Sell me on Mekton (or talk me out of it). I want to plan a mecha themed game for my group. We're all generally versed with anime mecha and like it to varying degrees. It's also a theme we've never really explored in our previous games.
I'm looking at Mekton as it seems to have a little bit of every thing I'd like to see in a mecha campaign. I'm concerned it might be too much for my group to learn, they're cranky and like things the way they're used to, and learning a new system is always a bit of a chore.
What i'm looking for the system to do is allow for some mecha creation/customization. Fairly simple rules, I'm not looking for mecha simulation but i'm also looking for more then narrative RPG where you add your own theme to it's base mechanics. Heroic player driven mecha combat is what i'm after.
As for style think Gundam when it's more "serous". When it treats mobile suits like mobile weapons platforms. So Kung-fu Shining Finger stuff is out. A little anime cheese is fine by me but I don't want it to feel like a Sentai Robo game.
I also dig a little cyberpunk flavoring. I'd like at least one setting to feel kind of Cyberpunk ish. Like something you'd see out of AD Police or Akira.
That said do you think Mekton the right system? There any specific setting of the various homebrews/"official" settings that I should look into? Is there another system I should look at for this kind of game?
Thanks.
TLDR; I wanna run a Gundam inspired mecha game. Is Mekton any good? is this the system I should use? Or is there another system I should look into?

Mekton works exceptionally well for gundam style games, it's where it shines best. But the system is heavy, especially since you want to use Zeta plus for building mechs. Actual play is simple, but it can be cheesed a little easily and a mech can rapidly become insane, it's really not the best system in the world, it's kinda bad honestly. So your mileage may vary whether or not you have fun with.

know any other systems that might do better? Like a general RPG system like Gurps or whatever?

I hear Battle Century G thrown around as a recommendation a lot. I doubt GURPS would be much better if you're worried about a very crunchy, rules heavy system. Because that's what mekton does best, nothing really compares to the level of building you can get out of it. Otherwise, you're pretty fucked in terms of mecha games to my knowledge.

GURPS actually has very simple mecha rules. But it's GURPS, so the GM has to do everything that a GURPS GM does in order to end up with a playable game.

You could always use Jovian Chronicles for large style mecha or Heavy Gear 3e for smaller style. Those games work well, and the system is pretty easy.
How about Mechaton
Or Mobile Frame Zero?
