How the hell do I properly scale a map?

Go out and walk, i do alot of hiking and hunting and it seriously improves my sense of scale and idea of how daunting and arduous a journey to a far flung dungeon can be

Or you could look at lot of maps? Go put be social? Look at maps of different things? Map of your state/country. Map of your town. Map of current event like a fair.
