Playing Slaanesh renegades. First turn prince advances then tries to do so again with warp time going for a first turn charge with the helldrake using its 30" to do the same.
Termies all drop down together and bunkering up next to them. Prescience and delightful agonies on the squad before opening up in shooting phase, and doing it again with the squad using endless cacophony.
The helbrute, havoks and predator buker up behind the infantry wall with the lord for rerolls and the helbrute using fire frenzy.
Burning 3 command points per turn on cacophony and fire franzy that leaves 1 command for a command reroll.

I wouldn't even go that far, it's a difference but not a contrast.
Both armies are composed of medium sized forces (usually) wielding combinations of melee and shooting weaponry that they are reasonably proficient in both.
A real contrast could be knights, guard/elysians (due to forcing combined arms/flyers), nids (swarms), tau/crons (no psykers, mainly shooty).
Any flavour of marines are similar and the faction closest to marines in playstyle is eldar, being more fragile but once again a jack of all trades army that can be modified to fit basically any role

So I want to expand my Dark Eldar because they're fun to paint. One of the two ways I'm considering doing so is making a small mostly Coven force that can either stand alone as a 1000point/50PL army of its own or dovetail with my Kabal for a bigger army.

With that in mind, would a Buff Manchest Coven army where everything is T5 (effectively) and tougher than pansy marines or orks be any good on the table top? Something like

Some Groteseques are an option too, but I honestly think they seem to be outclassed by both Wracks and Talos's in different ways.

ive just started the hobby and have got some rubric marines with intention of doing a 1ksons army, but having had a look at the wider chaos space marine unit roster im kindof concerned by their unit limitations. for example CSM can get terminators with combi plasmas and all sorts of awesome weapon customisation, but scarab occult termies get only one real option for the bulk of their troops, then optional added missile thing or a soulreaper cannon, which is admittedly decent bc of its -3ap.

what role do scarab occult termies really have? they seem best suited to just drop in and throw s4ap-2 rounds at guardsmen or something, even though they (apparently) have a melee capability that they are too slow to really make use of easily.

also, should i pick up a hellbrute? and if so is two fists w. heavy flamer a good option or is it too difficult to get hellbrutes into melee?

Why so? He seems pretty average for that price, and we really do need the buffs to keep our dakkabloops in line.

Also, I think Kataphrons get a bad rep. Gravstroyers are pretty good at burning through Marines and such even without rerolls, and can serve as anti-tank in a pinch. They just need around a 15ppm drop so they won't be pretty much strictly worse than Kastelans and I suspect people would go on running them.

Chainfist sounds tempting but -1 to hit means no DttFE. Power Axe or Axe of Blind Fury seems nice, but regular Axe doesn't seem as strong but hits more often, and the ABF seems pretty strong but hits 5/6 the time, which seems pretty decent, but then it can also hit friendlies, and the Talisman of Burning Blood seems like an auto take, too.

After the planet was conquered a painter made a great work about the victory, with the Ultramarines and Blood Angels standing victorious with the only sign of the Iron Warriors at all being a couple of corpses face down in the mud in the background. Perty didn't take it well

As a Black Templar player what would be the best way to take down the following
Bray'arth Ashmantle, a MM/claw relic Contemptor, a inferno cannon/claw Chaplain Dread, and a melta lance/claw Leviathan. I'm trying to keep my army fluffy and can deal with the two dev and sternguard squads that my opponent uses for the relic tax but those dreads are incredibly hard to kill. Salamander tactics are used for their army.
For reference my anti-tank is comprised of a vindicator, Ironclad with chainfist, two lasbacks, and a vanguard vet squad with grav pistols, fists, thunderhammers, and storm shields. I’ve thought of buying 4 lascannon Predators and having High Marshal Helbrecht and a Lieutenant stand in the middle of all 4 of them and just prioritize the Leviathan, Contemptor, Bray’arth and Chaplain in that order as that many lascannons should wipe out one per turn. On the flip side I don’t want to WAAC and would like to remain fluffy with my army, but damn if it isn’t frustrating dismantling their army and then having no answer to those dreadnoughts. You guys got any suggestions?

With the Blight War stuff, I'm getting the feeling that GW is realizing that they can make models for two game systems at half the price by just making Chaos Daemons/God stuff and sharing it between 40k.

Sternguard are another nice option for the heavy flamer/combi-flamer options or combi-melta loadouts they are famed for. My sister personally runs a lot of dreadnoughts with various flamer and melta loadouts. Don't know if you could afford it anytime soon but the Salamander's legion support cadre on FW gives you some kickass models for your army. Also since multiple units can fit in drop pods now and heavy weapons don't snap fire for moving anymore He'stan and a MM dev squad are a right nasty squad in drop pods.
Honestly Salamanders feel like one of the best armies out there for space marines due to their chapter tactics, relic options, stratagems and aesthetic. They handle hordes and tanks with ease while remaining fluffy and if you like sculpting or painting offer excellent conversion options.

Reminder that The Beast wiped out the first Imperial Fists legion.

Sicaran venators are good, but he's one of the few things that can survive a round. Overwatch him out of existence, I borrowed him once since I had nothing close to a primarch for power level and shot Magnus down to 6 wounds before he charged. Bray'arth has two dreadfire heavy flamers that are str 6 ap -2 and d 3. I rolled 7 hits and got 4 wounds, two got through. Smites could have killed him but that requires Magnus hanging back, positioning correctly and not contributing as much.

I play BT and I like them, they mulch infantry just as well as they did before and now they can put some wounds into tanks and lock them in combat. I deep strike them in and charge and so far they have become the best unit in my army, easily eating one or two other units and becoming a pain for my opponent.

Sounds like a good core to me, but i'm not sold on intercessors being better than tacticals just for the sake of versatility in a tactical squad. You can totally add in salamander stuff with that as well, greenstuff some cloaks or dragon scales on things, add some character to your dudes!
