My initial thought was that this was arguing in favor of 4E, but the 4E mummy has very few combat options and is mostly just a tanky brute that swings a mace around. But from what I've seen and heard, that's every monster in the two first MMs.
>>
>>55019460
i mean that was kind of the point of 4e. it was suppose to make things more simple to set up. Sure they could have doubled the 4e abilities by just making them like certain spells, but that goes against the whole point. I mean its just listing the descriptions of the spells for the other two. It reminds me of trying to get that 5 page min for an essay or something.

Mummy Lord: Super duper strongest undead mummy that curses people. All 3 hit those for the stats at least.
>>
>>55019624
This statblock comes from the first monster manual so it's pretty bad compared to what we find in the third one

That said, you can see in the name mine that this statblock is for a Mummy that was a human cleric in its lifetime
If you want to expend its abilities, just open the Cleric spell list and pick some of them
If you instead wanted it to be some other class, you can change its weapon and/or check another spell list
Then, you add other monsters with it, you can't have a controller, even an elite one, fight alone
Lastly, don't forget to make the battlefield interesting, with traps and obstacles

>>55019648
Honestly, to me, this one feels more like a MOSTLY opinion neutral comparison that just lays out the rules. In a vacuum, on this very board, I've seen people think this was an argument for 4e, because it's the most compact and easy to use, I've seen people think it was an argument for 3e because it has the most, and most threatening, options for such an dangerous and iconic monster, and I've also seen people think it was an argument for 5e because it's a happy medium between the three. I think people see what they want to see in that pair of pics based on what edition they already prefer.
>>
>>55019761
>I think people see what they want to see in that pair of pics based on what edition they already prefer.
Which is ironic, in the sense that that comparison could be great for helping a GM understand what each system is like to run, and decide which of them fits their style of GMing.

That is the point.

The irony is people missing that point and making it into an argument.

That being under the modern definition of irony, meaning "anything that sucks in a way that turns your own efforts or ideas back on you" rather than the technically correct definition meaning "the use of words expressing something counter to their literal intention."

I think a large part of why they turned to shit was because people no longer Drew (ayyyy) for them. Which meant loooooong walls of text, stealing art from various sources with no coherence between styles and that didn't represent the scene happening at all, and plots that got way too fucking convoluted.
>>
>>55030366
It's more just that they became "popular" and people without talent started trying their hand at them. Then some of the talentless hacks managed to keep an audience, and that crippled the reputation of the good ones.

I think that's fine since you would get those abilities over the course of 30 levels and not learn it all up front whereas with a Mummy Lord you have to know everything up from as the DM.

But i'm a lurkfag I dunno.
>>
>>55032817
The DM would have 12+ levels to learn too, by that logic.
>>
>>55032919
Well I'm assuming the players are starting at level 1 and have gotten up to the CR for the mummy lord to fight it where the DM plays it for the first time.

Situation: The players get onto a boat for not!Egypt because idle conversation in the tavern convinced them there is gold there. The GM hasn't done anything with undead yet, but fuck it why not put a mummy in the next session.

The 4e GM has to learn a small set of rules and conditions that are universally applied to every monster; if he already knows those, then he just needs the less-than-a-page statblock that says which specific bits happen.

The 3e and 5e GMs both need to learn the specific rules for undead, and the 3e guy also has to learn the specific rules for mummies, both need rules for the summoned creatures and to know all the many spells (which includes rarities like Insect Plague).

If you set it so the GMs know all about undead and mummies, it still means that the 3e and 5e guys have to put in more work to get the same result, or at least have a couple of dozen pagemarkers sticking out the PHB and MM to keep track of all the little pieces and abilities it has access to. It cuts both ways in the sense that the GMs might already know this, but the cut is pretty shallow because the entire point of 4e is that you learn a few simple things and combine them in different ways, and 3e/5e is that everything has it's own special way of doing things, while also combining a much larger list of things.

