For mono anything to be viable, you'd need for running multiple colors to become a lot worse. New blue tech would just get slotted into some Sultai/4 color deck. There is literally no reason outside the odd Blood Moon matchup to go mono-colored.

I saw this crazy Nic Fit build running Zur's Weirding and Bloodchief Ascension and decided to try making a deck with the same engine in Modern. Pic is where I'm at so far. It runs pretty smooth but I've only really played it against other midrange decks on Xmage, which is where it should excel.

Since I have a Ux deck, when should I start throwing counterspells against Storm? I usually try to cockblock the combo in the beginning, and that has worked for me so far, but I've only played against Storm once and went L-W-W. Also I have Cursecatcher-like creatures.

And another question, has anyone playing non-Blue decks considered putting Mindbreak Trap in their sideboard against Storm? I know that Storm has Remand, but how much mana does Storm normally float by the time they finish the combo?

Fuck, I love playing tribal decks. Why must you make me pick which of my children I love the most?

If I really had to pick, instead of listing my favorite two (which have already probably been listed) I'm gonna go with the tribe I fell in love with first: skeletons.

I've always loved necromancer classes in videogames. However my affinity has always been towards skeletons. Skeletons in MTG are badass, so I decided to try and make them into something.

Unfortunately, Wizards is so focused on pushing zombies, that they never print skeletons. It especially pisses me off when they make a creature that is literally a skeleton in the art with no flesh what-so-ever, and they call it a fucking zombie anyway.

Mindbreak Trap is a good option. Legacy Burn lists run it SB sometimes, to good effect.

It's not a very anticipated card, and it could be a free counterspell in a few other matchups.

Nah, game is overpriced. I say this as someone that does actually own a few Modern decks along with other shit. The main problem is speculators. Wizards should be more liberal with reprints, or less Jewish with Masters sets. Or both.

So I'm on GB tron & I came up against Jeskai control just the other day - game one went fine, I won, then I proceeded to get stomped into the dirt post sideboard by Crumble to Dust - even if I had tron active before he could play it, he had the countermagic to deal with Karn or anything else that could take him off the mana needed to play Crumble. After he played it, on both occasions it was followed up by a second Crumble, leaving me with 11 lands in the deck and not enough time to grab enough to play anything significant without it getting countered.

So what do I do to prevent this, follow tronbros? Do I just go up to 4 Thoughtseize in the side and pray I can rip one out of their hand on turn 1-2? Do I chuck Surgicals in as well? Is there some spicy tech I can be playing to prevent this? I'd laugh at any other deck trying to run Crumble to fight tron, but UWx control seems to be the one shell it can actually work in thanks to the disruption.

Wail is great to mainboard just to hit t3 Ugin. It can hit thopters/inkmoth in response to plating or block a ravager. It stops a second or third thoughtsieze and slow down shadow. Worst case it counters a rift bolt or lava spike. It is rarely a dead card in hand.

Gifts or the flashback-ed past in flames is usually your best bet. I also recommend trying to kill dorks on your turn or their upkeep as most of their rites are instants, and they only need to make a lot of mana once. As was already stated hate pieces are obviously powerful tools, assuming you are in white with something like judges familiar RIP is one of the most powerful card against the deck, with relics is a good substitute, but they can still empty the warrens for a decent amount under it so try to have some sweepers. Otherwise surgical and chalice can just win on the spot if they aren't ready for the cards.

Thats how its done at my college tabletop club. just a bunch of bois with a bunch of decks playing mtg with no cares given for banlists or formats. I'm currently fiddling with Thalia's lieutenant as my core and pump up my Champion of the Parish and go through with Champion of Lambholt. It works pretty well and synergizes with everything in the deck but I'm testing it out against a Winding Constrictor variant with Verdurous Gearhulk and it seems to come up short. It might just be my playtesting that gives me skewed results though, I kind of feel a CoCo drop or a good Dromoka's command are too good to pass up.

I play UW Spirits. My deck is a tempo-control deck that is capable of beating down. The idea with UW Spirits is that your deck is designed to either disrupt combos with counterspells or fizzle removal with counterspells and Spirits. The two neat things about UW Spirits is that 1) almost all of your cards are either instant-speed or grant flash, so you can hold up disruption without worrying about missing creature drops and 2) all of your creatures are able to answer some sort of removal.
You can go to Bant Spirits to get ramp from Hierarch and CoCo into good stuff, or Esper to gain access to discard and Fatal Push.

I mean it could be. One of the game stores in my state runs beginner only events that are modern, because you can build any old janky $20 deck and get a game in. It depends on your meta and especially your willingness to learn. If you want to just take it casually, commander is your best bet, if you're ready to lose basically all games but learn about the depth of Magic along the way, Modern is good. There's plenty sub-$100 decks that are OK enough to get you thru games without just dying.

Friday Night Magic draft events. Good way to get cards, good way to learn to evaluate cards. From there you can probably make Standard-legal decks for a bit while you figure out what kind of deck is both good and you find enjoyable to pilot.

Then do Modern. Trying to play competitive Standard is a shitshow of inflates card prices and two-four decks making up 60-80% of the metagame.

That's how me and my family used to play when I was younger.

We'd play 4 player 60-100 life games, and just sit there hoarding real big armies until one of us cracked and attacked.

It was a lot less for everyone once I learned how real matches went and rushed them down within the first few turns.

Viashino, because their Dominarian variety has some great fluff, some very flavorful cards, a super cool aesthetic and an actually really interesting meta origin (they were in the books before they were in the games). They embody my favorite aspects of Red.

How do you guys feel about Collective Effort in WU Monument? I played a ton of Monument Friday and the main thing I noticed against a lot of decks is that I lack removal and I can't push through a ton of damage without the Monument out so maybe an anthem that's also removal will help.

It's a one-of right now but it might become a two-of. I'll probably drop a Reflector Mage, who isn't that relevant in a lot of matchups. Anybody got any ideas on what to replace it with?

The deck I was talking about doesn't fold to sweepers thanks to the resilience of the creatures and has the ability to gain card advantage, which are normally strengths absent of typical aggro decks. Try it budget then upgrade if you like it.

Limited is good experience, but if you're looking to get into competitive I suggest finding someone to practice with. You can use programs like xmage or Cockatrice to play for free online with all the cards. I think you can even do drafts on xmage. xmage is better if your less familiar with the rules since it has more automation, similar to MTGO.

I'd also recommend watching Magic streams on Twitch or maybe YouTube videos to try and learn some stuff you might not know.

If you're just wanting to play casually this is not a good thread to ask, since this thread is for competitive play.
