Reposting feom a few threads back. People were too busy "discussing" thr number of marine codexes to answer.

How is this list for a complete beginner? 500 pt

++ Vanguard Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [26 PL, 499pts] ++

+ HQ +

Captain [6 PL, 101pts]: Jump Pack, Master-crafted boltgun, Power axe, The Crusader's Helm

+ Troops +

Crusader Squad [5 PL, 118pts]
. 2x Initiate
. Initiate w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon
. Initiate w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun
. Sword Brother: Combi-plasma

+ Elites +

Dreadnought [7 PL, 148pts]: Assault cannon
. Dreadnought combat weapon w/Heavy Flamer: Heavy flamer

Vanguard Veteran Squad [8 PL, 132pts]: Jump Pack
. Space Marine Veteran: 2x Lightning Claw
. Space Marine Veteran: Power sword, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: Power sword, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: 2x Chainsword
. Veteran Sergeant: 2x Lightning Claw

++ Total: [26 PL, 499pts] ++

The captain and vets stay near the others (captain provides wide buffs with the BT helm) until something is close to strike.

The dread takes care of weak big group units and punches tough guys.

The crusaders plink and take care of objectives.

+++Armageddon 27th Iron Horses+++
Pictured is my list. After last week’s game, which illustrated to me how stupidly powerful IG can be this edition, I decided to retire that list and try something more like the exact opposite of the usual conscipts/scion combo with russ support.

I went with:

>6x infantry teams
>3x Salamander scout vehicles
>1x Ogryn unit of 4
>9x mortar teams, 1x lascannon team
>Yarrick, priest, Straken, Nork, commissar, 2x captains
>1 of each assassin and an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor
>A chimera for just about everything

My goal here was a melee-centric list that uses Yarrick’s reroll 1s ability, Straken’s +1 attack, the priest’s +1 attack, and the Fix Bayonets! order to get 5 attacks in melee per turn per guardsmen. Instead of sitting back and shooting, I would run right into the enemy’s face and pummel him with a hurricane of tiny fists.

+++Tyranid Hive Fleet+++

Here is the Tyranid list. I don’t know much about their codex, but I know he took:

>a big unit of Carnifex including Old One Eye
>another sizable units of Zoanthropes
>some biovores
>a big clump of genestealers and cultists
>2 swarms of shooty gaunts
>shooty warriors
>some huge warlord that conferred FNP and respawned gaunts

Those Carnifex in particular would turn out to be a huge problem.

+++Mission+++

The rolled mission was relic, the rolled deployment was Dawn of War (I think – the 12” from table edge one). Tyranids finished deployment first and got +1, which gave them the first turn.

I threw quite a bit of terrain on the table for this one since /tg/ feedback last game was not enough terrain. My army was definitely shootier than his, so if anything I thought it would give the bugs a marginal advantage. I did not randomly scatter the terrain and kept it balanced instead.

+++Deployment+++

As before, I put the Salamanders on the flanks with the intent to get deployment zone points and maybe harass biovores. The nucleus of my army was the bunch of characters and the 60 infantry + Ogryns, which I intended to just throw right at him and see what happened. They all went packed into the center ready to swarm the relic. Mortars and lascannons went in the backfield with the vindicare, the Culexus tailed a vehicle in the center and the Callidus and Eversor went into reserve.

I forgot to roll to seize initiative. Because I am retarded.

+++Turn 1+++

The bugs advanced in the center with almost everything, getting to within 3” of the relic. Biovores, warriors, and Zoanthropes all nuked the lascannon team right off the bat and killed all of them. A few shots were fired at the mortars, too, but only resulted in a spore mine drifting menacingly close to them.