>>
The familiar hissing of servos being powered up after decades of idleness filled the echoing sarcophagus he was trying to rest in. As his senses engaged, once more allowing him to see and hear the outside world, the familiar chanting filled his near-dead ears once more.
"Ah, dammit", he thought, "it's that time of the century again".
The language of the Space Wolves' rune priests was a harsh, guttural dialect appropriate for harsh people with excesses of phlegm, and if this lot were like the last lot, that was an accurate description.
Oh well, time to put on the show.
He cleared his throat and prepared his deep, tired voice for use once more. After all, if he made it seem like he was slowly losing his grip on reality, they might let him sleep longer.
"WHO AWAKENS BJORN?" he spoke into the microphone, letting the vox casters on the Dreadnought echo it out into the surrounding room. He could already see who was awakening him - the little gimp with the wolf-pubes for a beard - but he had to follow the ritual, make it look all authentic or they would start asking questions.
"Oh mighty Bjorn, the Fell-Handed-" ahh shit, he hated that nickname, "we awaken thee to help us remember the past, the forgotten and the sacrificed, those who embody the spirit of the Wolf."
Spirit of the Wolf? That bollocks was new. Normally they went on about the spirit of the warrior and shit.
"YOU WISH TO HEAR THE TALES AGAIN, DO YOU?" he recited, having said this shit at least half a dozen times in the past.
"Yes, oh Venerable one, please, tell us." The pube-faced tard and the collection of ugly dipshits behind him bowed in supplication. He really, REALLY hated having to tell all these tales. Imagine being asleep, and only being woken up every few hours to tell stories, then being put back to sleep. That was his fate, and he was starting to get sick of it. And they always wanted to hear about fucking Leman Russ, too. Woe betide any fucker stupid enough to ask about Leman Russ.

In my experience it was the millennials who discovered this site during late high-school or early college, during the "early days," and us old grognards who went to high-school and college before such things as optimization boards, and when the DM was determined by who owned an actual copy of the DMG (because PDF downloads were either not a thing or much harder to find) and who eventually teched-up and discovered /tg/ more recently, but that's just my anecdotal experience.

Yes yes, Millenial generation technically began in 83 or something. However the typical "millenial" is a late 90's born shithead.

A: the time you arrived HERE is not necessarily indicative of the time you were born. Especially in the case of /tg/ there are a number of later arrivals who are old pre WoTC-era grognards.

B: It could also be indicative of the last time your hard-drive suffered disk-to-swiss-cheese-and-casing-to-brick syndrome. For example I started coming to the image-boards in 2006, but I also pirate a lot of game books and watch a lot of porn, so every few years my hard-drive inevitably shits the bed, and the most recent time that happened without me saving everything in-time was 2012

Explanation for a (relatively) newfag?
>>
>>55039018
Warhammer Wednesdays was a thing on /b/ before /tg/ became a board, when anons would talk about Warhammer and post Warhammer memes. It was initially formed as a response to Furry Friday, to deny the furfags dominating another day on /b/.
>>
>>55039018
It's just a fucking ork duckroll with some meme shit slapped on. What's to explain?
>>
>>55038675
/tg/ was made as a containment board for /b/tards to talk about Warhammer.

Mostly, anyway, it was also because D&D threads didn't really make logical sense as part of /co/, but it's not like that was the reason moot cared.

So the old pictures, particularly the ones by B&HAMMER that get reposted all the time, are fusions of warhammer and /b/ memes that were current (or only somewhat old) at the time. His stuff stands out as particularly representative of that age since he didn't really do any more of those after the board was made. Last I heard he had gone to tgchan and was drawing shit there, but that was half a decade ago or something.

Do we consider Angry Marines more /tg/ or more /v/?
>>
>>55039321
>/tg/ was made as a containment board for /b/tards to talk about Warhammer.

This is a lie made up by 40k fans with more ego than sense. They have zero proof of their claims, and somehow think weekly threads in /b/ were more important than the daily D&D threads in /v/ and /co/, or the general interest in other games.

/tg/ was made for traditional games, and you really need to stop trying to put 40k on some special pedestal.
>>
>>55039848
>zero proof
This is like saying we have zero proof that the Iraq war happened except that people say it did. If you weren't there, the past can only be determined by shit like that, and for people who were there, being told there's no proof is pointless.

>you really need to stop trying to put 40k on some special pedestal
So you think it was a coincidence that the board was like 90% 40k prior to this decade?
>>
>>55039895
No, it's saying that if you are making an absurd claim, you need to provide some evidence to support it.

My claim is that /tg/ was made for traditional games. That's why it's called /tg/, and there's no reason to pretend one game is responsible for its creation when there were several games that contributed to the decision to make this board.

You, on the other hand, want to pretend that a few threads a week on the shitposting board were somehow important enough to get a containment board in a time before containment boards were made. It's not called /40k/, 40k has never actually been bannned from the rest of the site, and there's really no evidence to support your claim aside from inflated egos.

>So you think it was a coincidence that the board was like 90% 40k prior to this decade?

