Is this a good type of green stuff? I've heard stories about some epoxies not responding to tools very well.
>>54937051 repostin with a better picture.
Twinlaser-Rak Helbrute for my Word Bearers.
Come for the judgemend, stay for the chance to repent.
>>54937423
>
Only issue with that is you get a cures strip down the middle which is a waste and kind of a pain. I tend to prefer pic related, myself.
>>54937509
I said it before you painted it and i'll say it again; I don't like the missiles on the arms.
I thought maybe you'd be turning them into a pipe organ on his back or something..
That aside the paintjob is really nice, the freehanding on the tabbards is great
>>54937423
free range green stuff has much finer texture
>>54937423
Looks like the same stuff I use from different people. Works fine for normal gapfilling and fixing, or making into pipes with that roll-maker. Haven't done any proper sculpting with it yet, though, still new to conversions and such.
Personally I haven't ran into the cured area in the middle, but it seems I was lucky.
>>54937546
Thanks. I thought about it. I really liked the "mini emperor titan" look this weapon setup has going. That being said I plan to use the Exorcist rocket pipe organ on another dread in the future.
>>54937423
Never tape, always bars. See >>54937539

>>54928690
Paint the rim with black gesso. It makes it look clean and matte, plus a bit easier to pick up.
>>54929466
Looks good to me. Be warned that purple Nurgle triggers some of the anons in the 40k general.
>>54929621
WE WUZpainted very well. Dat skintone. Dat red. Dat purple. Dat manly beard.
>>54930015
Old GW stuff used to recommend the following for mostly black minis.
>Step 1: Prime white.
>Step 2: Paint everything except for the teeny tiny white bit black.
>>54932354
Thin your paints. Touch up mistakes. Nice free hand on the banner though.
>>54934023
I wish my lost minis looked that good.
>>54934807
Neat.Horsecock when?
>>54934936
Thin your paints. The white is way too thick.
>>54937554
You're not wrong but it's absolutely impossible to get.
>>54937554
kinda like wild corndogs.
Finished my first ever mini. In the future going to get a dip for the wash. I hated using my brush and felt like I was just covering shit in black and had to go back with an empty wet brush to grab excess.
Father of Brood coming through.
Experimenting with feathering not too shabby so far (imo)
>>54938158
try loading less liquid on your brush. Rub or roll the brush on your pallet or a paper towel. I would say dipping is worse for doing that sort of cleanup unless you don't care.
>>54938376
I'm having a lot of trouble in general with how much I should be wiping off my brush and how wet it should be before loading in general, for every stage. My paint thinness feels right but not my brush technique.
>>54938164
I like it, but what do you mean by 'feathering'?
>>54938422
Well that comes after your first mini. Less is usually the direction to err toward.

Whats with all the grey plastic, did you even prime this fucker?
Also T H I C C
>>54938919
Shoulda cleaned up your bits boi
>>54939083
Think coats. Wash, highlight.
Watch Duncan.
>>54939083
1. Clean your parts. No sprue nubs, no moldlines. Fill your gaps with green stuff where the glue doesn't do it's job.
2. Prime the model. Gray or the dominant color.
3. TWO THIN COATS
4. WASH AND HIGHLIGHT
5. STOP SHITPOSTING
>>54939101
Ya I should have
>>54939093
Grey primer, left shoulder applied way to much white way to thickly definitely should cleaned my flash lines and sprue marks up, thin my paints next time, it was my first model
>>54938919

