hey lads, first time painting minis in about 3-4 years. I'm using mostly acrylic paint as my local hobbystore is closed for some ungodly reason. How am I doing/any suggestions?
Also, what color shall I make the back fin? I have some gold metallic paint, but I dunno if that'll look great. Still got plenty I need to do aside from that

I'd consider making the "gems" or nodules white as well, at the moment the big stark helmet kind of throws off the balance. white tabard could be an alternative as well

My current WIP. Bought a metal Emperor's Champion body from my FLGS for 3 bucks, decided to put some vanguard vet arms on him. Relic blade is a pain, but the white is coming along. A few more thin coats, then accents on the pads and those will be done. Then it's mostly touch up on the joints, finish the Black Blade, and make his shield look pretty.

I might move his arm down a bit as his current pose makes it look like he's contemplating his sword or something

Also, had to crop this image from a 6000x6000 one, so quality may be diminished.
>>
>>54879985
Image is too big to really give a critique. Learn to reduce image size. The paint also looks chipped or dusty, especially around the helmet. Otherwise the coats look thin and it's a nice base.

I used to have half the year to prime in ezmode, now that time is halved again thanks to it being erratically humid all fucking year.

Not pictured: my pile of fuzzy-primed terrain pieces that got wrecked by thunderstorm humidity two minutes after I primed it in clear sunny weather

My painting is even more shit than your so I don't really have a leg to stand on in saying this, but you really need to clean him up.
>>
>>54880730
The green looks a bit sloppy, you should go back and clean up the edges of the armour detail.

Practice makes perfect anon.
>>
>>54880487
I thought it was common military jargon like the 1st of the 506th something like that
>>
>>54880730
You need more layers of yellow to clean that up, don't be surprised if it take 4-5 layers. Which color are you using to prime? You want grey or white for yellow. Yellow is very splotched, are you using a wet pallet or thinning your paints? Rivets need paint, spike on the left leg isn't fully painted. What edge highlights you have way too thick. Edge of the skull on the belt is unpainted as is most of the helmet. Lenses need paint.
>>
>>54878688
Leather maybe, but you'd be hard pressed to pass that off as latex.

Latex is fucking hard to paint and have it look like the material.

It's Lamenters yellow glaze over Rakarth flesh.
I may need to build of the Rakarth a little more.
Black primed, I tried white prime on other models I tested this colour on with and didn't like how it came out. Also all the white primer I've tried on my area comes out fuzzy on the models.
I have a wet pallet, and thinning them.
I do need to touch up little details, but that may be a task for another day when I'm less shakey. Might just work on getting the base colours down first.
Not sure how I want to do the eyes. Trying to go for a wasp look.
Suggestions?
>>
>>54881385
The subject of latex has come up before a number of times, though no real results of things were posted.

You could try gloss varnish over paint, you could try latex paint itself. Either way, test this shit on testmodels or sprue.
>>
>>54881480
Moot Green should look nice for the lenses. You need more layers of yellow, not the color underneath. If you are having trouble keeping your hand steady, I've found having a beer helps. Needs some black if you want it to be a wasp so black bands might work

So far he is essentially like an iconic warrior of old, super capable and super charismatic, but due to his prolonged time fighting within the Warp, his senses have been dulled. The chapter master and chaplain of the fleet based chapter, both war mongering psychopaths of the Dregs Fatalis renegade chapter some people might've heard about in /yourdudes/ threads, carefully manipulate what he hears and says through a clever charade of false info to make him fight for them even though he's ultra dedicated to the Imperium.

>>54881726
I had definitely planned to paint a ring on there. Speaking of black, has anyone tried this Black 2.0 for modeling? It's similar to vantablack and the price isn't awful. Would be cool for his base

I have some. It's much more matte than typical gaming acrylics but you will NOT get the "black hole" effect of Vantablack with it. These examples in this pic and video from other people are typical of my experience.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YW0rJVxnDI0

Trying to do a base of just Black 2.0 doesn't look that great, it's one of the first things I tried. It mostly just looks like an unpainted base.

