The world as we know it is made up of nine vast, transparent domes, each orbiting one another, all revolving around a vast ball of eternal fire. Beyond the domes lies an infinite void, pinpricked with dots of light, signifying countless other worlds an almost infinite distance away.
Mankind has known about the domes since the beginning of time, for at the center of every major civilization is a monolith which dictates the existence of the domes. Not their purpose, just their existence.

The gods will on every 10,000th light cycle(day) send a down flying servant to travel, observe and judge the species who inhabit the world.

Each major civilization tries their best to impress the servants the best they can, though they are never sure what they are being judged on. Either way, the species or societies that most satisfy the servants are rewarded with bountiful seasons, good fortune, and other lucky things.
The dome our story takes place in is filled with "humans," some resembling real-world Euros, West Asians, East Asians, Africans, Polynesians, Americans, and even Abos, but also some resemble dwarves, elves, hobbits, Etc.
All are called Human, but there are different ones in different parts of the world, and each group has it's own unique name, culture, countries, and stereotypes.

Earth monolith is circled by 8 (Still functioning) portals.

While the portals do still function, one must obtain a given portal's key to enter it. The keys are scattered throughout the globe, many in the possession of wealthy or influential families, other lost to time.
Each world is wildly different from each other. One world might be several flat planes stacked on top of each other, another would exist at a uniform 45 degree angle.
