Can you transition from the starting adventure in the basic set to one of the campaign books, or are the levels going to be off?
>>
What are some good mini adventures or collection of mini adventures that can be done in a city?
>>
What's a good magic item to give to a level 7 Glamour Bard? I want to give every party member something permanent that suits them. But on the other hand I want just give her a wand if lightning bolt because not every situation calls for a fancy support/control spell, sometimes you just want to shit out some damage. And since I'm running STK with 3 people and not changing encounters, I figure some extra damage can't hurt. What do you all think? Anything that would suit a Glamour Bard better for flavour? She does tend to use her looks to help her get what she wants.
>>
>>55027158
Storm King's Thunder is specifically designed so that you can carry over from LMoP and other adventures, not sure about other campaigns though.
>>
>>55027108
The DM had a Nalfeshnee named Rhino pop up twice in a campeign, cleric just banished him the first time and the second time the ranger beat him back to where he came from

>If your intention is 100% about yourself at the expense of the dignity of all other sentient life, you are evil whether that mindset leads to genocide or only to being loud in a theater.
While his intentions for practicing Necromancy are entirely based on solving his own issues, there's no reason to believe he'd allow his undead to do harm to anyone else. If anything, he's more likely to use the undead to solve peoples issues rather than add to them.
>>
Lads, I've got a bit of a problem. How do I destroy a culture? I'm not talking about a huge nation or a country, I mean about two hundred people or so.
I don't want to kill them or anything, I just find their ways abhorrent, and the gods they worship unacceptable. I want to make them more like us, you know, preferably in a single generation, since we're talking about long-lived elves.

If it helps, I hold significant power of them, being a baron and all.

Similar problem here, my friend.
Only I really like character progression and like to play all the way from 1-20. If I jump in at say, level 5, it's just not the same. I always like the "we're basically shit and could die from a strong gust of wind" levels.

Surely you realise you'd have the same issue even if you did get a new character to play.

I'm running Lost mines of Phandelver and decided to break up the monotony with the goblins in Cragmaw Castle. The goblin priest now has a couple of spells and I tried to homebrew something fun for the mess hall with the goblin head chef Yegg. The party is balanced and consists of 5 lvl 3 characters. I would apreciate it you all could take a look and give me your thoughts.

The fight wil also contain 4 goblin cooks that prepare the meals with their action and use giant cutterly.

Fey are often associated with dreams. Make them into a dreamweaver/catcher type patron. And how about they use literal fey spiders to weave dream catchers. And they're the reason you can never remember that sweet dream you had the night before. They stole it.

What did he mean by this
>>
>>55027491
That's kinda true. Personally, the reason I like sorcerers is because they can do themes rather well. Whereas even though wizards have schools, I feel like you certainly have to diversify.

For example, fire/ice mage is done best by a sorcerer.
Really, the best way to fix sorcerer is by just giving them expanded spell lists. Especially so that you can pick elements other than those two and have enough spells to fill up your kit with.
>>
>>55027491
i agree with you, the problem, of course, is when you go to make a character and go "why am I not just a wizard?"
>>
>>55027525
Druids are the tankiest motherfuckers in this edition, particularly at the levels that 95% of games are played
>>
>>55027525
He meant if you're playing at level 2, or above level 10.
The mid levels, where most campaigns kinda sit around or end, they aren't super great.
>>
>>55027525
Are you implying I'm wrong? The only class that beats a Druid is a Wizard, maybe a Bard depending on builds
>>
>>55027498
While that is a great idea the dream aspect won't really effect the character I'm working on cause is an elf any other ideas would be great.
>>
>>55027592
Sure but it could affect his party. They still do meditation and enter a dream-like state even if they're elves.

But anyway, tell me more. What exactly are you envisioning?