>>54938919
Watch this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CHVvvwbbek
>>54938158
Clean the flash off next time. All minis, reaper in particular, have flash and mold lines on them when you get them. If you don't clean them off before painting it looks like ass afterwards.
Finally working again on this miniature. The ides was to test a variant of the style where I paint black outline not only on the creviced, but aldo the edges that I usually highlight.
I think the result is nice, but it is really stressing, since the black outline must be really clean and regular. Probably works better in larger miniatures with lots of sharp edges.
Also, I recently taught a small child how to paint, and I was paying attention to what keeps people from painting with really small strokes (the key for small, clean detail). I notised some people paint the strokes by moving the entire hand around the wrist or even the entire arm around the shoulder. This does not allow really small, delicate movements and strokes. It is better to grab the brush so that you can move it by retracting the fingers that hold the tip (thumb and index finger mainly) so that they pull the brush inwards. This enables really small movements, and an easy repetition of them. This leads to small strokes and clean, precise paintjobs.
>>54939472
Yeah, I see that now. When it was unpainted, I didn't think they were a big deal or that noticeable but they became way more apparent with paint.
Is flash different from mold lines? I guess I don't know what that is. On my frostgrave minis I ordered I filed off all the traces from the sprue.
>>54939707
Flash = really big mold lines. I was being retarded acting like they were different.
Paint makes mold lines stick out like crazy. I always miss some before I prime. You can just remove them after priming though, and use some brush on primer on the bare areas.
I put a bunch of minis in a jar with full strength purple power. The reaper bones came out fine but the 1 plastic deathwatch marine I put in is kinda rough looking. Anyone have experience with purple power?? I was under the impression it was safe for plastics
>>54939957
If its rough looking, it probably still has paint on it.
>>54938450
Multiple very thin layers of paint for subtle highlighting
>>54940015
>>54937509
top heresy
>>54934632
Still waiting for them to finish curing. Unfortunately I have learned it is absolutely necessary to tack the mini's down. The two that weren't because they stood just fine floated up, so at least two of the moulds are probably no good.
>>54940420
I'd hazard a guess and say that there is, indeed, still paint on it.
>>54940420
the layers of paint are coming off, scrub it with a toothbrush and it should clean up pretty easily.
>>54939673
Looks like he's made of mahjong tiles..
Got distracted by other projects but now it's time to get back to my Sons.

>>54941012

>>54937509
Absolutely metal. THIS is 40k.
>>54941089
Spartan helmets and shields, chain-polearms, one-hand pistols and some sights and red-dots.
Fuck the rules, I have plans for these Intercessor's and Reivers.
>>54940598
good job m8
Also, those might be the first cork bases I've seen that don't look like shit.
>>54940598
Those are some nice, clean models anon. Damn good stuff.
>>54939673
The painting is nice so far, but what the fuck is that model?
Third one of my Electroservitors. I suspect I'll do one more Wolverine-pattern guy if that, my greenstuff skills are not sufficient to make the claws look good and it took forever.
>>54942398
I have removed the worst of the glob on his left hand, but I'm sure as hell not going to manage redoing the claw angles before I go completely insane.
Question for folks who've worked with the kits - are the arms from Primaris Reivers compatible with the Intercessors kit, proportion-wise?
>>54940437
>>54941204
Glad you guys like it. Last week I also finished the dark apostle I will be using when playing cultist heavy. As soon as I get my hands on that primaris chaplain I will build a second one.
>>54937509
what kit is the griffin chest piece from?
>>54942749
If Im not wrong its the fantasy empire greatswords kit.
>>54942787

>>54942749
>>54942903

checked, no dice.
Pretty sure I'm going to redo the eyes. Otherwise I think he came out alright.
Doing that white Exalted Sorcerer I said I would do. I ended up not really liking the white and black so I changed it to white and blue. Still, I feel like this color scheme is one of those ones that looks like absolute dogshit up until the last brush stroke. Hopefully it looks better after some more work on it.
>>54943364
I'd say it looks better than my black and white even now. And yes, until you finish on white it looks like a bit of a mess.
The bones adventure continues. He's hella lumpy looking. Ive been bouncing between Princeton synthetic brushes and a WN series 7 and I think I actually like the Princetons more.
>>54941208
Will be glorious! Keep us posted anon.
>>54942551
Beautiful execution and a great theme. Love this model, always have, great sculpt and you did it justice with that paint job.