On my turn, the Salamanders zoomed up the flanks while every single chimera emptied its passengers. 60 guardsmen and 4 Ogryns, stirred to righteous frenzy by the Ministorum priest, Yarrick’s speech over the internal vox, and Straken’s gung ho battlecry all moved right up to the insectoid menace. My lines ended up about 6-8 inches away, so I decided to direct all my shooting at the carnifexes, his warlord, and the zoanthropes lest he pick off lots of gaunt casualties to prevent the charge I wanted to get. The Vindicare landed 3 wounds on the warlord, the Eversor popped up behind the warriors, and the Zoanthropes were surprised to learn that one of them had been a Callidus all along.

The Eversor rolled well on his charge, but the warriors did better with 2 6s on overwatch that inflicted 9 wounds on the assassin. He went down like a bitch before doing anything at all. The Callidus had a bit more luck and inflicted 2 wounds on a Zoanthrope with her phase blade, conveniently ignoring their 3+ invul saves. The Culexus fared best of all and, charged by so many psykers around him, drilled 5 wounds onto Old One Eye with his animus speculum.

All the infantry made it into charge, eating about 10 casualties from 30+ overwatch shots per gaunt unit but shrugging off the losses and ramming in with 3 attack a piece. By the end of the bayonet charge I had killed maybe 20 gaunts, and the Ogryn had put 3 wounds on a carnifex.

+++Turn 2+++

The nids reeled from the unexpected charge of human fleshbags, withdrawing with the gaunts and Zoanthropes. Purestrain genestealers outflanked with cultists in tow and charged in on a mortar team, while the warlord bug advanced to tie up the guard infantry and cover the diminished gaunt swarms (really the casualties ended up about 50/50 at this point for the gaunt/guard melee).

Nid shooting was light since most units were falling back or in combat, but the zoanthropes nearly smote the Callidus to death, her life spared by 4 simultaneous 4+ invul saves.

The infantry took more losses, but even with morale losses kept the bugs tied up across the entire front. Old One Eye kills 3 Ogryn in a single round of combat.

3 hours left for Konor round 4. Imperium is losing on all fronts.

Here is the consequences of losing :

>At the Konorian Relay itself, Chaos forces defend their tortured wards with savage determination, unleashing blistering cascades of gunfire and artillery upon those who look to breach the basilica walls. If the Imperials cannot break through this formidable barrier, the agony of the tortured astropaths will only flare brighter, drowning Vanitor in the surging tides of the warp. Surely the damnation of the entire Konor System will swiftly follow.

Can the Imperium pull a comeback?

IG is up. Those infantry squads locked in combat pull out, and those out line up into orderly ranks. Get Back in the Fight! And First Rank Fire, Second Rank Fire! Orders cover the field and lasgun volleys chew up the already-depleted bug ranks and tack a few wounds on the monsters. The Culexus again takes 3 wounds on the enemy warlord, though his psykout grenade completely fails to wound. The Vindicare knock a few wounds off, too, and the Ordo Xenos Inquisitor dominates Old One Eye and tries to force him to use crushing claws on the carnifex next to him. All four attack miss. Finally, all the chimeras hear the mortar team getting torn apart behind them, turn around, and light up that terrain piece with heavy flamers, multilasers, and heavy stubbers, dropping all the genestealers but 1 and the broodlord.

The entire Imperial line charges back into melee. Straken compeltely fails to wound the warlord, and Yarrick fails to wound Old One Eye. Nork does headbutt the warlord for 3 wounds, though, yet it is not enough to fell the beast. As an afterthought I throw the attacks of my last 12 guardsmen at the thing and they take the last wound down, killing it with monoknife bayonets. victory is fleeting, though, as old One Eye gets his vengeance and lands 9 wounds on Yarrick, whose refractor field stops all but 2 of them. He fails one of his 3+ get back up rolls, which I spend a command point to reroll and he still fails it. Fuck.

+++Aftermath+++

At this point the store is about to close, so we call it a draw. While it’s clear the battle will swing my way when one of my many character picks up the relic and just runs away with it, all my infantry and vehicles blocking for him, at this stage of the game both warlords are dead and both deployment zones are violated. We shake hands and promise to start the next game earlier should we ever play again (2 turns took almost 3 hours).

