Can fae have children through marriage? Or are they born through nature itself?

similar to their whimsical nature, true boons granted by fae can have no drawbacks whatsoever.

Depends on the setting, probably. The closest things in my setting are capable of functional working relationships with mortals, but you could argue that's because they're also much like animistic spirits or minor pagan gods; there are shamans and priests who understand them well enough to negotiate with them intelligently, or can even command them with clever sorcery.

But remember to understand the deal before you make it.

It's like niggers being thrown out by the bank. They made the deal with the bank and did not read it so fuck them.
The same is with genies, devils and fae, only difference is that deal is harder to understand. But that is why you sign the deal with bank with lawyer and with mystical creatures with certified arcanist as a help.

Just the thread I needed. My party was in the Feywild and made a pact with a Green Hag. They were shrunk to the size of dolls, and the deal was that the Hag would return them back to size if they helped her reach a nearby portal to the Material Plane.
Now, the players were talking about backstabbing her just before passing through the portal. What consequences can they suffer if they break a pact with a Fey in such a way?
>>
>>55021043
that would look a bit nicer if the arms were a bit thicker
>>
>>55022996
They stay small unless they can find someone powerful enough to remove that high level curse.
Pretty easy one there
>>
>>55023021
Nah, they were returned to their normal size already. The Hag needs them to traverse some caves of the Feydark safely.

>>
>>55023081
Oh then they fulfilled the terms of their agreement.
No penalty
>>
>>55023146
If they kill her before helping her pass the portal (that is, before arriving in the Material Plane) then they would be breaking the contract. I wasn't clear in my original wording.
>>
>>55023182
They've already *helped*
>>
>>55023182
In that case, I'd make them small again
Or make their weapons and spells pass through her harmlessly until they reach the prime plane
>>
>>55023182
Also, the hag wouldn't have made them big until the entire deal had been rectified imho
>>
>>55023213
Yeah I guess it can be taken that way. We'll see when it is they decide to betray her.

>>55023241
You're right, but how would you have handled it then? I mean, in that case, then she couldn't have used their help in combat.
>>
>>55022996
>>55023182
By the wording "if they helped her reach a nearby portal to the Material Plane" she doesn't actually have to pass through the portal. She just has to reach it.

Now you could argue about the definition of "reach," but as far as I care the party fulfilled their obligation by escorting her to the portal. If something happens to her before she passes through it, that's not their problem.

If you really want to be an asshole about it, just throw her corpse through the portal afterwards.
>>

>>
>trying to dick over a fey

Just be on your way, what's the point of risking even more shit
>>
>>55023258
I guess im just not grasping the timeline here.
The mere fact that the players escorted her should have been enough to reach the portal unimpeded because faewild bullshit, but if she had to unshrink them to help her in combat, she broke the contract herself.
They shoudnt be bound by it any longer.
>>
>>55023328
Not really, she fulfilled her end of the bargain, now it's their turn. Since it's enforced by the plane itself then they better do it.

If the deal was that she would return them to normal after she helped them, then she violated the terms of the deal by turning then normal before that, this rendering their obligation to help void.
>>
>>55022901
>It's like niggers being thrown out by the bank. They made the deal with the bank and did not read it so fuck them.
Huh. That really does put things in perspective: I think I'd rather make a deal with the fae than Wells Fargo. I could list a lot of points in favor of the fae (they're at least willing to treat you as whole sophonts rather than assets, being turned into a doll is probably more fun than irreparable financial ruin, the fae don't have large teams of people looking for ways to screw you over more effectively), but the main advantage of dealing with the fae is that they're actually bound by the terms of their contracts, while banks, as the robosigning scandal illustrated, are not.

>>55022979
That would be awesome. So many adventurers need contract law! Dealing with dragons, with kings who make rather expansive claims regarding rewards for rescued princesses, with suspiciously convenient offers from strange entities summoned from distant planes-- or just agreeing on how to split up the loot.
>>
>>55023576
Are you autistic or illiterate? Clearly the deal wasn't that she'd return them to normal AFTER they helped her, but ON THE CONDITION that they helped her.
>>
>>55023362
You don't blackmail someone with evidence and immediately destroy the evidence as soon as they agree to help you. Just accept that the Hag doesn't know how to properly make a contract and have the fey laugh at her corpse.
>>
>>55024008
If the evidence is provided to you by the plane itself then it doesn't really matter. If anything, it makes the mortals, ignorant to the workings of the Feywild, more prone to fuck up.
>>
>>55023993
Ah then they really wouldn't have broken the contract as the players would have helped her reach a nearby portal to the material plane before backstabbing her therefore completing their end of the contract.
>>
>>55020891
Implying that fae don't reproduce solely from raping unsuspecting humans
>>
>>55020093

no, their hands are usually too smol to properly shuffle the deck prior to dealing.
>>
>>55024041
I was using evidence as a comparison. I meant they have no reason to still be loyal to the Hag when she just removes the curse right out of the box. Why are you asking us what consequences they could suffer when you seem to be much more knowledgeable about the Feywild in your setting?
>>
>>55024008
This.
The dm fucked up and now has to live with his dumb choices.
The hag was an idiot and deserves to be purged.

