New player here, I am trying to make a list and could use some advice. I know the rules, this is more a question of what would be competitive.


The units I have are pedro kantor, a squad of assault centurions with hurricane bolters, an apothecary, and two primaries lts. I will have to use the 3 elite slot detachment.


My question is what should I fill this list out with? I want to maximize the aura effects on some shooty infantry and use the centurions to ward off would be chargers. The IF chapter tactics means enemies in cover won't be able to just sit back with it, and will have to move to me

Reposting because I have no idea how to make best use of what I have.

Trying to construct a 2000 point list for my space wolves list and I don't know which units are going to serve me better in 8th edition and what HQs are worth it.

Got two squads of 10 grey hunters with only one rhino between them, a squad of long fangs, terminators magnetized for almost any loadout with a LRC, 2 regular boxnaughts, a leviathan, a deredeo along with a footslogging Logan Grimnar, a rune priest, an iron priest, a battle leader, along with wolf priest that could easily be substituted for Ulrik

I've heard that dreadnoughts are much better this edition and I'm probably going to go ahead and field all I've got of them in my list, which brings up the question of what other units would be best suited for playing battle hospice for all those grumpy old men

Y'know, the amount of 40k players who drive their opinions and shiposting on assorted uninformed memes is disheartening. Out of curiosity and probably masochism I've been trying to find out why some common opinions are what they are, such as the widespread hate for T'au and Space Wolves, and for every logical response or simple "not to my liking" there's half a dozen moronic cookie-cutter meme responses, blatant misinformation or just straight up bullshit.

It's weird. Maybe it's because of the expense of getting into an army, and how the setting is (or was, anyway) built on misinformation and propaganda, but people are very quick to spread bullshit about whichever faction they dislike, often to puff up their own, sometimes out of seemingly nothing but pure, simple spite. I personally really like the look of the classic Gatling/Trip Turbo/Apoc launcher Reaver, although I'm a little irritated about the massive eagle splashed all over the carapace not being a fancy Cog Mechanicum, since that would let Loyalists and Traitors use it without looking odd and not all Chaos/DarkMech likes the "all spikes all the time" version.

New to 40k and I've started collecting CSM, starting with the "Start Collecting" CSM box.

What guns should I equip my hellbrute with? I was thinking maybe Lascannon and Missile Launcher since I want to run an on foot focussed 1000 points army and it would add some anti tank ability. I know multi melta and power fist/scourge is decent but I wanted something other than the DV HB loadout since I'll probably get him too.

And I'm stuck between Black Legion and Alpha Legion, is either stratagem particularly stronger? I absolutely love the fluff for Alpha but I like the idea of running my 1k sons rubrics in the army possibly alongside some khorne stuff in bigger battles. I'm sure it's possible with Alpha but I like all my stuff to be relatively fluffy.

Are we really getting an abitrary paint app before a list builder??

Gypsy did have guns, though, even if they apparently rolled the recharge time randomly every mission. Warlord isn't really kitted for that.

You could do the chest-cannon one pretty well with shouldee laser blasters and power fists, though. Shame Titan Melee is so garbage and flamers are so lame now, because I liked the look of a Saturnyne Lascutter Warlord blasting a whole field of Mechanicum robots and/or Tyranids and such with an Instant Death lascannon hit each.
Flamer Warhound is apparently pretty good, though, however that's meant to work.

Chosen and havocs, weirdly enough, are fantastic. Chosen because you can dump a frightening shooty squad 9" from something and charge what little remains, Havocs abuse the -1 to shooting by staying nice and far back with big guns. Double-gun Hellforged Contemptor is also a good choice.

Alpha legion is much stronger, the -1 to hit past 12" is amazing on CSM, it allows you to take a slightly melee focused army and force them to walk towards you.

Missile launcher and las is good, he benefits from legion tactics so you can use him as a stealthy predator.he also has a stratagem that allows him to fire twice and a special rule to do so too.

Kharn has an edge over Lucius in melee thanks to his better invul save, but other than that they're pretty much dead even. Friend and I tested, 10 rounds of combat, 5 wins to Kharn, 4 wins to Lucius, 1 draw where Kharn killed Lucius but died to the mortal wounds caused by Armor of Shrieking Souls.
As I said, get fucking perfect scrub.

Went up against Guilliman for the first time today. He was buffing three twin assault cannon razorbacks as they rolled up the field.
My devastators died turn one leaving me with 0 anti-tank so pretty much all of the enemy got across the field unmolested. Everyone else died to being shot a whole lot.
I ought to cut back on the apothecaries and double down on devastators. Are tactical marines that useful compared to more heavy weapons?
No matter what I do I also mess up deploying my sniper scouts and they die turn one. Should I bother putting them outside my deployment zone?

Combi-flamer and plasma would be best.
Just remember to shoot the plasma first so if you need to overcharge it you can reroll if you need to.
You can totally go with melta if you want, but the melta's lack of range makes it subpar, though it is an assault weapon and does deal more damage on average.
Plasma can be any colour you want.

Bolt pistols will just increase the distance you need to charge, a chainsword gives you 2 extra attacks free of charge every combat. It isn't even useful for "muh shooting pistols in melee" because they have the same statline but the swords give you both hits in the first round and still give 2 in the next round.

I was the same way with painting when I started! Then got to my local warhammer store(tm) and the grey tide was in full effect. Everyone was assuming I'd been playing forever to have a fully painted force and thought I was trolling when asking about rules. Was an interesting experience.

So, I got a FW Sicaran Tank for my Chaos army, and I'm not sure what to do for the sponsons.

The Lascannons are nice, but the main gun is assault, so I'd probably have the tank moving, hurting lascannon accuracy.

The bolters might be good for mulching infantry on overwatch.

Pistols aren't too bad a choice but if you're playing world eaters, renegades or maybe black legion then swords are just superior.

World eaters get 2 extra strength 6 attacks from the sword compared to the strength 4 pistol.
Renegades give up their shooting to advance and charge.
And black legion have ways to boost DTTFE, which gives them extra melee attacks on certain rolls vs imperium.

Okay I'm almost certain you don't get to add the strength buff from the axe to the sword, different weapon profiles. I can see why you'd pick a strength 5 melee attack over a strength 4 shooting attack on a shooting squad though.
What's this about Black Legion boosting DTTFE? That's an Icon of Excess thing that Abaddon has, though there's nothing stopping a Black Legion Sorcerer from casting Prescience on your zerkers.

Chaos marines only really care about the long war, they don't give a shit about xenos race and the black legion doubly so. Tyranids mean nothing to them because they avoid their daemon infested worlds like the plague, orks are an annoyance, there's grounds for slaanesh marines to care about eldar and I don't think any of the older black crusaders even know that tau exist.

I want to make a new chapter that was in the latest founding, but got shafted, and was somehow made without any Primaris marines. In fact, they were given shitty, older tech, and are currently being babysat by an Ultramarine, since their regiment is very under-strength due to a severe fuck up in their creation of their chapter/claiming of their homeworld.

How plausible is this? I'm new to 8th edition, so I don't know all the new lore.

I get it from a fluff reason, and even mechanically it's not terrible. But I just hate that my Icon of Excess became so much less useful. Keep the Black Legion Warlord Trait the way it is and make Icon of Excess extend DTTFE to all enemies to represent excessive violence, like a weaker version of the Emperor's Children stratagem that's always on a squad for 10 points.