I was disappointed with the Callidus and Eversor assassins, and the Ogryn definitely didn’t do well against the carnifexes, especially Old One Eye. It seems like I should have used FRFSRF on the bugs during turn 1 instead of charging with all my infantry, which did almost as much damage to me as to him. Then again, it did invalidate many of his units, which all fell back or were locked the following turn. Altogether it was a fun gimmick to try, but I’m not convinced it’s better than just shooting those lasrifles instead.

Straken’s buff was good, but he himself didn’t do anything at all, even with his anti-monster ability. Yarrick likewise did nothing at all – really the only characters that pulled their weight were the vindicare, culexus, and Nork, who did more damage than all the officers combined just by slamming his face into the biggest bug on the table.
Fun game, but I’m hoping to actually get a full 6 turns in sometime in the future.

A couple more pics inbound.

Well here's the first dreadknight I've ever made, got it for a GMDK.

You would think with so many fucking parts it would have at least some basic leg articulation but no, of course not.

Still with a bit of a torso twist and arm positioning he at least looks a bit dynamic, which is better than the action figure pose on the box.

Leaving off the chest harness really solved the baby carrier issue for me, now he just looks like he has a big belt.

I'm debating whether I want him to have a banner (as seen attached with the Mk2 finger&thumb combo). He's my only dreadknight so it's not like he has to stand out but on the other hand a grandmaster should be ostentatious

None of the models in the command squad I used in this game are conversions, just vanilla models painted the same color scheme.

Meh. They can't get the Pred's quadlas, and their "shoot twice" only helps against the closest model, which... can put them in shifty situations. Maybe check out FW Chaos dreads.

They can be a decent backline artillery piece if that's your thing. I'd still recommend a Predator though, quad-las is a godsend against some of the armies I've faced and I've yet to find a situation where it's useless.

>How many colours did you use for the blade?

Black, grey, white, and green.

I primed the whole model black, then drybrushed grey and white to make all the recesses and raised areas transition from dark to light, respectively.
Used thinning medium for the nase colors to let the pre-baked lighting show throw.
So, for the blade it's just thinned out green on top of black to white drybrush transition. Hit the edges of the sword with another white drybrush to make it pop.
>>
>>55035319
The Chaos Dreadnoughts look gorgeous, but are pretty expensive moneywise. I've been tempted to pick up the Alpha Legion or Black Legion frame, though.

>>55035322
Alright. So, beyond what I already have, if I get 2 Helbrutes, what else would I need for a solid list?
>>
>>55035349
Could always just Chaos up some loyal dreads.

A big heavy-hitter unit would be good for you. Magnus is probably the strongest choice. There's also Fateweaver, Chaos Knights, various daemon princes and Greater Daemons, etc.
>>
>>55035349
If you're going for Black Legion, get Abaddon. He's really the only point of them besides the decent color scheme.
>>
>>55035357
Do this. One of the perks with chaos is the limitless conversion potential
>>
>>55035346
Hmm, I would have mixed some green and white to make about three different greens and dry brushed them on to create a random distribution of colour, then dry brushed with white, followed by a green wash.

Though it depends on the look you're going for.
>>
>>55035357

Almost anyone so long as you're using appropriate weapons. For legions like the AL, IW, and TS regular dreads are far more thematically appropriate than Helbrutes.

>>55035385
>Does that work? Like, would people accept that?

Yeah dude. Only fags hate conversions.

Taken from 1d4chan

>Banners: One odd quirk about all the Troop choices is that you're given the option to take 1 Instrument and 1 Banner per 10 models in the unit. However, your unit can only benefit from one of each of them. What's the point of this, you may ask? Summoning rolls and reinforcement points in matched, that's why. You see, you still have to spend the points on the models, but nothing says you have to decide what models are in each unit. This means you can have a 30 model unit ready just in case you roll that 15 for summoning, but can bring them in one 10-man unit at a time if you only get a few 5+ rolls and they can all still have those extra goodies to help them out. Food for thought.

