WiP Minotaur. Still need to clean up the highlighting, and pick out some more details. First marine I've painted in almost ten years. Arms and backpack are separate, to make hitting chest easier. Not sure what I want to do with the pauldrons - there are no Minotaur transfer sheets, and my freehanding skill is almost nil.

Excuse the mess in the background, working on some house stuff.

I actually followed Duncan's scheme for Minotaurs verbatim, and it worked out quite nicely. Quick and easy too:
-2 coats Balthasar
-Drybrush Runelord Brass
-Wash Agrax Gloss
-Drybrush Runelord again
-Edge highlight with Stormhost Silver

You could very easily get a squad done quickly.

More heads. Is it weird to use the heads that come with a dreadnought on normal Marines?? Because they're awesome looking... I'm thinking that beefy steel one will be a heavy weapons bro.
>>
>>54997337

The beefy one is really large and too heavy looking, but I've seen people use it. The skull head one is an awesome head and a lot of people use it as a normal head because it has a cool faceplate. It's the exact same size as a normal helmet.
>>
>>54997337
I know the one on the right fits on marines because I put it on one, but I don't know about the one on the left, you might have to scrape a little off the front of the bottom to get it right but other than that it should fit fine.

>>
>>54997458
You're going to have a lot of trouble getting to fit the dread helmets and pretty much any helmet that isn't a DW Vet helmet on those torsos since the collar is in the way. GW specifically designed the helmets in the DW Vet kit to fit on those torsos because the normal ones don't. I tried to put a normal helmet on one of those torsos it didn't fit very well even with a bunch of scraping and chopping.

You can make some pretty tacti-cool rubrics with the termi heads
>>
>>54997543
If you still want to use the dread heads you could try chopping up the torso backs a bit to fit normal marine torso fronts, without the collars, onto them and that should make it easier to fit the heads on.

Greenstuff sculpting 101:

Get some cheap clay sculpting tools. You can get like a dozen tools in a set for like $5 (you might end up only using two of em for most things starting out)

Use water to damp your tools frequently while sculpting.

Careful to avoid fingerprints, and you can polish out fingerprints and fold marks using a damp tool.

Subtractive sculpting is a thing, so if your shapes are a tad blobby you can cut and carve away at them after curing.

You have a lot of visible fold marks and blobby shapes still.

You can reduce the boxyness of the bags by using a bit of greenstuff on the corners to make it a more rounded transition. Then, you can put a THIN indent going along the length of the corner. This will make it look like there's a seam on the inside of the backpack. (the clever grot who sewed this realized that this helps prevent the bag from ripping)

Beginning edge highlighting on the Warpwalker. My hands are kinda shaky today though, so progress is slow. Doesn't help that my ceiling light is starting to dim either

Should I do any kind of markings on his shoulder to denote his old chapter? What kind of homebrew chapter could I do? Maybe something based off of Dark Souls, like something and gold with a wolf or sun as the chapter symbol?
>>
>>54998035
If you're going to go with Dark Souls heraldry then a sun would work, since Gwyn was the god of sunlight and his children and himself represented it. Fire would also work, as it is a strong theme in the game, maybe a dwindling flame or something along those lines.
In terms of color, I would go with a muted tone to represent the decay of the character, another strong theme in Dark Souls.
>>
>>54998107
These are good suggestions. Since Artorias is the wolf knight you could try for a custom wolf sigil, but that's probably too close to, well, you know. Warriors of Sunlight would make for a cool chapter, could probably do a color scheme based off of Solaire (green, white, chrome, big, outstanding heraldry). Not terribly original, but I think it would look cool and be a nice homage.

>>
>>54998107
>>54998161
I'm not too keen on the Solaire inspired colors as it'd look a bit too cartoony on an overall serious model. Besides sunfags are the worst. Darkwraiths 4lyfe

I'm kind of leaning towards gold trim with a flame symbol. Not sure what to do for the pauldron's main color though
>>
>>54998416
Black or a deep blue to contrast the warm glow of the flame. Another theme of Dark Souls is the dichotomy of things in the universe, particularly Dark and Light
>>
>>54998436
Maybe a small golden flame in a black pauldron? Like the small bit of flame with the abyss slowly encroaching around it
>>
>>54998416
That's fair. A darkwraith themed army would be awesome, all black with bright red highlights, red eye orb as the heraldry, and at least one model in the "well what is it?" pose.

