He has a good point though. Once you reach level 20, if you aren't part of an order dedicated to messing with other Wizards, Wizard duels are essentially MAD. Either you go nuclear on turn 1 and they don't have contingent magic, or they do have contingent magic and you need to flee.

The Realms went through a lot of NPC creep over the years.
In the early days, when he was just sort of 'that wizard on the hill' who was basically good for identifying magic items and pontificating to Ed Greenwood, he wasn't that bad; just another sage, basically. But then, there started to be adventures, and novels, and all of a sudden he was leading adventurers around by the nose like a cheap knock-off of Fizban. (And then, of course, Fizban vanished, because Dragonlance is boring shit, so he got to escape being known as the Worst Wizard Ever.)
Of course, 3rd Edition, where the screenshot comes from, was the worst. A lot of the earlier sourcebooks would just sort of ignore the ridiculous mary sue-ness that showed up in the novels and adventures, and treated the npcs as if they were typical stock npcs. But 3rd Ed's guide talked them up to a ridiculous amount, and still had the nerve to say 'but of course it's *your* story, amirite?' Just one of its many mistakes.

History is a force of its own, and when the right ingredients are available, it produces results. Individual humans help it along, but it's the sort of thing where if one person didn't come up with it, all the ingredients were there for someone else to do so.

This is not to belittle their achievements or the genius that enabled them to combine often dramatically disparate evidence and to gamble on hypotheses that the odds weren't in favor for, but the same thing happens in Science as it does in the rest of History where one person is used to represent thousands of others, many who are not even aware what their hard work would be lent towards.

Robert Brown had no clue that tracking the motion of pollen in water would be used for a proof of molecules some 80 years later, nor did Brahe have any inclination of just how much Kepler would extrapolate from his meticulous data sets, but there work was of fundamental importance.
