There's a guy thats going to be running a roll20 game of Reloaded (aka: Savage Worlds version) if you wanna try it.

Other than that, it's the wild west with some cthulhu shit going on, and most of the weird shit is taken from popular fiction you know and, unlike most games, tends to function pretty close to that fiction. It's pulpy all around.

It's wild west, but with supernatural and steampunk elements. It puts a lot of power in the players hands especially if you're harrowed. (So much of a badass you come back from the dead) The system gives you a lot of freedom too, I feel.

Ah, there's my cue. Thanks for quick ad anon.

I am setting up to run Deadlands (Looking like Monday or Wednesday nights burgertime)

The system's great for pulp action.

Setting is anachronistic wild west, with mad science, kung fu masters, and gamble wizards all vying for fortune and glory. Supports anything from Hellblazer-style supernatural mysteries, to hijinx laden wacky steam wagon races across the salt flats of Utah.

I definitely recommend giving one of the core books a read if Westerns, Alternate History, or Pulp Horror are your jams.

Already have 3 signed up, I could run 3 more, but if more sign up, we could work out a rotation.

>there are literally actual photographs, thousands of them.

Honestly, I dislike using actual photo's for characters. Consider it a remnant of online chat play, where everyone keeps using fucking supermodels or Dr. Who as their pictures. Not a strike against you, more of a personal issue for myself because a lot of chat based games have been incredibly shit to the point it's ruined a lot of things for me in other games.

Or the guy who shows up with an elf rogue for D&D and his picture is in the top 5 image results for elf fucking rogue. That said I'd rather any of the above than the worst in char pic I've ever seen, pic related. He had it "commissioned" by a brony on deviantart I think.

This isn't necessarily for deadlands, but does anyone know about the major and distinctive differences between indian tribes popular in westerns? I've been combing for some myself but it's hard to know the fine differences. I want to make a few factions based on indian tribes but I'm not sure what aspects to focus on. I see things like ones that are agriculture centric, hunters/gatherers, nomads who follows buffalo trails, etc. That's the kind of easy to pick out differences I'm interested in. Is there anywhere i can read about this kind of thing in an easy to grasp format?
>>
>>54977490
Also, the other thing is I'm not sure what tribes were the ones westerns tended to focus on, either in media or historically. I know stuff like Navajo but I'm not exactly sure what ones we most associate with the wild west.

Apaches, Comanches - The evil sons of bitches who scalp settlers.

Sioux - Buffalo-hunting mystical honest injuns. Good guys who get screwed over and over.
Dances With Wolves type shit.

Cree - Like the Sioux, but in Canada, so were genocided more politely and apologetically.

These are of course only Hollywood Indians. Real life tribes were incredibly diverse, local, and as complicated as any other group of people trying to find a place for themselves while holding on to their culture in an increasingly hostile world.
>>
>>54977782
I know there's many many different tribes which has made it difficult to try and pin down the most important and and major differences, since I don't want hundreds or whatever different tribes, so I want to focus on the main things that differentiated them. I do want to focus on the "Hollywood Indians" since they're the ones most people will be able to recognize, so I want all the names that people know like Sioux, Apaches, etc. But I do want to make sure I'm not pinning, say, Apaches as the mystic types, or the apaches as the evil warriors. I want to make sure that if I'm boiling down and trivializing the tribes to their main features that I'm at least getting the right stereotypes.

This is a good start and is very much what I was looking for. Is there anywhere I could read up on this kind of thing in an easy to grasp way? I tried looking this stuff up myself but there's so many different tribes and so much information it's hard to differentiate the information I'm interested in.
>>
>>54978013
Don't worry about it. It never bothered Hollywood to make shit up on the spot, it shouldn't bother you. Have an old fart on hand to peer at an incoming warband and yell "hold yer fire! Them's [random Indian tribe-sounding noun, like Crow or Blackfoot] markins, they's the good injuns round these parts"
>>
>>54978130
It's mostly an issue of making sure I get the languages right. The tribes wouldn't actually be the real ones, but I want to make sure I get the languages tied to the correct "archetype" right and also just that I have the right "types" in general. Another useful thing would just be knowing how the tribes were differentiated. I found a general list (nomadic buffalo followers, agri based, hunters/gatherers, etc.) but I think I'd like a few more differences to focus on.
>>
>>54978254
If this is for a game, relax your autism a bit, no one is going to care.

If this is for a novel or something, do a little more reading and a lot less asking 4chan.

