One of my buds and I are doing a one on one campaign soon. I told him that I'd be okay with playing Call of Cthulhu or Dungeons and Dragons 5e since we're doing a one on one campaign. Which is better for a one on one campaign, DnD 5e or CoC? Would FATE be better?Pic sort of related.
D&D is heavily team based.
FATE isn't, so my vote goes there... but basically all tabletop RPGs prefer having 3-4 players.

If those are your only options, I'd say FATE. Were you running a Gung Ho Gun campaign?

Yeah. I want to have him face tons of bad guys and be able to take them all on by himself like John Wick.

That can get boring due to the only back and forth being he goes, then all the goons go. There are some systems, like Cortex Plus, that lump sets of minions into 1 dice pool.

What if all the enemies are one hit kills aside from bosses?I think my friend and I will go with FATE.

Then they won't feel like a threat or even a challenge. It works in vidya because there is a satisfying pay off and it's fast. It works in movies because John Wick has slick skills.
FATE would work out since it's got scene descriptors to activate, and things like that to mix things up from roll a die, kill something.