Given that Artorias is all chrome, blue, and black, I'll second >>54998436
and go with the dark blue that will fit the character theme and make the flame/sun pop.
>>
>>54998473
That's perfect
>>
>>54998484
>>54998497

Artorias in my army is called the Warpawalker. He's set to be my Chapter champion. Due to fluff reasons, his senses have been dulled by the Warp and is being manipulated by my chaplain, who will actually be Darkwraith themed, to fight for my renegade chapter despite his undying loyalty for the Imperium. It's tragic really, and I love how it ended up

>>
>>54998604
>>54998605
>>54998625
Might not be his name outright but Kaathe is actually his WIP due to the strong connection. Still need to do the chapter master before the chaplain so I've got time to work on something

For those who've been in /yourdudes/ threads, is the Dregs Fatalis, a renegade chapter comprised of survivors, POWs, and deserters guided by a warmongering turbocunt of a warlord. His efforts overseeing parts of the Primaris testing procedure combined with the theft of key machinery and supplies thanks to the chaplain, they ran off and began recruiting/kidnapping to build an army. After vanishing for a while, they recently resurfaced in a massive Space Hulk, which they use to reprocess new marines into primarines with a grudge

The only rule the Dregs follow are answering to certain commanders and to gather stolen/salvaged loot. Other than that, they're free to run rampant, fulfilling their own agendas and generally causing trouble for the Imperium

>>54999153
other then lenses and the vents in the back, i'm wary of having too much orange on it as it contrasts so much with blue, that putting it on any larger area would clash too much. Currently the only other place i can see adding them is the little dot in the tau emblem, or the disc things on the side of the jetpacks.

Vallejo and P3 are vastly superior to the GW paints and cheaper. Over time your going to build a large paint selection honestly bite the bullet and pick up about 10-15 colors you plan to use on your project.

It's pretty amorphous.

It's a staff embedded into the floor with a bit of horror torso tacked on with horror arms and a screamer head?

More like a spawn than a herald...
You'd have been better off greenstuffing a robe over wire armature with the horror arms coming out and a hooded robed head that it covered.
Maybe holding the staff with the two left arms that have closed fists and keep the right arms with the book.

My death guard army wip. Really happy with the progress thus far. Full album in link.

The biggest issue I've encountered this far; army painter spray varnish. ruined a model I worked 15 hours on. Don't risk using this shit. The benefits of using this shit are far outweighed by heartbreak of it going wrong.

Other than rhus; paint tentacles highlighting with "horizontal" stripes. Gives a very realistic fleshy bulging effect. Much better than the purple shit I tried on the first few.

>>55001737
No. Not worth it. Just don't manhandle your models. The extra longevity is outweighed by the risk.

I've sprayed 20 models without an issue but after I ruined a guy last night I vowed never to use it again. Imagine painting one of the best model's you've ever done, then some guy comes along and drybrushes everything white. That's what happened to me last night. Never again.
>>
>>55001762
I think the issue was I sprayed just around sunset and it started getting darker/ colder, so dew started forming, you know how the grass starts getting wet at twilight hours. I left my model outside for the spray to dry.

My model attracted a lot of dew it seems and it caused the spray to go foggy and appear like a heavy white drybrush all over the model. At least this is my theory.

So unless you can always be sure of weather/ humidity and temperature I don't think spraying is worth the risk.
>>
>>55001723
>>55001730
You may be able to save that model; try spraying it with some gloss. If everything goes well, it'll fill in the microscopic pits the matte creates and even the coat back out.

>>
>>55002482

The base coat is when you start blocking in the colours.

The word daddy apparently fucked right out of your heads is primer. And if you want to paint without primer then go ahead, but don't come crying here if half the paintjob has rubbed off after your first game.
>>
>>55002362
Yeah fair enough. My point was that the risk x The cost is greater than the benefits.

Unless you work in a cleanroom with atmospheric control I wouldn't risk it again. If it backfires once that outweighed 1000s of successful varnishings. The expected value is too great for me.

the only definite way to know is to e-stalk the painter of that mini and find his recipe on a painting forum or whatever.
Due to this being a photo, there are dozen of different ways even including your monitor calibrations that may result in best guesses that are all just basically "pulling straws".

You can look at GWs painting guide thingy with the color triads and pic a recipe that you like though.
Unless there is some reason you need a 100% accurate color match that shouldn't be a problem.