But as to your question, face paint and feather arrangement. Specifics either don't matter or are too important - see above.
>>
>>54978343
It is for a game, just not deadlands. I'm just interested in making the world cool but since a core concept is gonna be cowboys versus indians (and old v new, tradition v progress, etc.) i want to be careful about how I do indians since just having indians without much thought can seem racist or insensitive or whatever and, more importantly to me, shallow.
>>
>>54978440
>just having indians without much thought can seem racist or insensitive or whatever

Old movies didn't give a shit, and neither should you, because unless one of your players is part of a tribe or some kind of retard screaming about how you're oppressing every culture by not representing shit 100% factually or something, thats probably the only kind of indians they know of.
>>
>>54978440
There's a Deadlands book about the Indian tribes if that helps any. Has some bits that talk about their languages and spirit animals and whatnot.
>>
>>54978642
Oh I made sure that my emphasis wasn't necessarily on appearing insensitive, but I think it's interesting that indian tribes lived different lifestyles and capturing the essence of the important types of lifestyles (since the minutia is irrelevant as said) is important I think. It's funny because I actually have one tribe set conceptually already, but they aren't based on an actual indian tribe, they're basically just bad medicine men/skinwalkers exiled from each tribe and coalesced into their own.
>>
>>54978690
This sounds like it'd be useful, I'll look for it.
>>
So, how valuable do you think a young child with the uncanny ability to know where every train in the Americas is, as well as exactly what is on it (in terms of tonnage and value only)?
The rail wars is already won, so that limits the usefulness of it some, but I'd imagine most factions would still get some use of of them.

Valuable enough for rail barons, or possibly just a bunch of bandits with maybe a huckster as their leader. Stories have been brewing about their uncanny ability to avoid patrols and slip in with minimal bloodshed. Huge bounty set up by a shadowy organization. (Maybe what's left of all the rail barons uniting in secret against a common enemy) You play the kid like the forecaster in fallout new vegas.

I usually mix in some postmodern jukebox and vitamin string quartet as well Morricone and all manner of proper classical composers. The Beast and the Harlot comes across appropriately westerny run through a strings only arrangement.

Then again I'm not super-averse to covers. YouTube also has entire channels dedicated to original mood music you can snag.

Sunday dinner went smashingly well, with player and pc hunger hitting a boiling point right at the height of Grimme's sermon even the deader felt a twinge in his stomach and forced a few rolls down after service.

Likely have more story when I don't have to be up in 7 hours

Are you looking for background music, or inspirationally thematic listening music?

For the former, Borderlands 2 has a surprisingly good ambient assortment. Check out Windshear Waste Ambience, and Badass Crater of Badassitude Ambience.

For the latter, Murder By Death, Brown Bird and Goodnight, Texas ought to get you sorted.

I'm building a character, and while I don't need to completely minmax, I want to be able to contribute.

What are the "must-have" edges in the game for different play styles? Like, a rifleman with pistol backup probably wants Marksman, at least, plus... what?
>>
>>54993464
Should probably let us know which edition you're playing too.
>>
>>54993464

Edition, and I guess, depends what you want to do really. Give us more info Anon.
>>
>>54993464
Well, you have to take Curmudgeon, and at least 8 points in Faith, so you can take Mucho' Faitho'.
That's going to cost you at least 4 talent points, so you are best of making your character a Wampum Spender, from Canada, because they have the best talent to points ratio.
>>
>>54993696
>>54993965
Reloaded, which I assumed you'd get from the inclusion of edges, and also because it ought to be the assumed default.

Let's start simple, with a basic gunslinger. Are there any edges I'd be an idiot not to take?

>>54994320
Oho, I see your game. You're just trying to trick us into playing with the Canadian expansion so you can do a Toronto Shuffle or something like that. Well piss on that, we play by proper Islington rules here.

If that strikes your fancy but you want a bit of a different setting there is noir, post-apocalyptic, and sci-fi versions of Deadlands with the first being my favorite. Desperate people in an impoverished land trying to just get by while dark whispers call out to them from shady corner hoping to consume, or worse yet, empower the poor saps.
>>
>>54994760

I like Trademark Weapon, since hitting more often is always a good idea in any sort of game, but that requires you to shortchange some stats a bit normally at chargen.
>>
>>54994760
It depends entirely on what exactly you want in a character.
If you want to be a duelist, Duelist and Quick Draw are great, if you want to be a Sharpshooter, Steady Hands and Marksman are fantastic, if you want to be a Two Gun Pistolero, Two-Fisted is a must.
If you tell us your actual character idea, then we can give you advice, otherwise we might as well copy and paste the whole Edges section for you.

