So starting to get into Age of Sigmar, I need to build a basic 1000 point Skaven army to play with.

I found a post on leddit that has some basic 1000 point armies, and one that seemed good to start with was the spire of dawn boxed set and a box of stormvermin.

That's 1 warlock engineer, 1 warlord, 40 (20x2) clanrats, 1 warpfire thrower team, 1 poison wind mortar team, 2 rat ogors and 20 stormvermin. Cost is $80 for the spire box + $50 for the stormvermin.

Lookin at the point cost though to just hit a 1000 point battles, this says that everything non-storm vermin is 680 points. They fill it out with 20 stormvermin at 280 points, but I noticed the Doomwheel is 140. Would I be better off snagging dual doomwheels to fill that out? Doomwheels seem pretty fuckin awesome and I love the model, would love to build and paint one so if I can get that in that'd be sweet.

I would say you should consider to find someone willing to share the cost of SoD with you for aelves models and buy two SoD boxes. You can also sell them on ebay or FB groups, same as spare square bases. You want as many warpfire throwers, rat ogors and clanrats as you can get. Then you can try to find some wheels and cannons cheaply. That's my casual 1000pts list and I had a lot of fun with it

I would agree with Path to Glory being your next purchase, at least for the time being, considering that it pretty much is a larger scale Skirmish.

General's Handbook is very useful and adds some things to the game, but not actually necessary. Look into it after you finish a Path to Glory campaign.

I strictly use spears on anything above 10, as I value the added range way more than a minor stat upgrade. Having an easier time of piling in and such is important, as is maximising attack volume against big shit.
And with clanrat units now being 20+ baseline I guess I'll never use blades for anything except maybe filler.

keep the herald with the drones for mortal wounds, NEVER get charged with blightkings because they are not very durable, use the bearers and gors as meat shield and you should be fine.
Always play on defence, i usually use a human line of plaguebearers as a meat shield, so they die when charged but everything else behind(usually blightkings)piles in and counterattacks safely.

It's a huge long shot, but I'd love to see Lion Rangers become their own army. There one of the few high elf units I really like the aesthetic of, and what little lore they have in AoS is pretty neat.

But more realistically, I'd like the Wanderers to get their own battletome. The models they were given towards the end of 8th are beautiful, and forest murder elves are always fun. It's kind of a shame though, because they really can't compete with the more recent army releases. Hell, I'd even be happy if they were reunited with Sylvaneth in a battletome, with the lore being that they're trying to prove themselves to Alarielle again.

But hey, they're getting allegiance abilities in GHB17, so maybe that'll make Wanderers a bit more competitive.

So the other day I was saying that I've spent the past year painting up some plague monks from the pestilens Box with the verminlord (in that time I also did the plague claw). Well I finally pushed through 9 of them this week and finished.
This being said, I'm in need of a quicker painting method, and one anon suggested this

I stand by the idea any Khorne list can be made effective simply by making Khorgos Kul (dude from the starter set) the general. He can pile in from 8" away, and can kill instantly on a 5+ wound roll, though he can only be in a battalion with Goretide models. Other than that, take a bloodsecrator and whatever battleline you want. GHB2 has lots of cool Blood Tithe and artefact stuff, you can't go wrong with any of them.

BKs are damn scary, but they're only especially on charges. If they charge, a unit of 5 gets 16 3+/3+/-1/D3. So don't let them. Throw chaff at them.

Is he also playing pure Soulblight? If so, you can expect the leader to be a vamp lord on zombie dragon with most likely either Red Fury, which will let him attack twice, or the damn Cloak, which will give him a flying 28" move. It also has basically an auto-hit breath attack. Try to manintain your distance and shoot it down to degrade its attack profile. It's also very likely he might bring multiple vamp lords with Flying Horror, they're the main debuff unit of Soulblight, only 140ppm but can give enemy units -1 attack per weapon. They can fly 10", so again, throw chaff at them.

You're Nurgle. Tarpits is your thing. You should be fine.

How do you mean? Sticking to one specific subfaction will grant you with potentially better bonuses in the form of your Allegiance Ability and Command Trait, as well as artefacts, magical items and shit you can give to your heroes. For example, sticking to the Blades of Khorne subfaction grants me the ability to use Blood Tithes (points that tally up when units die and can then be spent on neat tricks), and every Khorne hero gets a Khorne-flavoured artefact or daemonic gift (depending on if they have the Mortal or Daemon keyword).

Compare that to if I mixed Chaos Gods, I would only be able to have "Chaos" as my allegiance and I would get a much more generic Allegiance Ability, and much more generic artefacts. The benefit there of course is that I can add in units which cover my weaknesses, so sticking to my subfaction or going general Chaos with majority my subfaction is a choice I have to make which will affect what kind of army I run - do I double down on what my subfaction does well, or do I generalise and cover any holes?

To make things a bit more interesting and that choice easier to make, the 2017 Handbook that's literally out in a couple days will add the ability to take up to 400 points of allies without affecting Allegiance. So for eg. with my Khorne dudes I'm planning to take 400 points of Monsters of Chaos which will help me debuff enemy units and get Mortal Wounds, and then I still get all my Blood Tithes and Khorne-specific artefacts.

It comes down to whether or not you are able to apply pressure in your chosen faction. Order factions tend to have way more options for ranged combat than Chaos or Death, for example, so they're the ones most likely to seek allies with bows.

