>Clearly demonstrate ability to transfer souls into statues
>brings everyone back as rotting mummies instead
>don't even bother transferring tomb king souls into golden statues
They're fucking idiots, that's what went wrong

they were promised golden bodies

Mechanically, the army barely worked and was subpar for most of its career. I played TK before 7th ed and the endless monstrous creatures and support, killing stuff was kinda problematic. Hail, archers and little else.
Thematically, nothing. It was an army for people that liked their well-made undead egyptians, and the rules were tailor-made to be lore-related and to torpedo your winning chances. Still cool as fuck, even after many years. I still cry that I never got to do an undead Assyrian or Hittite army as a TK "border kingdom". Never managed to get HOW I could model it.
And nowadays? Nothing again. We were nuked, Settra went out with a bang, and we are spared AoS' inanities. We died with dignity. With honour.
Sub-par units and even worse ruleset for them

Is it dying with honor and dignity when you leave the world worse then it was before?

Yes, because you will always be remembered as a sign of better times and how much things suck without you around.
It's a pretty self-centered interpretation for sure, but so is Settra.