More important than almost any Edge is Skills. Any Savage Worlds character, unless they have a really, really good reason not to, should have at least a d4 in Notice, Fighting, and Stealth.

Reloaded is the current and recommended edition. Classic is easier to pirate but is a little clunkier. There's also an aborted d20 variant that people wisely did not stick with for very long.

Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorers Edition and the 2 Deadlands books for it (Players Guide, and Marshal's Handbook if you want to GM) is the best starting point. I feel like Deadlands is the kind of game that benefits from that kind of passive larping. I want to buy a few of those real metal replica guns. Adds tension when you can feel the weight of your piece instead of just imagining it. I also have /k/ levels of gun love though...

Can I hijack the thread a bit to talk about other savage worlds settings?

Has anyone played a medieval game? Looking at the basic rules, it's a hard trade off between armor and fighting skill. You need fuckhigh strength to wear heavy armor without incurring penalties to fighting, but doing so probably means your fighting is lower anyway, so I guess it evens out?

Are there any specific settings for knights and wizards and shit whose books I should look at?

Hellfrost is fimbulwinter taking hold in a fantasy setting as the gods try and figure out what happened to the gods of the sun and fire.

Haha I'm about to run one, which turned into two. Also more strength means more melee damage which means mr. armor if he's willing to sacrifice other attributes and skills becomes pretty good.

Deadlands only uses it as an optional mechanic built into huckster spellcasting. You can cast with power points for the typical result, or bet with satan to save some of your mana, or shoot for an atypical effect.

Through the breach is a diceless gm doesn't "roll" rpg relying entirely on a manipulatable semi-random personal deck of cards. Like I said very nifty. Counting your own cards becomes part of the game. Very involved and non-standard character creation as well. I was only briefly a player a decent while ago so my knowledge on the subject is limited.

Deadlands Reloaded uses the cards as an initiative system, they also use them for the western duels. In Reloaded you only need one set of cards, but it's just as important for the Marshall as the dice.

Unless you have Hucksters, in which case at least one more is required if the character likes to Deal with the Devil. I also think it might be wise to have you dueling deck separate from the initiative deck.

Made this map on roll20 and exported to image. Meant to go with the Marshal Handbook adventure "Comin' Round the Mountain" in Deadlands Classic.

I think so, might as well try joining right?
>>
>>55064674
Technically, but no one's heard from the GM in almost a week. Join up, maybe we'll start a new thing?

Worst comes to worst, can anyone else GM?

Houngan here, I'd prefer to play, since I have never had a chance to actually play Savage Worlds, but if need be I will run it.

If I were to run the game, it would be set in the Northwest, focusing on building a community around what would become Aberdeen, Washington.

I've been reading a bunch of the Classic sourcebooks and there's a few other factions with like the Indians and the Chinese. The Sons of Tomorrow, Rattlesnake Clan, Sioux Union (not to be confused with Sioux Nations), Collegium, etc.

I remember there being a faction that was basically the Vatican's super-secret paranormal investigative force. Can't remember the name though.

Probably a stupid question but we're new to playing this and my players have been wondering and I haven't found a clear-cut "Yes" or "No" to it yet in the Classic manuals - is D12 the maximum die type for a trait/aptitude? Or can it be increased to D20? (Obviously this would be ridiculously expensive since d12 is the max you can get at starting, and raising to D20 would cost a staggering 60 bounty points, but my players were still wondering if it's even possible.)

Well, we'll have that as a backup plan I guess. Hopefully the GM was just busy or something.

D12+1, D12+2, etc, but they need custom races to allow for it.
>>
>>55067223
Are there any edges in deadlands that allow that? I feel like there were a few but I can't find any.

Pg 35 of core (the newer edition I guess) player guide book says: "After reaching a d12 in a Trait, the Trait's value rises in steps of 2. The next highest Trait after d12 is d12+2, then d12+4, and so on, until you end up running into some critters that could give nightmares to your nightmares."

So far the only stuff I've seen rolling d20s is for damage for dynamite and certain creatures.

Can someone explain this to me? Used to watch WB cartoons when I was younger but I don't remember this guy.

One of the skits from Animaniacs. One of the weakests one. Non-speaking chicken dresses up and pretends to be a person, one person goes "Hey thats a chicken", everyone else goes "Yer full of it", and then this continues until the chicken somehow ends up losing it's clothes, and then everyone is like "omg that guy is a chicken".
