With their vast underground fortresses it should be common for many dwarves to live their whole lives without seeing more than a handful of other races. Arguably this is/was the case in Warhammer Fantasy. Elves were taught magic by the Old Ones and Slann.

Okay, so, dwarves live in hubs of industry, very densely populated cities and almost no rurals, right?

Therefore, I take it that they don't have a very charitable culture, and therefore, that they'd be unwilling to place much of their resources into social security or welfare, because in Dwarven society, people are generally expendable and clans (If those are your kinds of dwarves) are a more important in-group than the nation.

Therefore, I propose that any dwarf realm in a modern or early modern setting, is a cutthroat ANCAP state where societies are divided based on, in order of importance, clan firstly and class secondly.

There's plenty of social strife and violence in such an unstable hive city, where factory proles are worked to the bone and dwarves are hesitant to tell their clan, just in case a unionist or a corrupt officer is within earshot.

This is the most important concept. One cannot exist without the other. To a certain degree, Shape does define what the Stone becomes... flint makes a good striking stick... but the reverse is just as true... you can't make a good striking stick without flint. It is perhaps stated most simply in this way. As slate will flake and crack under the sculptor's chisel, so will a dwarf who knows not his purpose, knows not his Shape.

Back when I was playing 3.5 D&D, I tried making a dwarf as a blend of mongolian/chinese cultures. It actually fit in pretty well as I recall.

The best part was when I was asked by a local warlord (I.E. - Orc cheiftan) what was best in life as he tried to impress us.

I'm pretty fond of the traditional dwarf if you just tone down the macho posturing that creeps into D&D depictions. I just like to hew to a few principles:

>dwarves are NOT stronger and tougher than humans.
They're fairly durable for their size, that's all. They're still a race of little people and frown on implausible brags about how many orcs you can cleave with an axe.

>Dwarves aren't all drunks.
They drink a lot by other races' standards, but that's just because they're naturally resistant to intoxication and beer is like water to them. Becoming genuinely pissed is frowned on in dwarf society, which places a great premium on honour and dignity. The thought of drinking so much that your judgement and even memory might be impaired is intensely shameful to the average dwarf.

So with these points given, we see that dwarfs are a sober and industrious people, who take great pride in their skill and secret crafts that let them stand to to toe with physically mightier races. At the same time they survive in dangerous underground environments by dint of hard labour and endless careful engineering, and on top of that they have a serious gender imbalance so the average young dwarf faces a lifetime of solitary toil in the service of his clan.

In light of all this it's perhaps not surprising that there's a significant subset of dwarf men who at some point say to hell with all this and lay down the pickaxe, abandoning clan and hold to seek mercenary work in those messy, sprawling human cities where you can drink as much as you like and sing out of tune and insult people to their face because who gives a shit, you're not going to have to work alongside that stranger in the tavern for the next hundred years.

If it's this sort of dwarf that humans who don't live near dwarf settlements are likely to encounter, then they could easily get a mistaken impression of dwarf society as a whole.

YES BUT most of the time modern dwarves are a sad remnant of what they used to be. Living in the shadows of their own past. The only things left to them are greed, alcoholism, talking how much better things used to be in the old day, and talking about how great their crafts are (especially weapons)...