And can we discuss how fucked up it is that a party at level 3 is even in the fey wilds?

Ive never sent a party there at any less than level 7. Thats just cruel.
>>
>>55024203

>>55024226

Reminder that fae are less natural than humans.

Animals grow old, grow tired, grow hungry, grow thirsty, fall ill, and die.
Humans, being animals, do all of these things.
The fae do NONE of these things, save for the last - and only when struck down with hostile intent.

Fae have no natural predators. Fae do not so much have 'prey' as 'playthings.'

They are not of the natural world.

This is not actually true, although it's effectively true.
Faye are are like a rushing river thrashing through jagged, razor-sharp rocks.
Interacting with them on any level is dangerous and pointless to the extreme.
Should you find yourself forced to interact against your will, tuck in, protect your vitals, and hope you survive.
But you don't call the river Evil, you just stay clear of it.

I watched it with my best friend and afterwards he said that he figured the drunken wake was them getting through their grief and that was the end of it.
He was totally surprised by the ending.
I told him he was an idiot:
Gypsies are known for excessive violence, ignoring societies rules and morals, and not forgiving even mild slights from outsiders.

You don't tug on Superman's cape; You don't spit into the wind; You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger; You don't mess around with Jim; And you sure as hell don't burn a gypsy's mother alive.

I think, depending on the magical tradition, that might save or it might just deny you your warning of the nature of the curse. Personally I wouldn't go in for the risk of the whole endeavor but you do you.

Even worse, they can 'help' her without her ever actually 'reaching' the portal.
They can just help her for a bit, then suddenly (but inevitably) betray her... and be ok, the fey played herself with her own pact.

Depends on the setting.

Seriously though, fae in my setting, aside from the obviously evil ones, may be mischievous. However, they're sworn to uphold their ends of a deal. If they made a promise, they will keep their words. They know if they're known to be untrustworthy, everybody will just start ignoring them forevermore, which will just fuck them over.

Folks like you have been around for a while. It should be noted that the gypsies are still here, and the folks are all dead

>>
>>55050304
Give them proper housing and legitimate employment.
Then they won't be murderhobos.
>>
>>55050304
Make concequences for their actions. They attack somebody? Guards arrest them. They kill somebody? Guards kill them. No revives, they have to make a new lvl 1 character from scratch.

I don't care if your char is lvl 14 or 15, if he runs around stabbing villagers he gets killed by a group of law-abiding lvl 20 NPCs.
>>

>I'm a gay DM the post

I don't know about Kappas, but with Fae you could just have them teleport, or turn their sword into a feather or some weird shit.
>>
I've never understood how people portray fey.

People usually run them as chaotic tricksters,

But then hold them accountable to faerie law and contracts.

To me, I find the law part more interesting. I run fey as less gypsies and more as lawful eldritch terrors of nature. They follow laws older than mankind, and that is what makes them such assholes. If their law says to punish any slight, they are physically unable to break that law just as simply as water has to run downstream.
>>
>>55044986
They aren't killing anyone dead when they've got a cock in their mouth.

"Have you ever crossed the road, and looked the wrong way? A car's nearly on you? So what do you do? Something very silly. You freeze. Your life doesn't flash before you, 'cause you're too fuckin' scared to think - you just freeze and pull a stupid face. But the pikey didn't. Why? Because he had plans of running the car over." - Turkish

See, that's what I'm talking about. Why are fey law abiding nature spirits, and yet everything they do is chaotic and randumb. The feywilds shouldn't be this mystical topsy-turvy Alice in Wonderland. It should be pure nature unbound, untouched by man.

Imagine going to the feywilde is like being a dog with a new owner. For years and years you had one set of rules (barking once is okay but twice is not, you can go on the couch but not on the bed, if you fetch the ball you get a treat) but now the new house has new rules (barking is NEVER okay, you can go on the bed, you have to jump or crawl for a treat instead of retrieve). The world is mostly the same but suddenly you don't really understand one or two of the core rules anymore.

If the new owner wanted, he could make you wear a stupid dog shirt but what are you going to do about it? He could choose to whelp you with a hunting stud from another kennel. You can't understand whats happening in the new normal but if you spend enough time there you could learn the rules.

The way I see it it's not that they don't follow laws, it's that their laws are so different from ours that they appear to be arbitrary and nonsensical.

They're only "chaotic and randumb" because regular people used to regular laws and regular physics don't see the underlying patterns. Why do they invite one visitor for tea and biscuits while the next visitor gets strung up by his toes and slowly flayed alive? It's not because they're random, it's because the second one did something wrong, which might be something so minute, insignificant, or even outside the poor bastard's control that an outside observer won't even realize there was any significant difference to begin with. And this concept plays out on all levels.

Why does a certain waterfall run upwards in the Feywild? It's not because of random bullshit, it's because our laws of gravity don't apply the same way and there's something else entirely that determines which way water flows. Nature is just as "lawful" as it is elsewhere, it just follows a set of laws that occasionally seems like such bullshit to us that it's hard to see the difference with pure chaos.

For all practical intents and purposes interacting with them is the same as interacting with a force of pure chaos, because it's unlikely that you'll live long enough to figure out the details of their byzantine system of laws and customs, but that doesn't mean they actually ARE chaotic.