Thanks for the heads up.
I really like bringing scabby into the fray. How viable do you think sperging out full "hero-hammer" with a list skeleton like:

Scabbithrax the bloated
Corbax utterblight
Plague hulk
A few heralds of nurgle
Daemon prince w/ wings

All pyskers take the fleshy abundance (d3 heal) ability.
The games I've played with this setup always ends up the same. Opponent focus fires everything into corbax or scabby, doesn't kill it, then I heal it back up to close to full health. Meanwhile, I'm ripping units in half at point blank range and the enemy gets weaker and weaker. Am I doing something right?

It was a bad rule to have attachments in a game where individual models don't matter.

Until 40k scales the fuck down into warmachine level where individual models are getting shot at on model per model basis, there's no reason for that ass rule to exist.

All of an infantry dude's guys are part of a unit but they're not the same M O D E L
if a model can draw line of sight it can shoot
a tank, while considered a unit, is still a single model
a single guardsman is also a model and draws LOS the exact same way

I know that's what he means but a sorcerer legion should have access to both, if not also the tzeentch table as well. TS are fairly rigid when it comes to fluff and tabletop, they don't generally use vehicles or heavy ordnance at all. None of their units can take anything heavier than a S5 gatling gun, mortal wound dispensing and all kinds of support shit is their schtick. The more disciplines they have access to, the fluffier it is and the more sorcerers they can field (which is also fluffy) before that fucktarded "Rule of One" comes into effect.

Otherwise you're either going to have an ancient psyker legion fielding max 2 proper psykers or an ancient psyker legion only throwing out a spell even the shittiest Rincewind-tier psyker can cast.

Narritive, though GW really doesn't seem to like that type of play nowadays.

Found some cheap SC Slaanesh kits and I've been wanting to dabble in Daemons for a little while. I know they're not top tier by any standards right now, but how does this look as a starting point?

Seekers x 7 with Icon and Instrument

1000 point force
>Spearhead Detachment
Herald on Steed
Herald on Steed
Seeker Chariot
Exalted Seeker Chariot x 2

Going all in on the Heralds so as to have a good Smite game and as well as the power that gives the enemy -1 to hit. Getting the first turn will be tough but I should be able to close the distance very quickly and I'm hoping Quicksilver Quickness or whatever the First Strike ability is called will pull me through from there.

>If you are stationed amongst pilots, I would recommend avoiding fraternisation. Most are near deaf from exposure to the engines on their craft, and therefore speak at an exceedingly obnoxious volume, and they are prone to all manner of bizarre exaggeration. I’ve heard officers of the Aeronautica Imperialis claim to have won dogfights with mechanical dragons, while another was screaming something or other about a gigantic Heretic Astartes with the wings of a fly and an enormous scythe. While I have no doubt that our foe have been reduced to the use of farming implements, having rejected the blessed Adeptus Mechanicus, I doubt that this “Mortarion” is anything other than a particularly overgrown Drenthalian mosquito. Daemon Primarch? The name itself is a paradox!

The crusaders squad is a lots of eggs in a small basket, I would drop the lascannon

Not a fan of storm shields on 1w models, I'd rather have sarge and half squad with double claws, rest with double chainsword as ablative.

Consider upgrading the dread to twin Las to make up for the lost anti-tank

Helm is not so great as a relic wen your cap is running around with a single squad to buff, I would replace it with teeth of terra.

Okay, so it's both. The proxying is just due to outset cost and I accept that. The WAAC is mainly due to the fact I usually enter the tournaments here for fun and play a fun fluffy Khorne Deamonkin and end up position middling but getting best army.

This time I'd like to position for once. This is mainly due to a couple of WAAC guys who even in the friendly on or matches are bringing either knight spam or eldar smite spam and go around bragging how bad everyone's else armies are. I just want to beat them the once to shut them up.

