How does man oppose nature, and the fey?

The personifications of human vices, coupled with the unrelenting forces of the world we reside in...how do you fight an ocean? A forest? The wind?

Is it the nature of man to seek progress, industry, invention? Do we fall from the path of the natural world? Are we not son's and daughters of the earth?
>>
>>55007011
Fuck no, fey are gay as shit and don't even use the toilet.
Torch the forests, salt the plains, kill the earth, evaporate the oceans, reject the gods, live in highly technologically advanced space colonies. Just a cluster around the sun would support trillions of people in comfort.
>>
>>55007011
>Do we fall from the path of the natural world?

Common fallacy for equating nature and good.
I like anti-biotics, life expectancy over 30 years, a small infant mortality rate, smaller occurances of back-breaking labor and not shitting in my drinking water.
>>
>>55007011

one tree at a time

So then
Assuming a high medieval tech level (pre rifled muskets, plate puke and cannons) how does one oppose the enemy?

Tame every wild? Yoke every beast? Put to heel all who suffer the touch of iron?
>>
I always make sure "nature" is not a beatable concept in my settings. Makes le ebin HFY XD players really upset.
>>
>>55007304
Clear the forests, replace with small thin easily farmed trees for production.
Animals are either tamed or killed on sight.
Fish the oceans barren of prey.
Iron is your friend.

>smaller occurances of back-breaking labor

technically the back-breaking labour was a result of civilization. farming had its advantages but it was a lot more work than hunter-gathering.

also this question is basically kamigawa, so start there.
>>
>>55007246
It's also a fallacy for implying that humans using their natural intelligence to satisfy their natural desires is somehow magically unnatural.
>>
>>55007418
So while the fey might argue "man has fallen from the true path" we can argue bath that the path we have taken is the one fated to us, as we simply follow it?
>>
>>55007377
>not wanting to live in India is HFY
>>
>>55007441
Sure. Whether either of those claims is completely true is debatable, but it is definitely something that can reasonably be argued for.
>>
>>55007458
You've never been in an HFY thread, have you? Shit like
>We killed our Mother Earth, and nursed ourselves on the blood from her teats
is incredibly common wank material.
>>
>>55007458
Bad example, Anon. Majority of the filth plaguing India is man-produced. The country would get more hospitable if left entirely to nature.
>>
>>55007512
Mother earth is overrated once you get to the level of making space colonies.
>>
Civilization makes most men become hilariously weak and vulnerable, like cattle. "Nature" as an antagonistic force already won.
>>
>>55007553
then you have to deal with grandmother space

it's mothers all the way up
>>
>>55007621
And turtles all the way down?
>>
>>55007011
It all depends on how you view things.

Are fertile fields and the herd animals not the gifts of mother earth? Why must progress be the enemy of nature, rather than her gift.

If nature is an enemy, then you fight it without mercy. Harness the winds to work your mills, build a wall of stone to drive back the raging tides. Not because it is right, or because it is wrong; not because it is our destiny, or or a sign of our greatness, but because that is the way of the world.
>>
>>55007621
Grandmother space is senile and by the time she has her period it's been millennia rather than years.
>>
>>55007011

>>
Lines of salt and cold iron.
>>
>>55007011
You can't oppose nature, because it's not something that is 'on' a 'side' or has any real agency. 'Nature' itself is just a series of processes.

An ancient forest is natural, but so is the volcano that destroys it in a single night.

If anything, the fey are less natural than humans. They don't reproduce in any normal way, they react to oaths and iron and salt in ways no living creature should, and, unless destroyed by a creature with hostile intent? They fail to do the most natural thing any creature can do. Without enemies, they do not DIE.

Good. Nature produces quite a few of them.
>life expectancy over 30 years
Long as you survive infacy, nothing to worry about.
>a small infant mortality rate
This is legit.
>smaller occurances of back-breaking labor
Said labor was performed for a purpose, as opposed to the many instances of light labor in the modern world that serve no purpose other than to be self-sustaining.
>not shitting in my drinking water
And now you went full retard.
>>
>>55007458
Third of India is an useless desert, because they heard goats there, because goats eat desert shrubs. Because goats ate desert shrubs, there is no shrubbery growing, so nothing retains soil and water in place.
In places where goat herding was forbidden, local ecosystem turned into hospitable and able to support more productive forms of agriculture and industry within 25 years.

Another third is overwatered and turns into a salty swamp unable to sustain anything at all, because bunch of assholes don't have to pay for the water in irrigation, so they waste shitload of water by not even bothering to ration it at all.
Which helps the nearby desert to encrouch them.

And this is just the very tip of the iceberg called "idiots destroying their own living space"

Statically speaking the majority of the world lives with access to anti-biotics, has a life expectancy over 30 years, a small infant mortality rate, smaller occurances of back-breaking labor compared to the past.

Historically speaking there was never a better time than today.