This is a bold faced lie. Even 40% would be a stretch, and it's generally competed with D&D for the top spot in /tg/'s early years and now also contends with MTG.

Remember me saying something about inflated egos not counting as evidence?

>This is a bold faced lie
It's hyperbole, which is not the same thing. That said, I don't think it dipped below half of the on-topic threads for several years at least.

>Remember me saying something about inflated egos not counting as evidence?
No actually, and it doesn't seem to be in the quote chain. Which I suppose is good, because that would itself be a tremendously faggy and self-important thing to say.
>>
>>55040032

I was there, so please, don't try to act like you can rewrite history just to serve your own ego.

>Not only are neither of these what I said, they're not even mutually exclusive claims.

Yes, yes they are. Saying "/tg/ was made as a containment board for 40k" is trying to claim that it's primary purpose and reason for creation was something that it never was or did, considering that 40k has never been popular enough to need its own containment board, it's never been banned from the rest of the site, and there are other games that are of equal or even greater popularity than 40k. So please, get over yourself. We're not talking about Pokemon here.

>It's hyperbole, which is not the same thing.

You mean you were called out, and now want to use a euphemism for lying because you don't like calling things what they are.
If your entire argument relies on hyperbole, you don't have an argument.

Now, unless you have some measure of proof to your claim that a handful of threads in /b/ were anything more than an ignorable trickle once a week, you're going to need something like moot admitting to your claim, or some other evidence that would diminish all the evidence that clearly indicates that this board was not made as a containment board for 40k.

>No, dude. "Was created to contain 40k" is not the same as "was only created to contain 40k" and neither is the same as "only 40k should be on the board".

There's still no evidence of your claim. None. 40k hasn't even been contained by /tg/, and there's no special mention of it anywhere, and someone could even claim that moot had absolutely no knowledge of WW and you would have absolutely no evidence to dismiss that claim. While moot may have noticed 40k spam in /b/, there were plenty of other considerations to make, like where to put all the D&D threads that were in /co/ and whether they belonged on /v/ or not.

And yes, politics were pushed into /pol/ and restricted from the rest of the site in all other boards except the shitposting boards, and /trash/ is literally for threads banned from the rest of this site. Are you genuinely an idiot?

And, for fuck's sake, your "proof" is literally you just saying "I don't have any proof except for the exaggerations of 40k fans being extrapolated to unbelievable levels."

So please, provide some proof. People can provide plenty of proof the Iraq War happened, including mountains of documents and physical evidence and video tapes and photographs.

All you have is demanding people to respect hyperbole and lies from a group that exaggerates their importance.

Oh, then you'd have some measure of proof, right? A scrap of a sign, something other than 40k fans repeating a myth built from nothing but them exaggerating their own importance?

C'mon. You know what "explicitly" means. Show me.

Because, frankly, there isn't even substantial vague evidence of your claims, or really any evidence at all that moot was even aware of WW. We can guess that he was aware of those threads, but any more than that is a leap of faith that most people aren't going to take just because the 40k fandom likes to stroke their egos despite all the evidence that conflicts with their claims (40k never actually being contained, it being named /tg/ rather than /40k/, /40k/ actually not being as popular as 40k fans might think, etc.).

Think about what you're asking. You expect there to be some kind of fucking news article in USA Today about the motivation behind the formation of /tg/? There's not even going to be a newspost in 4chan's news blog.

You're providing your side of the argument based solely on your personal memories of something that happened half a decade ago, then when someone else does the same you're screeching and demanding a fucking Wall Street Journal article to back up their claims.

I was there too, and I recall 40K and DnD taking up the vast majority of space on /tg/ and their prevalence on other boards being the major (but not the only!) reason for /tg/'s creation. No I don't have a cut-out article from The Guardian with a quote from Tony Blair to corroborate my memories and neither do you.

So you'll just have to live with being the only person alive who believes the inaccurate memories you've forged for yourself. Like a madman you'll dash from house to house, asking people if they recall a thing that didn't happen, a world that never existed. They'll look upon you with a mixture of pity and horror, seeing the fragility of the human mind and it will remind them to hug their body pillows and call their mothers (to ask for more money). You'll scream in the streets, 'IT WASN'T JUST 40K' and a hundred window shutters will close on you for fear of somehow catching your madness from simply looking at you.

The city guard will come for you, but your words of insanity will drive them to pull their heads from their bodies. The mayor, in desperation, puts the word out: A bounty on you, for any willing party of adventurers. It's not much, the town is not rich, but enough perhaps to attract the attention of a lower-medium level party to deal with the madness-spouting hobo who's taken residence in the town.