I am really jealous of your dudes. I am pretty new at this and mine are coming out dumpy and bland so far. I messed up and used a cheap primer spraypaint that left them feeling grainy too. Should I just simple green them and start over?

I saw some poxwalkers with a yellowish look and blackish horns that didn't look too bad at my store if that helps
>>
>>54882331
Looks a little too cartoon-ey, but is a solid attempt. Also tell him to prime his models.

>>54882349
Better in some areas, keep applying more yellow to where it isn't purely yellow. A first layer commonly doesn't give it a perfect covering so it's sometimes a sign of not applying enough layers or paint that's too thick or thin
>>
>>54882331
Needs far more layers of gradient, the transitions between the different shades are far too abrupt. Plus the paint job is honestly just kind of messy (the highlighting on the middle sword). Tell him to get picture of metal weapons and try to reproduce it. If he's beginning or deosn't want to put that much time in painting tell him to use metal paint. NMM is hard and complex to pull off.
>>
>>54882427
Yeah, I saw that too anon. He's mostly just using those to test the effect and stuff (according to him), though I dunno why he didn't thin much there.

>>54881674
You have viable fingerprints all over it. Be prepared to sand, and learn to damp your tools while sculpting.

Also, remember to use subtractive sculpting to clean up things like the sword blade and grip.
>>
>>54882531
Funnily enough I'm sanding right now. I keep my tools and fingers damp, even soaked at times, while sculpting, but I get too impatient waiting for it to dry and start handling the model in other areas, accidentally touching malleable greenstuff in the process

As for the sword I'll try to smooth things out. Don't know how well I can file and sand it but I'll at least try to scrape it with an exacto if needed

>>54882576
Fingers are too oily also absorb water, so they aren't the best tools to use beyond prefab, where you'd then want to use a damp tool to gently polish out the prints.

For subtractive sculpting, it's basically whittling and sanding

One of my favorite tools I accidentally upon is a broken exactoknife blade. You can use the unsharpened corner of the blade to carve very fine lines in cured greenstuff or even plastic.

White should be used only as brightest highlight aka where the metal shines.
Right sword and axe look good in terms of reflections.
Use blue with the midtone grey and add more layers.

How close is Abaddon Black to Chaos Black Primer?
>>

One is matte and one is glossy if I remember it right. You can Chaos Black that and work from it but if you ever have to go back and touch up with Abaddon Black it'll stand out, so it's better to just cover it with a light coat of Abaddon Black anyways

Not sure if I want to do another big conversion for now. Might just saw off the Mk X helmet on the belt, stick an old school helmet on there, and work on my painting speed, since I'm kind of a slow painter. I had wanted to experiment with a vaporwave/Tron like paint scheme so I may do just that. The Tron one would be easy, with it predominately black and bright edge highlights.

Thanks bro glad someone likes it. Still see so much room for improvement. I have every model when they're finished because all you can focus on is the mistakes. Even if someone else can notice it you know yourself every place you fucked up and your eyes immediately zoom to that.

>>54885280
Black primer. Multiple thin layers of death world forest to it's nice and even. Next 50/50 death world forest driad bark paint directly into recesses and battle damage as shadow.
Highlight with death world forest screaming skull 50/50 and a 2nd highlight again with more screaming skull . Final highlight with pure screaming skull.

Also don't be afraid to thin out highlights that are too wide by painting more of the basecoat.

Check out "miniac" on YouTube
He has a brilliant guide which a ripped this scheme strait off.

Ditch the gold shoulder pads and go for bronze like the cowl? The lighting is terrible in the pic, but even in a good light they just don't seem to fit.

