Repostan Chaos Johnny WIP from last thread. Legs aren't posed quite right and the posture isn't slumped enough, but I think I got the arms right. Still have to order the pauldrons I need though.

Do the AOS blood warriors come with WoC heads or did you get them from a WoC box? I wanna convert something similar but the blood warriors heads are too ornate for me.

Anyone got any advice/guides for how to weather properly, specifically roughing up decals?

The Blood Warriors box does not come with them, unfortunately. I collect WoC for Sigmar so I had a bunch left over.

a metallic basecoat of your choice, the shade of red you get will depend on said basecoat, for a more pinky shade go silver for a deeper red go gold.

Those are five different poses for a squad, not different iterations of the same model. I'm open to suggestions on how to change them up if there are any you think are particularly egregious.

Practice, practice, practice.
Remove mould lines, and cut cleanly. If you damage the plastic (it happens) then work around it by making it look like battle damage. But you must be diligent with mould lines because there's no hiding those.

Salt and masking fluid applied with a sponge. That's an easy trap to fall into. I believe I have completely unpainted, complete armies/forces from 5 games lying around here. Armies completed: 0.

>>54903714
Sounds like my first attempt at salt chipping - I decided to use different sizes of salt, in different patterns, trying to figure out what looked natural. I rapidly discovered that, unless you're painting a wrecked vehicle, that less is more, for sure.

It's an entertaining process though. Have you tried the hairspray method yet? That's a fun way of weathering as well, although much more labor intensive.

Shake your damn washes and don't use gloss ones, your colors are flowing over other colors, You seem to have made no effort to highlight.Don't use gloss varnish, why is he so fucking wet/shiny
>>
>>54903869
>only having one color of wash
>only having what appears to be one tone of blue

its looks decent for what you got then matey
you will want to invest in more paints as you go on though.

looks like you are only painting with one tone of white, which is a no-no because it lacks depth and there is no way you can highlight bright white

theres an infographic guide floating around WIP that shows a much better way to paint white armor building up from grays

Yeah I did the classic path gunplay to models. I'm thinking that a purple wash for the blue skin would do well.
Yeah I need like an egg shell, if I was to redo it I'd do a far sight enclave color a skeme less to mess up. White is so fiddly when your working with such small surface area.

I wouldn't recommend buying an airbrush at all if all you want to do is lay down primer and crude blocks of colour. I have a good compressor, a crappy spraygun and an OK airbrush but I still prime with aerosol cans because it's simply better than airbrushed primer.

>>54902808

is my work and on that one I decided to use airbrush primer because I wanted to get to work on the paint job quickly. Even though I varnished after applying the primer and base coat, I still had a lot of issues with it chipping during painting. I'm going to have to give it a hefty dose of varnish once I'm finished with it, which will detract from the paintjob. I don't think I would have those issues if I'd used a spraycan primer.

In my opinion, an airbrush is only worth getting if you really want to do proper airbrush painting and are willing to invest a big chunk of cash into it.

Dungeon sculpting anon back, finally. Sorry, I didn't think this one would take me so long... got stuck on the damn hinges.

Anyway, here's what I did:

Mostly the same method as last time - template on paper, rolled out the clay (BeesPutty) and cut out the parts very carefully, detailed them with wood panelling and then baked them. The big flat one is the lid - I had an idea that didn't exactly work out.

After they were done baking, I took the lid into the bathroom and held it under hot water to soften it up a little - I had the idea that I could shape the lid, without losing any detail, into a curve that would fit the side panels. Of course, what actually happened was that it split right down the line between two planks.

"Okay, I thought, I can work with this."

So I carefully cut the lid into individual planks and spent an hour carefully cementing them into position against the side panels. Then I assembled the bottom of the chest - much easier.

Ensuring they more or less matched, I baked them, and then began adding the metal bracing that would not only add interest, but cover up the seams.

Bracing done, I added smaller braces, joining panels on all corners, and a small lock. The panels and lock were detailed with tiny screws/rivets using something I thought up on the spot - pressing the end of the tube from a bottle of Humbrol Precision Poly Cement into the clay, very gently. I think it worked rather well.

Now I sanded the interface between the bottom and lid, and it was time for the hinges...

I tried about three different ways to do these (with many broken failures, pic related), and I'm STILL not sure about my final method.

Method one: I attempted to make "clickable" hinges that would mould well and then clamp under the tension of the plastic itself once cast up. Basically a pair of cylindrical nubs that would have fitted into two sockets when pressed into place, and then stayed there. The problem was, the clay is too brittle to use this method and would crack or crumble.

