistol confer over a long arm is that they can be used one handed if need be and they are easier to carry. I'd say pistols should be relegated to skill monies for mechanical reasons, not because they can make the pistol magically do more damage. Let them do other things in the turn besides just attacking. It may not seem important or logical at first, but being able to push buttons or unplug wires while still being able to shoot will make up for reduced damage in terms of game balance.

>mercenaries are CR 1/2 and totally unarmored, have HP 13

>tactical semi-auto pistol sucks, targets KAC, deals only 1d6 damage, pathetic increment 30 feet

>fighting totally unarmored CR 1/2 mercenary
>shoot mercenary with tactical semi-auto pistol

>CRIT!
>MAX DAMAGE CRIT!
>12 damage!

>CR 1/2 mercenary still standing with 1 HP

Why do semi-auto tactical pistols suck so much? Are they 9mm?

How do you prevent a captured caster from casting spells?
>>
>>55115860

Well gotta remember I'm trying to fluff this as Destiny weapons.

Handguns are a primary weapon that are more single, shorter range but powerful shots that if you're accurate with do some real hurting. But low rate of fire and weapon storage size of course.

Side Arms are faster, lighter, and held more of a magazine size, but do less damage.
>>
>>55115892
The question to ask is why though? Is it just because operative buffs pistols and manages to get them on par with rifles? Cool, who gives a shit. Do literally anything else and just take a rifle. Is there a mechanical and/or plot based reason they would want to take an objectively inferior weapon due to its two points of superiority?
>>
>>55115900

Maybe .22 LR is a popular pistol round in the future?

I would say they're shitty glocks but they don't double as grenades so that's clearly not it.
>>
>>55115909

Gags, sensory deprivation and headphones with random noises to distract them and keep them from concetrating along with minor electrical shocks (not enough to cause injury so much as random muscle spasms and surprise).

Long term containment will probably mean other means such as a focused anti-magic beam/zone or some kind of drug/poison that prevents use of spellcasting that has to be administered regularly

Except you take no less time to shoot a pistol as anything else. You can't actually do anything else while firing a pistol. That and it's not generally good design to go 'Literally everyone wants to take this one feat as it makes you better at everything'.

Pistols are not even appreciably cheaper. If you are buying a rifle, you can't afford to also have a pistol.
>>
>>55115910

You could make Hand Cannon an actual weapon category and say 'Anyone proficient in side arms is proficient in Hand Cannons'. Along with say, SMGs being a new category that anyone proficient in longarms is also proficient in.

SMGs typically use pistol rounds

>>55116072
You keep doing this and it doesn't work, I'd bump the other one just to spite you.
>>
>>55116083

its a cool OP image to be sure. But its page 4. Gotta have standards.
>>
>>55116035

Sure, I could just do that, but I figured I gotta come up with some sort of "inbetween" of a pistol and a long arm.

I'm still not sure if they should be operative weapons or not, I can see that being OP, but I admit I dont know much about the supposed inherent OPness of Operative Pistols already existing, that I see people complain about.
>>
>>55116083

>SMGs typically use pistol rounds

Yes but the handling bears a lot more resemblance to rifles than pistols. SMGs would likely work very well as lower damage than rifles but better autofire (Using only 1/4 of the magazine rather than all, for example) to give them a mechanical role.
>>
>>55116124

You don't need to create a whole no weapons classification for that. That would be needlessly complicated.

You can adjust the size and rate of fire on pistols to achieve the same effect or just say that certain pistols can chamber rifle rounds.

You do though, or otherwise they become the best operative weapon and start outdoing soldiers (When soldiers don't also have skill monkeying). Either a new weapon category or a keyword or such.

I'm working over a home-brew race and I want a little help striking a good balance. Overtuned is probably better than undertuned, so assume somebody's gonna try and turn my admittedly ugly baby into a munchkin'd monster and we'll work back from there.

There's really no beating around the bush, they're conceptually catfolk, maybe with some actual goddamn purpose. I'm playing around with a psuedo-rage mechanic (somewhat to make up for the apparent lack in the core rules, somewhat for the hell of it).

To line up with other non-human races, they need 2 more traits (possibly only 1 if Scent is split off).

It's like my space games are realistic!

That's probably why pistols are for the non-combat-focused classes.