I think the seals could do with brightening up too.
>>
>>54885398

That blood splatter is a really nice effect man. Good work.
>>
>>54885420
I like the shoulders a lot.
Reds and seals do require further layering though.
>>
I really like this model but I don't play DW, and my chapter doesn't get its dick sucked hard enough to have any members in such a high rank. Is there any way to make this model work in a regular army as an HQ with a power weapon and bolter or something? He'd have an awful lot of Inquisition I's on him.
>>
>>54885483

Cheers man. The cloak does need a bit of work, especially at the front. Its one of those annoying sculpts where there isn't really much definition to it. No nice deep folds where you can make it pop.

There isn't much around the seals in the way of contrast so I'll just have to exaggerate them a little I think.
>>
>>54885513
Gottas be honest, you're better off using something else. Dude's got Inquisition iconography on almost every piece of armour.
>>
>>54880241
You could do "best of the first" and then translate to Latin. Though admittedly that'd be optimus prime
>>
>>54878770
How did you do the texture on that? Old paintbrush?
>>
>>54885524
Little details/no raised surfaces leaves you room to improve your layering/glazing.
Just try to bring highlights bright as possible.

Painting a plague marine to kill painting fatigue on Blood Angels. Coming along okay I guess, any suggestions?
>>
>>54885699
very nice, maybe a lighter highlight on the shoulder trim like you have on the gorget
>>
>>54885619

I thought that at first, but when you look at the model closely the cowl and the shoulders are like a one-piece thing that drops over his head, with another leather cowl underneath (like a piece of under armour). A flat colour would make them look like football shoulders.

I went for gold for a bit of contrast but now I'm not so sure.
>>
>>54885583

Yup. I think the red might end up having some oranges in there to pick out what little detail there is and then a red glaze to finish.
>>
>>54885712
Yeah I still need to touch up and highlight the arms. Not sold on the green bolster, might go back to black.
>>
I need some ideas for my death guard. Any neat colour schemes? Preferably ones that involve blue.
>>
>>54885513
what chapter? honestly just fluff it out as your HQ got some DW gear for assisting them, or say he's an ordo xenos inquisitor that leads a space marine chapter? who happened to fashion a pole and bolter and power weapon together.

Honestly, I don't know why people get so sorta precise with this kind of thing. it's all power armour at the end of the day right?

The Premium stuff is technically designed for Lexan (ie. the hulls of RC cars), but they work just fine on most primers and plastics.

It's easy enough if you don't got utter butterfingers.
Use some aluminum foil as base, fold a piece couple times over and set it in preferred form (folds and such).
Layer greenstuff over this.

(this is for the free-hanging parts, tabard over model doesn't require anything but gs)

Also let gs cure for 20+mins (depends on your mixture) before detailing and work with wet tools.
Never sculpt anything new over unhardened gs.

contrast anon, learn how to use it.
When you have as much of one primary color as the IW (pure metal), it is of vital importance that you get the most out of it.

Needless to say, I personally think your model lacks depth in the shape of zenintal highlights, this can be achieved with great effect using simple drybrush when working with metal colors.

This picture isn't the best, but it shows clearly how he uses the same color (metal) but still gets a great effect due to darker at the bottom, and brighter on the top.

This isn't doing it for me. Its to random. Its like someone wanted to go blanchitsu only to fall flat because they didn't know what they where doing.

Of course, Im not one to judge you as a painter or hobbyist and you might well prove me wrong with a masterpiece in a few weeks time. But from this picture alone Ill give you my thoughts.

Base (legs + torso) don't match with the remainder of the set. No one this well built would need prosthetic arms and shit for no reason, it looks out of place. This is me saying, had you put the same stuff, using a warhammer Ghoul model as a base (smallish, weakling body type), I would have totally got this.
Second, the equipment that he´s got is also out of place, its to hightech for someone to waltz around with, when you still are wearing blue-jeans and cloth-shoes.
The backpack, its filled with iconography and as you say "useful kit for cables and other tech gubbins"... But for what? What would he use it for?

All in all Id just like to say "less is more". And take in to account, this is just my personal opinion, if you like it its your model and that's what's important!