>>54939673
That's exactly how I paint actually....
I've posted alot of wip typhus images but I actually paint with only toothpicks and I do super small strokes by just retracting the thumb and pointer finger
Reposting from last thread.
>>54944583
Need to shade your white.
Otherwise goodjob
>>54944583
White and the helmet in general looks off,
Try using an off-white like Ulthuan/celestra Grey then do a thinned shade of nuln then reapply Ulthuan/celestra in non-reccesses then highlight with True-white. For the Visor try applying ardcoat to make it shine and reflect.
Bronze could use some highlights and paint the Spiritstones on his chest
>>54940549
RON!
>>54944771
>>54944770
I don't have any greys (just black and white). I should be able to mix something up.
How would you highlight the bronze? It's Gehenna gold (which I thought was the replacement for SHINING gold). Should I mix some runefang steel with it?
>finally finished
>realize I need to strip and repaint 15 more and find or make 10 bomb squigs
The ride never ends
>>54943348
needs more contrast I think, maybe if you put some shade in the recesses of his armor.
So I did end up lobbing off the old Necron scythe for a different one and started painting the actual sickle
Lemme know what u guys think
Also literally at a hotel for a convention painting while waiting for the gf to be done with makeup
>>54945158
Blade looks kind of flimsy, also there isn't a whole lot of contrast in colors on the armor overall so looks kind of flat and uniform in most places, not terribly visually interesting.also the blade of a scythe isn't called a sickle that's a different farm tool
>>54945127
look neat thou
Built a few models for my witch hunters Inquisition but I'm really not sure on how to base them.
>>54945485
Definitely some kind of ruin, lots of beaten down metal and debris. If not that, the classical mud never fails
first test model for my primaris, not done yet, but looking for feedback on the armour, the weathering look ok? too little? too much?
gonna add some dusty/dirty washes to the feet when i do the base too.
>>54946245
The glow around the eyes doesn't look like glow, just kind of looks like someone smeared guacamole on his visor
>>54945485
Front right's head doesn't look great quality-wise compared to the ones around it...
>>54937302
Based them. Sorry about all the yellow lighting.
>>54938084
You see, the domesticated variety of corndog has been bred for many successive generations to produce a much more appealing and edible fruiting body. The wild corndog is quite unlike the ones we enjoy today.
>>54947015
Now with 80% less yellow!
>>54946245
I love the look of colored metallic. I initially started my asstarts in candy apple red, some deep golds with tamiya red, but its such a bitch to do with a brush and I'm having the hardest time doing any meaningful highlights that show up once covered in the red.
>>54947139
Why try to do obvious highlights with that kind off paint job?
Stopped work on the ScAvengers to finish Big 'Ed. Head from a stompa, arms from a Defiler. The rest is a hacked up and repositioned deff dread. Getting a second deff dread skortcha tomorrow to go into the empty weapons socket. Painted it up over several hours just to have it ready to field tomorrow, so I'll go back over it and add highlights later.
>>54947411
Cool idea, I like it. Got an in focus pic?
>>54947440
Phone camera sucks for macro, but I can't find my actual camera and tripod so its what I've got for now.
Anyone got advice on how to paint reptile skin? I ordered some stuff feom Mierce Miniatures and picked up one of their crocodile warriors cos it looked cool (and ive been trying to find a Smart Max Canopic Beast model for ages and settled on this instead)
Another question would be how far could i push the colour? Idk if i wanna do greens on this, i was thinking maybe reds or yellows, more warm colours. Thoughts?
Image is what i got
>>54946245
The metallic blue looks great but the eye glow is really too much. I'd say repaint and try a much gradual look. A green glaze would do wonders here
>>54947612
Start with a really dark green, then drybrush a slightly brighter green over the whole thing. Apply a green wash, then re-apply the drybrushing once it dries. Go in with a third, even lighter green and drybrush from the direction of the raised parts of the scales (usually from the tail towards the head). Once this is done, drybrush a beige-green for the underbelly and areas inside the arms and legs. Put a brown wash over the whole thing to make it look muddy.
>>54938158
Try drybrushing a lighter bone color like Citadel Ushabti Bone on it, other than that you got all the paints in the lines so congrats you got the basics down.
>>54947612
If you can find the dark elf painting guide there is a good step by step on painting cold ones that work for you
>>54946274