Zoggin' Mork I had that exact same idea!
>>
So all the youtubes I've watched about greenstuff are terrible and most either just show "here is how I did this detail" or adding little bits.

How do you full figure with greenstuff? Do you add a little, cure, then keep going (feet, toes, knees, ankles) or do you sculpt some major structure and then add? Legs than torso or all together with a wire frame?

Second my greenstuff is like shitty bubblegum. On all the vids it's more like modeling clay. Did I use it too soon after mixing? Do you let it cure before working with bigger pieces?

Speaking of, what is the actual working time? Google says 1.5 hrs working 24+ to cure. Some of the vids they're mixing up a rice grain sized portion at a time and others they're like bum rushing the modelling like it's superglue drying. What gives?

Any other newb tips (like dip everything in water)?

just have water on standby and dip your fingers / tools in it before touching the green stuff. It should work pretty much like modelling clay. My advise for large sections: Try, if you can, to scaffold some sort of skeleton with bits of sprue, iron wire or toothpicks or whatever you have lying about. It'l make putting on the green stuff much easier.

I always try to guess how much I'm going to use for something and try to mix about that amount before I begin, but I always have leftovers. There are ways to make little press-moulds and base reliefs and such, so if you have any left over try and use it for that.

Maybe give the hair a very slight bluish taint at the base near the head, and then have it flow out into pure white? Or just make the hair a much brighter white? I can't really give any correct answer here since I dont know anything about "grymkin", so I'm just looking at it from the perspective of color theory.

The armour is Ulthuan grey and I did Valleyos Dead White highlights, but it might be not so vissible with that light setup tho.

Thanks for the comments guys since its like the 10th model I painted in my entire life.
As It was a bugger to paint Imperial Fists color scheme due to the intensity of the color depending on the number of layers I had to put, painting Novamarines is sooo much more fun, and the quarter stuff wasnt difficult to paint at all. I just did a few decisive and fast brush strokes and everything went well.

the dark blue shading/outline whatever looks very inconsistent. if it's supposed to be weathered and faded it's too uniform for that. Really it looks like he took his armor into some Tijuana chop shop and then interrupted the lazy mexican who had just stripped the easiest parts.

I like the light blue and gold, it's good work but that dark blue just doesn't work for me, whatever it's supposed to be.

Tools and oil.

I roll it flat using a cup with some rubber bands wrapped around it as spacers, then cut the resulting green pancake into whatever shape I need. My rolling surface is just a bit of plasticard.

I do fine shaping with tools similar to pic related. You don't have to buy expensive, as long as they're steel.

The real secret is to lube up. I get some vegetable oil on a bit of paper towel before wiping down my roller cup, my rolling surface, my tools, basically anything the green stuff will be touching except the model.

It's sticky stuff. use the stick to your advantage.

I was thinking green stuff, but I'm new to green stuff and not sure about how thin you could effectively get the ropes to keep the nets from getting bulky, but I think laying them flat in a grid then draping while semi-cured would give a good effect. While they're flat score them at an angle to simulate rope knurls.

LOL I'm no where near even trying this with greenstuff though so proceed with caution.

Alternatively you could literally tie them out of thread or use those expanding plastic bags if you find a scale that suits. Don't know how those would take paint but it would be a lot less fussy.

Now I gotta think of a way to make 2 burna boys who look more kommando then orks with burnas a nob out of a aobr nob, which means I'd need to do a lot of arm conversions to make it look more dynamic. Sanding really helped the greenstuff as did backpack seems on the edges.

Kitbashed a Kommando for my orks will probably go in with greenstuff to fill in gaps and add more straps where needed.

I'll answer.

Two different detachments usually

Tacti-cool Rubrics and chosen hang with some old metal upgraded guys. Have a painted up LR for them.

Magnus(a DP) and Ahriman hang out with Termis. The swordsman are a 30k unit, might use them in 40k as Possessed.

How do the Elysian grav chutes look on Kasrkin? I really want Harakoni warhawks.
>>
>>55016029
No idea, but I suspect they'd work slightly better on Scions. Kasrkin are metal and monopose, not too good for conversions.

I haven't painted or played since like 6th so I'm super rusty. Is this an acceptable standard for regular tabletop play?
>>
>>55016269
If 10 is table-ready that's a 12.

Golden Demon is a 20, for extra reference.