How can I replicate this bloody river base effect
>>
>>54890623
I've never personally done it but i would assume you should:

>Cut up pieces if plasticard in the shape you want the raised areas

>cover them with astrogranite

>wash several times

>drybrush with a lighter gray

>then paint many thin layers of blood for the blood god in the cracks

many.
Thin.
layers.

Wavy effect created by uneveness in the top layers
>>
>>54890623
>blood for the blood god
>ard coat

The blood effect looks like it was achieved simply using red paint and a varnish.

Vallejo, Army Painter and Secret Weapon minis all have a range of washes.
If you want a blue black wash you can also always just use an empty bottle and mix black and blue washes in whatever ratio you feel is 'a rich, but cold blue-black'.

I'm starting a Vraks militia army and I have a big problem. Paint scheme is like pic related so as you can see there's a heavy amount of browns and greens involved. In the fluff, Vraks is described as a muddy place with lots of rocks which leaves little place for contrast between the fatigues and the bases. How should I base them then? Should I keep the muddy trench theme or would they look boring as fuck?
>>
>>54891979
Astrogranite with plenty of longbeard grey, use small pebbles as larger rocks. Base colour a drab brown, making a one-two brown pop that will work in your favour.
>>
>>54891587

Looks good mang.
Are you going to use transfers, paint some icons or just spam scribble script?
>>
>>54891979
Just make an executive decision.
Green fatigues, metal armor and muddy bases should work.
Or just do the bases rocky or base them like they are in the rubble of imperial ruins.

You used to have to basecoat in silver since the old gold paints were notoriously thin and shitty, the newer ones are better so you can start straight with a gold basecoat and wash if you like. Otherwise layering up from bronze is fine

1. Stop using thick, glossy, enamel(?) paints.
2. Use acrylic unless you know what you are doing.
3. Prime the whole model, that includes the tab attached to the feet.
4. Thin your paints.
5. Thin your paints.
6. If your planning on playing AoS use round bases. Old Fantasy uses square. Using both is strange.
7. Trim the nubs.

Try first building up base as normal (rocks/roads/whatnot) and then covering it with fine sand/flock.
Paint with appropriate colors (dark brown/grey to light).
Maybe even paint the base beforehand, depending on your lore (old/new ash).

Alternatively try some finer snow powders, with aforementioned steps.

>How important is edge highlighting black to keep the mini looking decent?
Pretty important I'd say. Try dark reaper of mechanicus standard grey followed by fenrisian grey.
>>
>>54896346
That's a very sexy looking black btw. Too many people go too dark and leave themselves nowhere to go for shading. Here's a great guide for highlighting black.

I like this one better, but I never was a fan of the asymmetrical stuff, except for DeathWatch.

Both. Have the black and pink as default armour but have the placement of gold panels vary from marine to marine. Maybe one guy has golden pauldrons, another has a golden helmet, and some other guy has both with a golden greave.

I'm trying and failing to do layering and glazing. This poor guy has like 5000 layers on him from just practicing for an hour or so today. Anyone have any magic advice? I was watching a ton of painting buddha videos, he makes it look so easy :(

well if you like em that way then don't bother. I do like world eaters/khorne chaos marines made from those aos minis though.

Buy some glaze medium. Kujo Painting is another great channel for tutorials.

How do I prime metal minis properly?? I have Vallejo surface primer and liquitex gesso. Both of them scratch off the mini really really easily - is this normal??

No rattle cans, just brush priming.
>>
>>54897326
Do you thin them? I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to thin them because they contract as they dry.
>>
>>54897326
I've found Vallejo primer has issue binding to metal.

I haven't had an issue with Krylon or Stylenrez.
>>
>>54897344

I did actually thin them - it didn't cause issues on plastic though.

Vallejo takes too long to cure hard enough to not flake off. Stynlyrez is way better. Dunno what the problem is with Liquitex other than the fact that metal miniatures scratch easily.

Does anyone happen to know if the horus heresy marine pads from FW have the same size as the primaris marine shoulder pads?