Who will answer the call? Check-in now!
(This adventure is appropriate for parties lvl4-8)

>I was there too, and I recall 40K and DnD taking up the vast majority of space on /tg/ and their prevalence on other boards being the major (but not the only!) reason for /tg/'s creation.

This is a VERY different statement than "/tg/ was made as a containment board for 40k."
Your statement implies that D&D played a large role, and that other games were taken into consideration as well. And, yet, even your far more half-hearted statement still can't be verified as to whether D&D and 40k were the "major" reasons for its creation, so it remains speculation. Do you not understand this? That people speculating does not equal proof, no matter how much you believe it?

When you take into account that /tg/ was never a containment board for anything except arguably quests, the statement "/tg/ was made as a containment board for 40k" is basically pure, unadulterated bullshit.

So, please, your cringe-inducing theatrics are irrelevant. Your logic? Absent.

The only statement that can be verified is that /tg/ was made as a board for traditional games, and that there are some games that are more popular than others. Did WW play a part in /tg/'s creation? It might have, but to exaggerate its importance to the point where it was the singluar or really even a major impetus for its creation is really just 40k fans rewriting history to make themselves seem far more important than they actually were. Unless you have some measure of proof supporting your statements, all you have are exaggerations and even simple lies.

>"tg was made so dnd and warhammer would stop shitting up other boards" narrative

That's not what we're talking about here.

We're talking about the old lie of "/tg/ was made as a 40k containment board" or "WW is the main reason we have /tg/."

These are unsubstantiated lies that are oft repeated, with plenty of contradicting evidence, that even you can agree with to the point where you felt it necessary to include D&D in your revision of the old lie.

As an oldfag, I see no reason to pretend that the lies of a few people are worth repeating, especially when they have nothing even resembling proof of their claims. Warhammer Wednesday may have been a big deal for them, but that's hardly the case for the majority of oldfags, as WW was simply a small, once-a-week splash in /b/ that they hope to give legendary status simply by hoping no one actually remembers it as it was.

Even if you want to act like their exaggerations of their own importance should be valued, their claims of what the origin of /tg/ is remains unsubstantiated, and is therefor nothing more than speculation.

Take a look at this census.
>>55058788

It may have been a few years after the creation of /tg/, but pay attention to how while 40k may have been a major player, it's by no means even near a majority and not even the most popular brand. If anything, D&D fans have a greater claim to being the primary impetus for /tg/, but they have enough sense not to bother making such a claim.

Rather than senselessly accepting the exaggerations of a few fans of one game who feel undue importance, I'd rather force them to either provide some proof of their claims. Until that proof emerges, we're going to have to just accept that /tg/ was simply made with all traditional games in mind.

>>55061103

And, please. Enough with your "commonly accepted truth" bullshit. If that's your substitute for convincing evidence, consider yourself without any argument beyond "Please believe old lies."
>>
>>55061423
>the only argument I've made is that 40k and dnd were the reason the board was made
>links to census taken years after the board was made that shows 40k and dnd were the most played games

What is this supposed to convince me of? That I was right when I said that WW and dnd were the reason tg was made?

Or are you really just that angry that moot spent most of his time on /b/ and the WW vs Furries """"rivalry"""" is likely to be his only interaction with the /tg/ "subculture"?

If there is not a narrative widely accepted enough to supplant the narrative already widely accepted why in the world would I just accept some contrarian saying shit that's just as likely to be made up as the things they are saying is made up?

Also, the rest of your post is basically just unsubstantiated exaggerations.

>If there is not a narrative widely accepted enough

The only narrative accepted is the official one. /tg/ was made for traditional games, with no official reason given. EVERYTHING ELSE IS SPECULATION.

Ah yes, I forgot that boards just spontaneously sprang forth from the ether and it did not require sufficient support for the board to be created. The evidence that was cited shows many other games as well. Many, many other games. And, please, don't drag D&D into this. This is about the old claim about WW being the main reason for /tg/, of which there is not a shred of supporting evidence for that claim.

If that's the end of this discussion, fine. I don't need to hear from your own lips that the old lie is an empty exaggeration crafted by egotistical 40k fans, because your inability to provide any evidence to contradict that is sufficient.

Is there a story about a dm trying to kill his players for about 200+ sessions?

I'm pretty sure /tg/ was made, or at least conceptualized, because some fat chick asked about a traditional games board during one of the Otakon panels.