Alpha legion warp talon
Yes? No?
Some WIP plague bearers for my Nurgle horde. Can't wait for September releases
>>54948082
I'd make it a little more daemonic, I know Alpha Legion aren't big on that but its kind of a Warp Talon requirement
>>54941208
absolutely keep us updated on that, If i weren't playing BT, I'd be playing Minotaur.
>>54945127
Rhino on the right looks wonderful, I love the penetration damage. How did you do that?
Major WIP, but got a shapeways model. Not sure If my primer made it so chalky or if there was some residual dust on the model, but kind of late to fix it.
>>54948338
residual dust. Gotta wash it before priming and scrub.
I have the exact model you have posted. Primed, but not
>>54948338

>>54948338

I have an old rhino I'm planning on stripping and repainting but it's missing it's treads, anyone have a simple way to make some new ones? ideally I don't want to go buy new parts
My Chadian flesh stone paint is all weird, like it's dry and wet so it's all kinda old fucked when I put it on this guy.
Would it be better to just use Khorne red, does that still count as a fleshy color?
>>54947584
Thinking of adding a monkey tail with some bundled wires coming out of the back. Any ideas for bits that would work for this?
>>54948469

>>54948500
Did you shake the love out of it with some thinner? Rakarth flesh is a lot like that, and you either have to thin it down or buy a new bottle.
>>54948441
Not even sure how to strip this. It's not plastic, but some really soft flexible stuff. Don't want it to melt.
>>54948376
Yea. I'm hoping that when I'm done I can spray a clear coat and it'll smooth out.

How am I doing on my first paint job?I'm having a ton of fun
>>54948624
If you used acrylic paints, rubbing alcohol should do the trick. Leave it in a small container for 15 minutes, then gently brush off the paint with an old soft bristle toothbrush
>>54948624
I'd use simple green, think you'd be OK with that.