8" Pistol d6 Autohit S4 AP-1 D1

Its pretty good but not gamebreaking; they're T4 2W ++4Sv which isn't bad but melts under dedicated attention and that 8" range means they normally won't last long in a shooting match.

They're neat for bothering melee units that wouldn't want to eat the Overwatch. The Exalted Flamer is the same, but also has
18" Heavy d3 S9 AP-4 D3, which isn't autohit. It cant potentially hit pretty hard with that but a Heavy weapon with 18" range isn't that great and its just as likely to roll 1 Attack and 1 Damage.

Thank you for the analisys. I'm a complete beginner so any advice is very welcome.

I was thinking that the helm would help with giving buffs while the whole army moves forward. Would a chaplain not be better if the HQ if he runs around with the vang. I also like the lord executioner power axe model thats why I went with the axe.

Would it be better to just drop the heavy weapon on the crusader squad or take something cheaper?

My thoughts on the dread were that he would be moving up as fast as he could to slap something big while still getting the aura from cap (hence the bigger buff range). Would a las dread be better with missiles instead of ccw?

Tau army. Liked the look of brown Tau, so I went with a forest theme, brown and green.

Sept wise, they're Tash'var. Went with this for a few reasons. Firstly, the sept colour is dark red, which suits my scheme well. Secondly, in their (very limited) official fluff they're pretty much locked in a war with Orks, which is appropriate because my housemate who I play with sometimes collects orks. We share our bits bins for basing purposes, and he plans to have some looted Tau vehicles.

Character name and story wise I'm not really there yet, I feel like I want to let it evolve through play a little bit. I like the name Clearsky for a commander though (ala Brightsword, Farsight, Shadowsun etc).

The Void Vipers are a pretty small time Kabal which is how their Archon likes it. He likes to play himself up as cunning and cautious but he's actually just terrified of trying to make it into the big league, failing and getting eliminated so he keeps making excuses that seem plausible as to why to keep it lowkey. He's recently entered an alliance with a fairly young (as these things go) Haemonculus who lives like a rock star, resculpting his body every week or so, banging Wyches, creating and enjoying the wildest drugs known to Dark Eldarkind and generally acting as the freewheeling polar opposite to the twitchy and high strung Archon.

Still trying to settle on good names for the Archon and Haemonculus, as well as model up the latter, though at least I have something in mind for that.

The Takwin Admech Explorator Fleet, in green, bronze, black metal and orange glowy bits. Has a high proportion of Divisio Genetor Magi and thus makes use of plenty of biological and cybernetic constructs instead of the normal robots and Priests.
Renegade Mechanicum, around since the Heresy tucked away in an obscure system in the Ghoul Stars, now a pretty massive lunar and orbital complex surrounding the main planet, which is a Death World a la Catachan and thus provides plenty of suitable creatures.
Their fleet has seen battle in recent millenia, mostly by raiding and poisoning civilian planets for more fodder and fuel, but have yet to be identified or pursued. Inquisitorial attention had been planned for the "Pale Wasting", but then suddenly Great Rift. They're now reaving further afield, looking primarily to engage Space Marines to retrieve their implants for study as well as beating back Nurgle encroaching on their turf. A small battlegroup has set up in the Konor system, bombarding Chaos with waves of cloned cannon fodder, chemical and biological weapons and strike forces, but refusing all hails from the Imperial forces. Given that their Genetus creatures are more vulnerable to Nurgle warp-plagues than cybernetics and robots, they've taken to servitorization of fallen Khornates to increase resistance to sorcery.

The Takwin forces as a whole are led by Archmagos Xander Treides, who has uploaded his mind into cogitator banks spread all over his flagship to use as a backup when his proxy bodies die. Which happens a lot, since he can't fight for shit. Eventually he realised the corruption of his data from interference during transfers was slowly driving him completely crazy, so he locked himself purely within the ship's systems, losing his memories and identity and effectively becoming the Machine Spirit of the Ark Mechanicus Outside Context Problem.