You say while wielding your knife and chucking your spear. Listen here, dipshit: if you feel like strangling a rabid wolf with your bare hands then be my fucking guest. Nature is not something beautiful and to be revered, that's cultivated nature upheld and made beautiful by man. Nature is cold, merciless chaos. It is putrid, it is disgusting, it is cruel, it is merciless, it is indifferent. Yet the cruelty we found within the natural world can also be found in man. Man rises above the apes and hounds that sniff their own balls by elevating himself above the natural world and restraining his instincts, redirecting him towards what he knows is good rather than letting them loose upon what he feels is good.

Now go have fun with the urethra fish of you 'beautiful' nature, you hippy freakshow.

Generally, we leave them the fuck alone.

The Fey are almost all-powerful in their realm, but the more we expand and change the land, the less interest they have in our world. They LIKE forest glades. They don't particularly care for parking lots.

Advancing to the modern world makes human territory inherently unattractive to them. There is always a small risk that we will gain the attention of a Fey, but it wont last long. Letting them spirit away a few people a year is well worth the price of not having to actually deal with them. Provoking the Fey with open conflict would no be worth the cost even if we won.

Hey says, living in a climate controlled environment having grown up better nourished, healthier, and stronger than anyone living even just 200 years ago could have imagined. From the safety of his stable shelter that keeps out any predator that doesn't walk on two legs, while typing at the keyboard of his machine that lets him communicate, learn, and order food or supplies from perfect safety.

Did you know iodine deficiency fucks you right the hell up with debilitating illnesses, like how scurvy is for citrus? Do you even know where you would get iodine in the wild to keep yourself healthy? No, because you grew up in a world were we add iodine to the salt specifically so you never have to worry about that shit. And that's just something that happened in the last century or so.

People who talk shit about civilization don't understand that living without civilization means walking around cold and afraid, never having a safe place to sleep, never having food you can be sure wont make you sick, and never having any allies to make it easier because 'making it easier by working together' is the fucking cornerstone of civilization.
>>
>>55008146
This. The idea that nature is a singular "thing" that must take a side for or against humanity is stupid. All nature is is just the gross oversimplification of the millions of life processes that ensure that life, resources, and energy are able to flow on this planet. Humans may be capable of fucking it up for their own benefit, but literally every other species can as well when not being fucked over by their own selective forces and environment, heck that's the whole mindset behind why invasive species are a problem. Mankind is not some being that acts outside of nature, were just the one that ran out of and overcame our own selective pressures. We're acting in a way that is perfectly natural for our development and adaptation.

Granted, I personally think we should try to take care of nature, as this planet is our home and if we don't learn to take care of this one, then we won't be able to sustain ourselves on other planets and eventually starve ourselves to death (like that one study where wolves on an island died of starvation because they killed all the deer), but that's my personal opinion and is o e based on ethics, which is completely unrelated to the topic at that of the metaphysical nature of Nature

>Le civilization is opposite of nature meme

You do realise that there are for more mutualistic forms of symbiosis than there are parasitic, and that nearly all plants can, will, and often do form mutualistic relationships with microrhyzial fungi, and that plants also use said forms of fungi to form networks capable to sending chemical signals I dictating the presence of disease and other issues to aid in the immune/hormonal production to combat said threats, right?
And that's not even getting into the shit animals due, especially social animals like Prairie Dogs and Rats, the latter of which have been shown to display both empathy and a willingness for self-sacrifice and willing starvation to avoid the death of their non-related compatriots

>>55007011
Because OP, nature is not a singular faction, but various elements fighting over dominance. Fire doesn't give a damn if it destroys every tree and turns the world into an inhospitable burning wasteland, its its job to burn and release energy. Water would think nothing of drowning the forests in order to expand its domain. Man hardly destroys nature compared to how nature fights itself, and that is why it is weak, for it is not united.

Have... have you seen the movie that the picture you chose comes from?
If it wasn't for the main characters, the spirit of the forest would have been eradicated.

As for the philosophical bent, man came from nature, and is a part of nature, therefore all he does is nature as well. The arrogance that industry is somehow separate or against the natural world is silly. If you think what is currently happening is bad, look up what happened when the first oxygen producing plants took over. Life finds a way.

Well "nature" is where we get our water, food and air. It's also where we get our wood and valuable minerals. And space being part of the natural world, it's also where we get our heat and light.

If nature wanted us dead it would let us cut down all the trees, boil the ocean and exterminate the animals. We would ether be forced to leave or die and then the system could start all over again from bacteria somewhere.

Nature is indifferent, it's not cold or viscous or chaotic, it just is. It 's law is that whatever allows a thing to continue will allow the thing to continue. It is the pattern all things in motion take.

We probably got where we are by assuming it was a demon out to get us. So we could take pride in fighting a common enemy with bows and knives, wiping out species dangerous to us.
By this point we have no more meaningful animal enemies aside from each other. But nature keeps rolling along. I think we're upset that it doesn't hate us, we wished it had some kind of scheme to foil but it doesn't. We want to fight the world but the world isn't a meaningful enemy.