Method two: I attempted to make a little claw-shaped clamp on one half of the hinge that would have fitted around the piece of toothpick that, in this version, made the axel of the hinge, and stayed there under its own tension. This *might* have worked, though it was fiddly and tended to break, but I decided the claw-clamp would be too difficult to extract from the mould without tearing it.

Method three: I moulded four cylindrical sticky-out-bits, two on the lid, two on the bottom, around a pin. Two were done first, and then neatened, then I did the other two and baked lid and bottom as one, carefully separating the clay afterwards (it doesn't stick well to previously backed pieces unless you finesse it, so this was less difficult than it sounds). It too about four tries until I finally got a set that seemed sturdy enough. Neatening them up a bit more, I tested the movement - success!
>>
>>54906059
>>54906081
However, I'm not sure about the fact that this method will require people to use a pin vice drill and insert a pin or piece of florist's wire. I think I preferred the easy assembly of the first "clickable" one. The idea is to sell casts of these, so I don't want to put people off.

What I could do is take this one, hollow out one set of the sticky-outies, then add a nub to each of the other two. Then, I can cast them without doing more than an eye-level check, and neaten up any fit on the more flexible secondary resin master using my tools and some putty.

What do you guys think? About the piece in general, and the hinges in particular? I'm open to suggestions.

Lookin good, if you can keep this standard up through all the models you need to play guard you're already above the average for most game stores. The first thing I'd consider for continued improvement would be edge highlights on the black. Drybrushing low details on the chest and using the edge of the brush for sharp corners like those on the gun should make this pretty easy to master. Keep working on maintaining a steady hand, and maybe consider adding a very thin highlight of another lighter color on the most raised edges of the khaki to really get it to pop. Also consider grabbing some shrubs, small sticks, or rocks to add some variety to the base (cut up sprue or dry sticks/rocks from your yard sealed up with pva glue should be paintainable without issue).

Ushabti bone sounds reasonable for khakis.

Highlighting black can be done a bunch of different ways including with colors (especially blues/teals) to give the armor a subtle shade.

If you want to keep a stricter non-chromatic consider a first pass of Eshin Grey, then a very thin highlight of Dawnstone. If you want to keep it to a single highlight for ease of painting, something more in the middle like storm vermin fur could do it.

The guys I'm currently working on have a pretty similar scheme. The process for the dudes in the picture are Steel Legion Drab -> Desert Yellow -> Karak Stone for the exterior Coats, Steel Legion Drab -> Karak Stone -> Ushabti Bone for the interior coat corners folded open, and a mix of Chaos Black and Eshin Grey, washed with nuln oil, then highlighted straight Eshin Grey -> Storm Vermin Fur -> Dawn Stone for the blacks.

There are several eras to my painting with significant 3-4 year gaps in between

1. 2003 to 2004 - the age of horrible conversions and unprimed paintjobs, just started to learn what drybrushing was

2. 2008 to 2013 - Now know what drybrushing is, applied devlan skill-in-a-bottle to miniatures so they started to look alright

3. Two weeks ago - Earlier today - After along break of painting and playing 15mm and 6mm historicals I got dragged back into 40k, stripping and repainting all my older stuff before I cave and buy any more. Enjoying Citadels new technical ranges.

Is it OK to go more than two thin coats if it isn't quite solid colour yet? Still new to this and my Skitarii robes and skin on some other models might need some more coverage.

Plan for the skin was Duncan's Rakarth Flesh/Reikland Fleshshade Wrack skin tutorial and going a little easier on the highlights, but I'm worried I may be thinning too much since it's kinda flowing into recesses.
Can I add a bit less water and just do another coat over the top?

Yea, more than two coats is fine. You may be overthinning your paint if you need more than two, but on some colours like bone or white you'll need more.

If your paint is 'flowing' you have too much on the brush. Stroke it against your palette to get some of the liquid out before applying it to the model

Coloured primers, army painter and plastic soldier company do greeny browny sprays that should work for guard tanks.
Failing that just buy a gravity-fed airbrush and a compressor, it'll cost you far less than that baneblade did and you'll never look back, you can get into modulation and shit which looks sweet for large vehicles and aircraft.

use a heavy drybrush to do the base paint layer, it gives a smooth finish without brushmarks if you do it properly.

use masking tape with a heavy edge seal (aka make sure its really well down) if you plan to do patterns and use the same technique, then do details once your base solid color and/or camo is done.

airbrush isn't so bad though, you can pick up a basic airbrush and small compressor from harbor freight for not too much. or a car detail sprayer if you're doing citadel base paints and are worried about clogging (see pic related)

you could do most of it without, the part that would trip you up would be the chaos star.

the best way might be to do the grey and camo striping first with heavy drybrush and masking tape, then get a can of spray red and make yourself a custom mask cutout.

this guy: http://heavytankbuilder.blogspot.com/2013/10/forge-world-scorpion-type-ii-saim-hann.html

does his with an airbrush, but you could achieve the same effect using a rattle can.

