An interesting thing in 4e is that they somewhat tried to reframe becoming a Drider as a blessing. This actually is in no way incompatible with the previous fluff of it being a punishment, both because Lolth is a crazy bitch and also because it ands to the political backstabbing and maneuvering.
Before, a Drider was stuck with a brand of their failure and displeasure, now they can try to convince everyone else it is a blessing, usually by horribly killing everyone who insinuates they failed (like any good priestess who managed to get Lolth's blessing should).