Powerful firearms become ubiquitous. How does this affect each class?
Initial thoughts:
>Barbarian
Their damage now even weaker compared to other classes, barbarians become shock-troop disruption tanks.
>Bard
Bards use firearms until their cantrips catch up; valor bards may continue using firearms into later levels.
>Cleric
Clerics use firearms until their cantrips catch up. Divine Strike clerics probably don't need damage cantrips at all.
>Druid
Wild Shape's relative damage is nerfed. Druids either stick to guns and attack/utility spells or convince the DM to let them wield guns in ape form.
>Fighter
With many attacks and Action Surge, fighters become specialists in heavy firearms, or adopt a SWAT-style shield-and-pistol loadout.
>Monk
Monks become really bad, since their CC requires hitting in melee. Kensei might still be good?
>Paladin
If your DM allows smiting with ranged weapons, paladins definitely go for pistols. Maybe even two of them.
If not, they're still viable as shock troops with occasional damage bursts.
>Ranger
Rangers change very little. They just use guns instead of bows. Probably big ones, because ranger action economy likes bonus actions.
>Rogue
Melee rogues become less common (although still possible with a barbarian or paladin on the team). Ranged rogues change very little.
>Sorcerer
When not casting spells, uses a gun to attack, except when twinning cantrips. Switches to cantrips exclusively once they catch up.
>Warlock
Can you get a ranged pact weapon? If yes, probably still better to just spam Eldritch Blast, except when aiming to smite (assuming that's also permitted).
>Wizards
Same as sorcerers, except no twinning cantrips.

Modern weaponry or dwarwn flintlocks and so on?
>>
So can I get clarification on how Ritual Caster works, if I have 13 wisdom can I take wizard ritual casting and vice versa
>>
>>55027859
Even the DMG's Renaissance firearms could produce some shift (1-handed 1d10 ranged weapon is no joke), but I was thinking closer to the modern firearms table. Something that really shakes up the melee/ranged balance.
>>

>>55027228
The adults are a lost cause. Try to convert them through diplomatic means and they'll ignore you. Try to crush their beliefs and you'll only drive them underground. Execute their leaders or high priests and you'll only make martyrs.
Take the children under six years of age, and while their minds are still maleable, teach them the ways of whichever god seems best at the time. Release them back into the community en masse when they reach their twenties. The new generation is now your own personal zealot army, and their families can't do a single thing about it.

I wish Wizards gave clerics more options to be good at melee. I mean, sure, yeah, spirit guardians is fucking great and makes party's fighter really envious of me, but casting it in every combat gets stale after a while. Sometimes I don't want to AoE people around me, I just want to whack people really hard.
I wish there was a spell that made me really good at hitting people with a sword, even not as good as fighter.
>>
>>55028199
I dunno, I quite enjoy martials.
When you start getting into high levels though, they do start feeling lesser.
However, I think if you've got a good DM they will start giving shit to martials to bring up their power level to also feel somewhat like gods, but in different ways. Which isn't a defense of the system, but just saying it can be helped massively by a good DM.
>>
>>55028325
yeah i know
but there are some DM's with the mage fuck yeah mentality
>>
>>55027903
Jesus, that's a long story.

Basically he was my AL DM back during the CoS season, and when he was under that very strict and rigid rails he was a very responsible and judicious DM, hell I owe him for teaching me the ropes on this game.

But eventually the season was done and the group decided that man it sure would have been nice to also do Curse of Strahd with the same characters, who were about level 7-8, and little did I know the guy took it as "permition to be" epic"" and the sudden lack of hard restrictions on HOMEBREW ruined the whole deal.

Every session is a fucking slog the guy has 0 Role-play proficiency and literally added grinding mils spots that do nothing other than" kill this, then kills this, then kill this and collect loot at the bottom" that would destroy us multiple sessions.

The group legit considers it a filler borefest if se didn't have a 3 hour combat encounter

And because my party members are people who legitimately said "I want to play a Druid because I want infinite wildshapes at level 20" I'm kind of stuck here out of Devotion for me dearly beloved character whom I intend to give a proper send off before never looking back

I'm already DM ing this adventure to a close group of friends and the drastic difference makes me want to weep.
>>
>>55028305
War cleric magic weapon is pretty good desu.
Having +3 to hit and damage and then you've got your additional radiant damage. Shit feels nice.

Don't compare yourself to a fighter though. You're not, and you shouldn't be. Hitting hard in melee is the realm of fighters, rogues, and barbs. You get to be a full caster. Can't have it all, senpai.