Nah the Skullcrushers are the mortal unit and can be armed with either Glaives or Axes, both options come in the box. The Demonic dudes are Bloodcrushers and a a separate kit. The Bloodcrushers come in the Daemons of Khorne start collecting and their own box as well but I would just get the start collecting if you want them.

Initial impressions:

Slann seem decent, but still lacking in offense. I guess GW want them to be purely defensive?
I can see myself building Thunderquake Starhost lists with a Slann as the general.

Masters of Order is great. Unbind anywhere - does that mean line of sight is no longer required? Increasing the range is a nice bonus, I can see it working well with a Balewind Vortex.
Lords of Space and Time is insane. Two words: Teleporting Bastiladon.

Slann Command Traits are all amazing.
Saurus command traits are hot garbage. We can already get these effects from other units - who thought these would be a good idea?
Skink Command traits are very cool, but I don't see myself ever using a Skink general since none of them have command abilities.

>Artefacts
Zoetic Dial - Skink Priest already allows us to reroll saves. Useless.
Incandescent Retrices - Very good. RAW it does not cost any points to use this ability. The biggest weakness is that if you get hit by some serious overkill then there is no chance for this to activate. If you die by 1 damage then this is amazing, otherwise it is trash. Might be useful for a Slann?
Blade of Realities - Give it to a Carnosaur bite attack. 10/10
Light of Dracothion - Situationally useful. Might be useful for a Slann since they can unbind anywhere.
Coronal Shield - Treelord stomp is good. You can bring a starseer to reroll the 4+.
Prism of Amyntok - Looks like shit at first but if you teleport the unit into range with Lords of Space and Time then you are dealing D3 mortal wounds on a 3+ , which is great since Seraphon normally don't do many mortal wounds. I would take this on a durable hero like a Sunblood so you can get multiple rounds of value.

Initial impressions:

Fangs of Sotek
First to Battle is better than it seems. Saurus units with drummers can March, which doubles their movement. That means the +3" movement turns into +6". Saurus warriors can haul 16" across the board on the first turn and capture any objective. Knights can move 20" (!!) the first turn.

First Oldblood
This ability is great. You can either make the Slann your general to reroll save rolls against shooting, or you can use the command abilities from a Sunblood (already in the battalion)

Bellowing Carnosaur
I love Bloodroar, this will be even better. Does this mean you add 1 to determining whether it activates, or do you add 1 when determining how many additional models flee?

Not sure I like the required Sunclaw Starhost because Saurus Warriors are only good in large groups and that jacks up the cost of this battalion even further. It does fill out your required battleline, though.

Seems like a cool concept - summon your entire army into play turn 1 and have a perfect counter to the enemy plan. Does it even work, though? I'm not sure you can field a unit in the battalion and also summon it into play... The unit doesn't exist before it is summoned, so how does this work??

Firelance Starhost fills out your Battleline with Knights (a very good battleline unit) and lets your entire army be a single deployment (awesome). At only 60 points this is one of the cheapest battalions in GHB17 and paying 60 for an artefact + single deployment is very good.

Thats not how damage in this game works. You apply damage 1 at a time and check if the model is slain. If it is slain, you move the remaining damage onto the next model in the unit. If there are no models left in the unit then the unit is slain and the remaining damage is discarded.

But an effect like the Rectrices happens immediately as you die and before the remaining damage is discarded. So if you get hit with 2 damage and have 1 wound left you will suffer the first damage and be slain, at which point the Rectrices effect kicks in and heals you for D3 wounds, and then the next point of damage is applied.

It even includes the wording "if the model is not slain, then remove it from the battlefield" which is consistent with how the game mechanics work.

If they wanted it to work on overkill then it would cost points because the model would be slain and set up again. This takes effect as a replacement to the slain trigger, so it does not cost points.

Do you think they would just print a stronger version of Ring of Immortality?

We have one battalion, and that battalion grants autopass morale checks on rolls of 1-3, and re-roll hit rolls of 1. Do those benefits both sound familiar? And that battalion costs 160 pts.

Not to mention our allies list is more stupid limitations. I can't even ally with freeguild, despite in the fluff them being our most common ally.

I am frankly quite disappointed with it overall.

Kroaks command ability isnt very useful since you cant reroll turn order rolls any more. You can bring another slann as your general and dedicated summoner.

The slann constellation is another +1 to casting and you can take either reroll cast1 trait to make him a very reliable summoner, or give him the trait that lets him cast the skink spells so he has more utility after you finish summoning your army

Summoning the army is a great way to keep your deployments down and react to whatever your opponent is bringing. One of the weaknesses of the Kroak list is that you had to spend all your spells and didn't have a lot of room for summoning units. Seraphon are a great toolbox army and being able to summon in counters to protect Kroak is going to make the list more powerful... and it's easy to summon when you have +2 to cast (constellation + astrolith) and reroll 1s from the command trait.

Enemy brought a lot of 3+ saves? Salamanders can punch through that. Mass infantry? Razordons can chew through it. High rend? Bastiladon. Fast army? Terradons. Artillery? Chameleon Skinks. Lots of small units? Bastiladon with sneks.

Also slann + kroak is SEVEN unbinds from anywhere on the board. That's just 10/10 trolling right there
