It always amazes me the context that gets missed in the Magnus vs Russ debates but I think its their duel that is understood the least. Why is Russ beating Magnus considered a great feat for one thing?

Russ is often talked up as one of the better combatants amongst his brothers. Magnus however? No not really. Then there's the fact that Russ wanted to fight Magnus whereas Magnus didn't at all. In fact the only reason he did fight was because at the last minute he decided to save his sons. Which is another things Russ was 100% focused on the fight whilst Magnus was holding off the entire remaining army attacking Tizca. Not an easy task with the Sister of Silence scattered around him.

As for the final duel itself Russ's wolves interfering along with Russ only winning because of a '''''lucky''''' strike really shows how close this fight was. But should it have been? Russ had everything in his favour, an enemy that wasnt as driven or focused as him, help from outside factors and in the end it still came down to Tzeentch interfering? Why is this considered a great showing from Russ? If anything it truly shows how outclassed he was by someone no-one thinks that highly of when comparing the Primarchs.

Finally one thing that is always ignored is that Magnus shattered himself to save his legion after all of the above. Instead of using his power and that of Tzeentch to destroy he still used it to save instead. Magnus was loyal and still refused to act against the emperor willingly as his final words show.

I'm not actually a space wolf player. I'm considering playing Dark Angles so I've been reading their lore. The fight was for all intents and purposes over. Russ was in his ass laughing instead of getting back up to keep fighting, and the Lion socked him across the Jaw and then huffed off in a pout. Admittedly he has a good reason to be pissed at Russ, and the whole thing was Russ's fault, but this in no way shows that the Lion is stronger or better than Russ they faught evenly for a significant period of time. Magnus will and should never roll on telepathy since that power set is devoid of D spells. Biomancy gets the best choice, but he will not likely roll elsewhere since the primaris power for Biomancy works great with him. In an actual game, the telepathy needs a secondary caster to manifest and then it's still 50/50

The problem with Magnus in 30k is that there are so many ways to make him better than he already is. Deepstriking re-reoll invuns of 1 surrounded by two sehkmet squads. All you seem to care about is that if you place the two models next to each other with no support and no powers then Russ comes out on top. Well k but thats never happening in a game.