What are the pros and cons of Berserker versus Totem Barbarian?
>>
>>55028386
Yeah dude I know what you mean.
To me, combat is usually the "borefest." Roleplay is where it's at. I almost exclusively treat combat as a way to resolve certain issues. It's never "the" solution, per say. But sometimes things inevitably will come to blows.

It makes me so fucking happy when players come up with a good way to bypass combat. It's so much less work for me and they feel smart after doing so.
>>
>>55027230

Note: these are just my opinions based upon what I've seen players do, along with the theoretical max of what the class can do. Sticking to the PHB stuff, because a lot of the UA stuff can be placed into S through B-tier.

I parts that have it are all the parts they are in until the people without it have a light source or other means to see in the dark.

Although, if they've got casters in the group that can learn dark vision, it's not a bad idea to give them a headsup that portions of it are completely dark. And DM hint them into taking dark vision to help their party members that can't see.

Repeating from last thread:

What are some interesting motivations for an Aboleth who wants to ascend into godhood by consuming the essence of a Great Old One?

I mean, revenge against the gods is out of the table since, in the setting, there's no actual proof that the gods exist, or that they had any part in creating/transforming the world.

If you're looking for a motivation that justifies the supreme assholishness of aboleths in lusting for godpowers, just know that all "justified badguy" plots EVER do is make the villain look like a whiny little bitch.

Go on, open challenge to the thread: name an evil villain from anything and the "justification" the author uses so that we can all "identify" with him and think he's such a well-rounded three-dimensional character and not some little fuckin' bitch who just couldn't deal with tragedy like a sane person or is coming up with excuses for "I wanna have the biggest dick".

It's basically unplayable. The spells are worthless, the robot is super strong for a few levels and then becomes worthless, and both the gun and the alchemist are largely outdone by just being a warlock or other range character (with the one exception of the fluff breaking healing ability that lets you give an entire army a healing potion with no cost or downtime but is otherwise pretty worthless)

>Warlocks can choose Intelligence instead of Charisma as their spellcasting modifier

Thanks for the lowdown. I love the idea of the class but I was afraid of it being a trap option for my players.

If they still want to use Charisma, they can. I just wanted to provide the option of another INT Caster for someone who doesn't want to necessarily be a wizard. A Pact of the Tome warlock, especially, would be similar.

12th level Life Cleric here, I'm enjoying my character a lot but I feel like I there's something I'm missing about this class that puts them over the top.

We got by a lot because our Fighter, who is dead now, would be the greatest fucking meat shield in the world. We're real nervous now.

Poking from afar seems like the best path. We have to infiltrate a stronghold first, so close quarters are scary. I suppose that'll be our Druid's time to shine?

Am I right to assume that "first aid" isn't the Healer's Kit in the "Stabilizing A Creature" description? Because in the Healer's Kit description, it says I can stabilize a create without needing a Wisdom (Medicine) check. If so, my question is... what's the first aid? Mystics are mechanically inferior to wizards by a sizable margin. They do need nerfed, in that their versatility is too high in specific manners, but they also need changes that improve a specific niche for them to play in, preferably granted by archetype since its fairly meaningless at the moment.

Things that the class is good at, including why they can be issues:
Versatility, they can be proficient in any save or skill with minimal investment.
Start with better gear than they should. Why studded leather at character creation?
Psionic Focus are, again, extremely versatile and too easy to change. They aren't ever a decision, but rather
>oh, im doing X, let me switch to buffing that
and should have changed on a short rest instead
They lack any "tells". They have built in subtle spell for everything they do, and none of their social "spells" can give away that they are pulling something

Things that the class is good and are fine:
They have a variety of different "attacking" options with various debuffs, you rarely feel ineffectual, despite not being AS good at CC as a wizard or damaging as a martial.
Similarly to bards, they can fill any empty niche, but not to specialization levels.
They are another Int class, and some of the options aren't 100% caster
PP and its limitations/strengths are different enough to not just feel 100% like spells again.
Most of the things they can do aren't as cost effective as other characters, but also don't suck