No, not those Masters of the Chapter models. They're ugly and aren't in the codexfrom what I've seen
Dumb question: Do citadel shade paints go bad after a while? I have an old bottle of nuln oil and every time Ive used it recently it looks kinda off
>>54949977
All space marine parts are compatible with eachother, baring the chads.
The Captain kit has the works, but really you can just pimp out a space marine using your favorite bits.
>>54950018
So just make something out of anything that looks like they're in charge. Got it
>>54949977
Just go find the cool bits you want from a bits site. Vanguard veteran legs are great for a dynamic pose.
Re-did the white.
I think I need to thin the wash some more.
I also tried mixing paint for gold highlights. It's not a strong effect but I think it worked. I just wasn't quite sure where to put them.
I'm gonna try layering some blue wash over the gemstones to see if it works instead of mixing up a gradient.
>>54949977
Primaris and bitzswap?
>>54949684
Thank you. First boyz I've ever painted.
>>54947612
I'd say look for some good reference pictures.
Find something with colors or a pattern that looks good to you and then tweak to taste if necessary.
But always use a reference for stuff like this, it always improves the end result.
>>54946245
Wash the gold, you want to create some depth to it.
And as others has stated, that glow is to much.
When doing glow, thin down the paint so that it makes a wash look to thick. Apply several thin layers and work your way inwards. And always think that the point of the glow should be the brightest, so never use the same color to make the glow effect as you use for final highlights on the source.
Other than that, I think you are on the right track with your marines, great job and keep us posted!
>>54945127
Playing horde armies is like that, but on the flipside, your work is beautiful! Keep it up.
So I'm doing a Black Templar Watch Master, should I whip him up a full tabard or let him keep all his chest bling? Sorry for the shit photo.
>>54950451
Deathwatch lore position on tabards for context.
>>54950451
>>54950461
current half-tabbard looks better, and the FFG rpg's are non-canon
>>54950451
>>54950461
Guess to make it to the top in a unit like the Deathwatch you should probably have to be a team player.
You can still add BT specific stuff that doesn't mess with the DW uniform though. A lantern and a few chains around his waist for their symbolic meanings or something along those lines maybe.
The helmet already has a nice knightly theme to it though.
>>54950519
>FFG is non canon
And yet Calixis is on the 8th edition map.
>>54950524
Yeah that's what's giving me trouble. I kinda feel like you'd almost have to give up your chapter identity and live and die by the Deathwatch to become the master of a Watch Fortress, but Deathwatch was my second choice after BTs for my new army so I really wanted my warlord to be a Templar. I've tried to slip some visual cues in like the helmet and I carved up his spear to look a bit more like a voulge/guisarme but I'm struggling to think of ways to really make him stand out as a PROUD SON OF SIGISMUND AND THE HOLY FATHER DORN without sacrificing some of the DW stuff.
I was thinking of rigging up a chain around his arm connected to the spear but is that too much?
>>54948732
Paint is a bit thick.
>but how do I thin my paint
Get a palette (a plastic lid will do fine), wipe excess paint off the brush and add a little bit of water (dip the tip of your brush in your paint water and then mix it with what's on the palette). It will take a little bit of practice to get the consistency right.
You've also gone straight to what I assume is your brightest colour. It's better to start dark and work your way up so you have something to highlight with.
It doesn't have to be a dark colour, just darker than what you've got now, if that makes sense.
>>54950621
I kinda like him as is. As someone said, a chain around the waist would be the most I'd add; otherwise it looks really good
Don't fuck up the paintjob or Dorn will cry
>>54950621
>I was thinking of rigging up a chain around his arm connected to the spear but is that too much?
I don't think so. It's a part of their warrior tradition and also to some degree represents their understanding of duty. I feel like this would be in the realm of a custom pistolgrip or something like that. It's a bit extravagancy and individualism, but it doesn't mess with the uniform on the whole.
Doesn't maybe you can add one of the small shouldershields with the templar cross to him if you want him to look more a bit more 'patriotic'.

eyes aren't done yet, i removed a fiar bit of the green on the top visor and plan to use some form of llight paint thinner/stripper to smudge off what's left, the spray i used was enamel (im fairly certain) from tamiya, so it's harder to paint over - accidentally got too thicc with my green.
>>54947139

Camo is more arbitrary(?). Roughen would be the tool in graphic arts (add points and randomly stretch points)
The trick is either to wing the whole thing or to find some camo and copy one or more of the shapes exactly. Camo also has 3 colors and the appearance of layers- generally.
But yeah your shapes are just too uniform.

EXTRA HIGH DETAIL
>>54959054
Depends on what you wat to do. Looks like it is prepainted, so if you want to use that as starting point you should proabably start with a matte varnish, so the paint has something to grip onto and then add panel lines and start weathering.
If you plan on completely repainting it you are gonna need primer, paints and whatever you want to use for weathering.
Depending on what version of the falcon you are doing it could look like a pile of junk or a colossal pile of junk, so you'll probably also want load up on washes and maybe pigments.
Id recommend checking out the weathering magazine (one of the megas in the 40k general should have them). They've got a series of really interesting articles for painting and weathering metals, desert environments, engine grime etc.
Are the canopy parts glued in or can you take those out? Painting the model without the clear parts is probably gonna be easier regardless of how you want to approach this.

