Default setting of WFRP 4th edition is The Enemy Within era of the Empire. By dialing the timeline back, they'll let everyone enjoy the classic 'Old World Feel' and decide for themselves how far they wish to go into the Storm of Chaos/End Times material.

It's going pretty good. Combat is fast and terrifying, we're all used to d&d combat. Already the Whaler got stabbed through the forearm and the Initiate of Sigmar got shot in the wrist, so he had to beat mutants to death with his off-hand. They both killed two mutants each though.

Another thing I like is the complete randomness of every aspect of the character, and that in combination with the already-existing setting makes roleplaying WAY easier than it ever could be in D&D.

Warhammer Fantasy Dwarfs had wizards way back in the day right? Like back before the lore about them disrupting magic and turning to stone if they use it anyway?

Suppose there was some Dwarf wizards in the world, ones who don't disrupt magic or turn to stone by using it. How would the rest of the Dwarf race react to them? Like humans do where leaders think they are useful but the common citizens and church want them all dead? Would Dwarfs have their own system of magic, would they be learning magic secondhand from humans, or would they learn directly from elves? Could a Dwarf wizard in theory use as much magic as they want while their racial magic disruption makes it so other wizards have a harder time since Dwarfs don't shut down Runes by proximity?

Nearly every fantasy character in the BL books had their own arcs that generally focused on the characters and their interactions with the warhammer fantasy world instead of being a retarded powerwank. Gotrek and felix went to shit when they started creeping up on power levels. Characters like brunner the bounty hunter, teclis and tyrion had their own semi isolated stories that filled the gaps between their adventuring or gave a more personal touch to actual big happenings in the lore like the battle of the finuvial plains.

WHFB fantasy novels and stories expanded upon the actions of lore important characters instead of taking a giant shit over them and retconning half the lore.
The stories started to get shittier as fantasy neared it's end because of the entire time of legends thing which should be left as legends instead of being expounded upon.

Disregarding the end times, not a single warhammer fantasy book takes a giant shit on the setting in a way that the HH books do, or the Beast Arises series do.

This is where total war does better. Instead of schlicking it to established characters and critters it focuses on the world of the setting, which gave it such charm. The short stories that CA wrote for the game fit naturally into the setting without seeming like someone else's OC donut steel, probably because they have an actual Old GW employee on the payroll.

Well, they did exist back in 1st edition WHRP. As far as I understand it, they were a pretty rare breed who had to learn magic from humans (on an individual level, they didn't get colleges and thought of magic as like a craft with a craftsman and apprentice), and mostly focused on magic for the purposes of fighting.

Generally there are some interesting tidbits from older lore that I think are worth keeping, like Gazul.

In table top? I'd love to see them have the same rule as skaven slaves with cornered rat. When they route, everything withing 6" d6 s2 hits, showing them fighting to the bitter end. I think if your talking about a militia throw together as "your all that's left, we need you", it would be pretty flavorful and honestly having a tarpit that blows up on death can have some pretty positive results.
