It's a crap beer and pretzels game. Only one small step up from Risk. Play a REAL wargame.

not OP, what alternative do you recommend? I was looking at moral conflict.

I'm a fan of World in Flames myself. A3R is also quite good.

Risk with added complexity, but not the good kind.
Prepare for many hours spent arguing about poorly written rules.

Axis and allies is what risk wants to be when it grows up.
>>54971997
Risk needs better role models in its life.

Pretty fun, just takes a long time for anyone to win unless axis is dumb.

This basically. It's about a half-step up from Risk and belongs in the Short Bus Hall of Fame.
It's popular because it's deliberately dumb. The mechanics are poor and the rules are simplistic while also being poorly written. The figures and box art attract preteens. It's the perfect game for a clueless grandparent to buy a clueless grandkid thinking it will "teach" them something about history.
The same amount of money MeMaw pisses away on A&A would have bought 2, 3 or 4 starter folio games from DG, GMT, MMP, or any number of other wargame publishers. Games that are simple, but not simplistic, have plenty of replay value, and would actually teach Junior something.
Better pay for the little army men instead.
