It ended with a huge nuclear explosion. So we have to assume that Vulkan died.

It really tore my heart that the Salamanders on Ullanor stayed behind wanting to die alongside their Primarch rather than retreating with the rest of the Imperials. Vulkan reguse to meet them prior to the invasion because he thought it would weaken them. They died without even saying hello or goodbye to their returned Primarch.