But why though:
Archetypes are ass. Most have one mildly interesting bit to it, and you are best off picking for a single feature, since you can just trade out disciplines anyway.
Nomadic Mind is the worst designed discipline period. It's focus is insanely potent, and the rest of it is ass, so it feels bad for everyone.
Capstone steps on the toes of several other capstones, not that its a big deal
They mirror full caster progression... but then just stop scaling abruptly whatsoever. Level 9-20 is all the fucking same.
>>
>>55032926
fewer stupid memes, my man
>>
>>55032971
>They mirror full caster progression... but then just stop scaling abruptly whatsoever. Level 9-20 is all the fucking same.
They're essentially Sorcerers running on Spell Points, the tradeoff for the ability to spam level 5 spells all day being that they've got nothing higher.
>>
>>55032971
Their Psionic Mastery and Consumptive Power or whatever extra psi points make them just about match up with full caster progression actually.
>>
>>55033016
Consumptive power is a resource recharge, and Psionic Mastery is a method of using multiple concentration effects. Neither scales what they are actually doing at all, and neither gives them new or improved options.
>>
>>55033051
My point is that they do give them more psi points to match up with full caster spell points progression. Hiding them behind an inconsequential HP loss and restricted extra pools doesn't change that.
>>
>>55033118
You are missing the point. Having extra available points doesn't scale what you are actually doing, until you run out. You never go above the 7 max used per manifestation, which you get at 9. Exactly at 9, you are on par with casters and their 5th level spell slots. You then never improve from that. No new effects, no increased damage. It would be as if you never got level 6+ spell slots, and just got more 1-5. Sure, its useful, but its also stagnant and doesn't scale.
>>
>>55031350
Works great in a white room. In practice you'll likely have your DM doing something to limit you. They can also just ready action for when you close, spell cast, or ranged attack.
>>
>>55033163
The benefit of Mystics is that you can utilize multiple "level 5" effects at once. A Mystic can action-power, bonus-power, and reaction-power all in the same turn (the Animate Weapon+Lethal Strike+Knock Back wombocombo). While this isn't really anything NEW that you can do, the total power does scale to that of spells higher than 5, even if it's mostly in the realm of utility or single target damage rather than some of the more impressive things Wizards can do.

It's unique and versatile enough that I don't have a problem with it. The class is a little bit frontloaded as a result, but so are several others, and that's preferable to being rear-loaded when no one ever gets to those higher levels to begin with.

Let's say you hit level 17. Casters get their 9th level spells, half casters get their 5th level spells, fighters get a second action surge, barbarians get super criticals, monks get d10s. As a mystic, you get the fourth use of an ability that amounts to 11 points, or 1/2 more use of what you say they get from leveling.

>>
>>55033382

>>
>>55031350
Booming Blade is a better option for a feat rather than Defensive Duelist for a Swashbuckler Roge even though the name sounds like it should be the other way around. You have Uncanny Dodge and readied actions using your reactions already, no need to have something else contest your reactions.
>>
>>55033411
You'd probably want to start as a Rogue for the extra proficiencies.

>>55033416
I'm not disagreeing that they don't really get new tricks at higher levels. I'm disagreeing that they suck or are boring because of that. The basic kit of the class is powerful enough and the regular discipline gain continues to open up their versatility in a big way.

September 4th probably.

My only point was that leveling above 9, which i admit should be 11, doesn't really change anything, and it makes leveling specifically feel bad compared to full casters.

While their options definitely put them above martial tier in terms of mechanical interest, they definitely lag behind casters once that point hits.

Its a weak point of the class, and one that i feel is more of a design issue, rather than a power one.

I'm on my second mystic now, so it's not like i dislike the class, just that it has some issues in its current form.

I would do shadow monk and thief - suddenly all the more absurd mobility, and fast hands letting you pull off ninja sheningans.

Plus expertise stealth and acrobatics.

Some of my friends and I are starting a new game. We started at level 2, and right now I'm a Rogue 1/Bard 1, but I don't really know how best to find my own niche in the party. So far, besides me, there are:

Cleric 2, Trickery
Sorcerer 2, Wild Magic
Warlock 2, Fey Pact of Tome
Fighter 2, Eldritch Knight

That made me laugh because I imagined it on the other side of the morality spectrum.

"Hey God, are you all good up there? Can I sacrifice a goat, flay a virgin? Good to go?"
