dear /tg/,
I was thinking about how we have Cyberpunk, and Post-cyberpunk, just as a kind of accepted progression (denial, then acceptance, I guess).
I'm wondering, if there's Space Opera, is there Pre-Space Opera... like civilisations on the verge of FTL, locked to their own systems, but with enough technology to putt around intra-system, and maybe similar limitations in terms of (not) thinking as an interstellar civilisation.

That's just called hard science fiction.

Space Opera isn't just about tech level, but about certain themes and genre conventions. Burroughs' works are considered space opera without the need for jumping all over the galaxy.
High adventure, epic battles and the focus on personal stories are are better indicators of space opera settings than tech level.