That color scheme for their armor is great. For their base you might wanna do a lighter color to contrast their dark armor. I'd do snow but I love arctic scenery in general so I'd put snow bases on anything. Maybe try a white cliffs of Dover kinda thing? It'd fit the refined nature of elves.

I'd paint the head (or atleast part of it, like the little bumb that runs ontop of the helmet) black as well, to help tie in the scheme to the rest of the model. I use a similiar scheme with my purifiers.
Also, the dark color of your base makes it kinda hard to see the legs imho.

When you highlight, do you highlight like the Eavy Metal painters by highlighting every raised surface, or do you highlight with source lighting in mind?
Do you guys think Blood Raven tactical squads/bolter cannon fodder Marines look better with black or gold chest eagles? >>54958944
Sure. Basically for the chipping I approach it the same way as highlighting, though instead of getting a neat straight line on every edge, try to dot in the lines sparingly or add tiny brush strokes towards the edge, as opposed to directly on the edge. Then even more sparingly, apply small/tiny dots/lines towards the center of armour pieces. Tooka fair bit of practice with ym weathering (though, not on a metallic/enamal model like this one) it just takes a bit of practice to get it looking right, i guess. I'd even say some of the 'chipping' i painted onto the model I posted doesn't quite look right, but overall it seemed ot have worked quite well. Hope that explanation makes sense, honestly it took me about 3 or 4 attempts on other minis before I was satisfied with how I did it.

main things are;

also, first time using transfers, did they come out ok? (i intentionally scratched/chipped them)
its still a wip and test model though, need to do heaps to the models smaller details. basically all the not-blue parts arent done. needs shades/washes/highlights/blending etc. on just about everything. fuck lol.
>>54962394

>>54962467
thanks think i need another really thin coat of varnish on the shoulder though looks a bit uneven.
also, understandable, i used to hate metallics. I only opted for this scheme as i wanted to try a "realistic" scheme and try and imitate how marines are depicted in the codex art.

>>54948327

i paint most of the lens/towards the middle of the lens white, i then go over that with a really thin moot green and apply a small amount around the eyes and outside of the lens, i then hit the recesses of the eyes, around the lens with a black wash. After that I usually go back and re highlight the lens' white/blend the green better. but as I sprayed this metallic paint on and don't have it as paint-on paint I can't really do that. So i'm planning to use thinner of some sort to remove (gently) the excess gren below the lens'. (I've seen the technique used before and in this case if i'm gentle i'll be able to thin out the green on it, without removing/stripping the enamel underneath - making it look better than it currently is)

Can I get an opinion, /tg/? If this thread isn't dead yet?
Left or right?
Starting a Dark Eldar army and I am trying to finalize my scheme. This is my test model so far. I'm happy with the white black and blue primary/secondary/tertiary colors (I know my execution is kind of sloppy and my photo skills are mediocre), but it was hell trying to decide what to do with the tabbard. It's such a big space.
I think the red looks good in isolation, but I am leaning towards to blue/sea green for the cloak. There is no red anywhere else on the model, it contrasts too much I think and is warm while I want to overall model to be "cold" and a little more subtle.
Opinions? I've gotten differing answers from people.
>>54962961
Well, it is a little bit small, but the overall effect of the model is instantly recognizable and rather elegant. I might have to look into doing something similar since I find the official assassin models very hit-or-miss (and HOLY CRAP EXPENSIVE).
But as for other uses for the skulls... *all* the bases, I guess. I'm actually considering buying them for diorama purposes myself.
>>54963249

Don't use Gimp. Use Paint.net. I have photoshop and sometimes I use Paint.net when I just want to open something quickly and resize it.
Paint.Net is easy, a super-friendly program. Gimp is one of those programs people use to just to prove how geeky they are, while snickering "Gimp is friendly, it's just picky about who it's friends are."

I know you say your happy with the white, but i really would suggest a darker tone along with a green recess wash to make it blend with the rest of the model a bit.
