the guardsmen are fine, it's your bases that need the most work. You should use finer sand mixed with heavier gravel, and actually paint it not just glue it to a red base with some grass.

I light wash with agrax might add some depth to the red uniform, too, and a very light drybrushing with mephiston red. Armor and weapon should be washed lightly with nuln oil.

Intact buildings are a pain for units to interact with. You either need to fuck around with removal roofs and levels or they're just impenetrable boxes.

Same reason people don't build ruins with realistic amounts of rubble - it makes actually placing models a pain.

My officers. I like infantry more than vehicles, and the officers have the most flavor. My converted snipers are also up there.

When I finish this one I'll buy some Primaris and mix them is as deathwatch or something. A few hyper-elite marines would contrast nicely with ranks and ranks of guardsmen. Probably Warbringers or Raptors chapter since I would camo the marine armor to fit in with the guardsmen infantry.

Numbers, obviously. Looks more impressive on the table.

I took infantry before it was cool. I still use chimeras even though the taurox is better at almost everything now. I guess there is a line somewhere - I wouldn't use a cool unit that would handicap me too hard in the game, but I often use cool units that aren't optimal and absolutely never take optimal units that I think look dumb.

Elite boys. The bodies I prefer to run usually don't need much on them in the way of toyz to be ded killy. It's expensive points-wise, but I like having a small army full of specialists.

You don't need full buildings, you just need to plan things out a bit more. A city square with a large fountain in the middle, some waterways running through with bridges over them to force chokepoints, open enclosures for cover like a walled-off garden, and some smaller open-topped buildings for verticality and it could work. You could even have some broken shit, just not a bombed-out husk that's covered in eight inches of solid grey grime.

This is the main reason I own both armies, I love both playstyles, and play my nids as boyz and GK as toyz. Also, playing both styles of army actually helps in certain situations, since you can use certain strategies/tactics you learn from one army and apply them to the other.

Absolutely, I took Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders in 7th for my GK and a CC walkrant for my nids. On the other side, I also don't like using units if I dislike their lore or aesthetic, no matter how "good" they are, for example, I don't own a single Flyrant or dreadknight babycarrier.

I played my other army more for a while, but lately my local GW is getting more into 40k, so for a while it will probably be mostly my Necrons.
I prefer more Elite armies, but that's partially because painting large amounts of models take longer, and it's more of a pain to carry them around and set them up.
Depends, if the unit I like is absolute trash then I might not use it on the table, but I don't mind using slightly weaker units if I like them.