>>
>>54910565
There's no such thing as a bad dual action airbrush. As long as it has a dual action trigger and topfed paint cup it will work fine even if it's a $20 Chinese piece of shit. What you get with the more expensive brushes is smoother and lighter trigger, more delicate and fine components, and a more attractive an well built fit and finish. It's basically like a race car you built yourself or built in China vs. the same race car engine put in a Ferrari. You're still going to be going fast either way.
>>
>>54910565
See those crypt flayers up thread. I did those using that airbrush. Had the airbrush for over a year now. So long as you clean it after use etc it will do you grand for basecoats etc.
>>
>>54910565
Any gravity-fed, double-action airbrush is likely to be perfectly fine, that kind of compressor are fine too, in my experience a tank isn't necessary, it just takes up more space.

Im sure iwata and badger airbrushes are better at some things, like if you wanted to try panel lighting on a grots toenail, but for basecoating, vehicle modulation, soft-edged camo and 99% of the stuff you'd use it for a £10-15 brush will do just fine.
>>
Since we're discussing aribrushes, anyone have advice for getting the GW bases and layer paints to spray easy? I've been using Tamiya X20A as a thinner, but the problem I keep having is the crap dries up inside the airbrush before I can get anything done. Using a gravity cup on a relatively inexpensive airbrush (pics incoming soon as I can find where I put it last)
>>
>>54909894

Hi guys, would need some advice here
Some friend commissioned me to paint his Mices & Mystics heroes. I've spent roughly two to four hours per miniature, and I had to buy about ten paints for this. I believe the quality is slightly above tabletop, how much is it fair to charge him ? I've never done this before.

The picture is kinda shitty but I can't really do much better with no proper camera and no proper lighting, sorry.

Not sure what kind of backyard tank you use but with a heavy usage mine lasts atleast 15 minutes of nearly constant spraying. That's just a shittier version of a Big Sister from Bioshock, and even then it's lame bondage bait first and "cyberzombie" fourth.

Their notSisters are a meme because at the time no one really offered a suitable alternative before the Valkir conversion got popular, and it turns out that after that more people wanted cool bolter bitches over Korean-bootleg Sexy Space Nuns that Raging Heroes pitched. (Then they died even harder when Russian Bootleg Sisters became accessible)

They excel at things where the theme fits, like dark elves and their notslaanesh lustelves, where the quality for the content is ACTUALLY in-demand.

They fail at basically everything else because they force themselves to only go halfway on a theme to compromise for the sexualization aspect.

How is that supposed to help your argument? The whole nun thing is already deep in "oops-i-dropped-my-rosary-let-me-bend-over" territory.

The two helmetless heads look like white women in their 40s, the yelling sister superior head looking particularly war-torn.

Try going outside some more.

This isn't my first as I tried to strip with bleach so it's more like my 30th model compared to my 150th or something ridiculous.
Also this was before my valhallans which I post here sometimes

Lol really nigger? Get the cocks out of your eyes, and the Russian cocks out of your mouth and ass while you're at it.

Why are you so mad about Russians

Most white women in their 40's and older are that ugly. Again, go outside.

I was poking fun at you for calling the kettle black rather than defending the faces of the Russian Bootleg Sisters. It's a moot point anyway, since heads are a worthless argument with the vast amount of third-party female heads that are available.

Russia sisters are still better than SoEM shit when it comes to bootleg SoB by virtue of being SoB.

If we're being realistic instead of waifu-fagging, then women would have man-like faces if they were Sisters of Battle.

look at the jawline on women's mma fighters like cyborg, megan anderson, ashley Evans smith etc.
>>
SoB have boobplate. All this "realism" bullshit you're spouting in an attempt to look like not-a-waifufag is moot.

>sisters of battle need to look like elves instead of battle hardened nuns, which is what gw wants them to look like
fuck off.

I like the boobplate. It's iconic, but there's reasons why not every SoB is going to look like some 14 year old trap.