I wanted to paint my nids red/orange because its an aggressive color, just like the way I wanted to play the army. I picked the skin to be the bright red/orange part.
Then I decided I need a contrast color, something dark, but interesting - I settled on making the carapces go from black, to purple to light blue. The little white highlights were more of a random accident, while hightlighting the tiny corners and stuff, I thought "hmm, wonder how this would look if I put the white everywhere". Turns out it looks pretty damn boss.

I don't really know how I'd name them, haven't had any cool ideas for that yet. I suppose I could call the "Behemoth prime", since their color scheme, by chance, happens to be very similiar to Behemoth's. I guess I could fluff it up as a small splinter that survived the destruction at macragger or something.
My Swarmlord is known as the HQ-killer at my store tho, no other Warlord has killed more enemy warlords than him. Whenever someone would brag about "muh chaos lord with his 3+invlun and black mace is soooo gud", everyone would point them at me, so that my swarmlord/hive tyrant might teach them humility.

He acts by melding his mind with those of some of his subordinates, using their memories and setting his considerable mental skill and power to whatever task is required. This causes great mental stress and eventually full augmetic burn-out to the host, but grants great power in the meantime. Also puts me in a bit of a bind if I want to write anything from his perspective, since his internal monologue and memories would have to be in second person.

The forces of the main fleet are commanded by High Magos Reductor Canaris, who has a penchant for expendable chaff and a vicious war-style, often conducting orbital bombardment on his own lines to drive back particularly stubborn enemy forces. Rarely seen on the battlefield other than back from the front lines ministering to artillery, he discards outward augmentation aside from the traditional servo-arms, although he has still enhanced his mental capabilities significantly to bette command his legions of troops and squadrons of battleships.

There's also a Malinax Knight contingent, who I've given a bunch of assorted grandiose names but haven't really written fluff for.
Working on a cool custom spider-body abeyant for my Archmagos, as well as his space whale pimp transport, which I guess will use the Marauder Destroyer rules since it can be my Warlord now.

>>
>>55036962

Well, poweraxes are great, but the teeth of terra is basically a poweraxe with extra attacks (S+1 AP-2 D3 extra attacks)

Don't get me wrong, the helm is a great relic, but in a 500pt game you should not have problems in keeping your stuff within 6, and if/when you charge cap and veterans forward the 3" extra is not likely to make a difference.

For crusaders, 2 plasmas are good, no penalties while shooting on the move and not too expensive.
If you plan them to just sit on an objective on the other hand, drop all the special/combi weapons and take an heavy weapon.

For dread, again it depends on your plan. if moving forward assault cannon is good, but then you would be low on ranged anti-tank (but that is not so critical at 500pt) missile/las dread is the pure gun-line option, which is also nice but fits a different purpose.

Las/melee: gunline with counter-charge potential
Las/missile: pure gunline
Asscann/melee: advancing

Jokes on you, IM the Guardfag!

The Acadian 88th is a fleet based regiment "specializing" in rear guard Garrison duty. A highly superstitious unit, the acadians believe that "Luck" is nothing more than His Emperor's grace at work and the easiest way to maintain it is to keep any and all Aquilas on their gear as bright and shiny as possible. This is harder than it sounds considering their homeworld has constant dust storms and plasma squalls.
With their relic fortress "Digger's Folly", equipped with a Strongpoint Aquilla MacroCannon, the 88th is regularly dropped in to interrupt enemy flanking maneuvers and serve as a living barricade for fellow Imperium forces. Recently, a munitorum transfer error in their favor provided the 88th with 55 crates of fresh, bold looking fatigues (and 10 crates of pre-cooked Lasagna, marked as "Helios Pattern Lasguns") that have given the Regiment a huge morale boost and a new, professional look in stark contrast to their usual faded, dusty reds.

Or something. I'm tired
