It is 1,239 years since the Battle of of Roncevaux Pass, where a large force of Basques ambushed a part of Charlemagne's army in the Pyrenees on the present border between France and Spain, after his invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. As the Franks retreated across the Pyrenees back to France, the rearguard of Frankish lords was cut off, stood its ground, and was wiped out.

In 777, Charlemagne was courted by Sulaiman Ibn al-Arabi, the wali, or governor, of Barcelona. Al-Arabi was keen to form an alliance with Charlemagne, in the hope that such a powerful ally would protect him from invasion. He assured Charlemagne that if the Frankish armies crossed the Pyrenees, they would meet with little resistance and could make considerable gains.

Charlemagne accepted the enticing offer, and marched into the Iberian Peninsula in early 778. His progress, as promised, was swift, and by the spring he had taken the strategically important city of Pamplona. His army continued south, intent on capturing the jewel in the crown, the city of Zaragoza. However, when Charlemagne reached the city his progress was unexpectedly halted. The city governor, Hussain Ibn al-Ansari was in no mood to submit, and vowed to repel any Frankish invasion.

After a tense standoff, during which Charlemagne laid siege to Zaragoza, a deal was eventually struck: Al-Ansari offered a substantial payment of gold, and the release of several prisoners, in return for a Frankish withdrawal. Charlemagne, pleased of an excuse to return to France where a Saxon rebellion was threatened, accepted the deal, and readied his forces for the march northwards.

During the retreat, Charlemagne ordered that the fortifications of Pamplona be destroyed, reducing the threat of it being used as a base to attack the Franks. This antagonised the local population, and can be viewed as a possible cause of the battle the followed.

On the night of 15 August, Charlemagne’s army found itself deep in the Pyrenees, stretched out in a long column as it negotiated the narrow Roncevaux Pass. A rearguard, commanded by Roland, one of Charlemagne’s most trusted military leaders, was tasked with keeping watch for potential enemies. However, notwithstanding the superior strength of the Franks, the rearguard came under surprise attack, and the battle commenced.

The revised version of the Annales Regni reads: 'Having decided to return, [Charlemagne] entered the mountains of the Pyrenees, in whose summits the Vascones had set up an ambush. They attacked the rearguard, causing confusion which spread to all the army. And, while the Franks were superior to the Vascones both in armament and in courage, the roughness of the terrain and the difference in the style of combat made them generally weaker. In this battle were killed the majority of the paladins that the King had placed in command of his forces. The baggage was sacked, and suddenly the enemy vanished, thanks to their knowledge of the terrain. The memory of the injury so produced overshadowed in the King's heart that of the feats done in Hispania.'

It is probable that the attackers consisted of several Basque tribes aggrieved at their treatment during the Frankish invasion. They were familiar with the mountainous terrain, and despite military inferiority, inflicted considerable losses on the exposed rearguard, as well as plundering the gold that had been taken from Zaragoza. Although destroyed, the rearguard, under Roland’s command, managed eventually to repel the Basque attackers, allowing Charlemagne to return to France and ensuring the bulk of the Frankish army remained unscathed. The battle caused numerous losses among the Frankish troops, including several of the most important aristocrats and the sack of the baggage. It was the only significant defeat that Charlemagne ever suffered in his otherwise successful military career.

Over the years, this battle was romanticized by oral tradition into a major conflict between Christians and Muslims although in fact, the Basques of the period were mainly Pagans and Charlemagne had been allied to some of the Muslims. In the tradition, the Basques are replaced by a force of 400,000 Saracens. Although Roland died in the battle with little information about him, the battle popularized him as a chivalric hero of honor in the Middle Ages. The Song of Roland, which commemorates the battle, was written by an unknown poet of the 11th century. It is the earliest surviving of the chansons de geste or epic poems of medieval France in the langue d'oïl, in what would become the French language. Together with the Knights of the Round Table in Britain, the story of Roland and the paladins have become the archetypal icons of chivalry in Europe; greatly influencing knightly culture and inspiring many Christian warriors that came after. During the Battle of Hastings in 1066, knights and soldiers under William the Conqueror, chanted the poem to inspire themselves before their fight with the Anglo-Saxons.

Wargaming Roncevaux Pass could be played in a few ways. You could try the peculiar experience of an early Medieval army fighting guerillas in rugged terrain, struggling to get the baggage train off the board before being overwhelmed. Or you could go the chanson route and make it a heroic affair modelled on the old songs, with a handful of knights holding the pass.

Longbowman vs Crossbowman: Hundred Years’ War 1337-1460 (Osprey Combat 24)

For centuries, the crossbow had played a key role on the battlefields of continental Europe, with mercenaries from Genoa and Brabant in particular filling the ranks of the French army, yet on the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War they came up against a more powerful foe. To master the English longbow was a labour of years, requiring far greater skill to use than the crossbow, but it was much more flexible and formidable, striking fear into the French and their allies. This study examines three battles - Sluys (1340), Crécy (1346) and Poitiers (1356) - and shows how the use of the longbow allowed England's armies to inflict crushing defeats on numerically superior forces. The longbow changed the shape of war, becoming the defining weapon of the age and wreaking havoc upon the French armies that would face it. Featuring full-colour artwork, this is the engrossing story of the first clashes between the English longbowmen and the crossbowmen of the French king on the bloody battlefields of the Hundred Years' War.

I've been reading about 12th and 13th century Finland and the fights they did, it's great, Swedish crusaders (fighting as Vikings), raids by Novgorod. And as far as I see, the period is basically untouched by wargamers. The problem is, I don't have a clue what a Finnish warrior of the period would even look like (pic basically unrelated), any ideas /hwg/?

Also, what's that obscure period/war you to get into?

New Zealand Infantryman vs German Motorcycle Soldier - Greece & Crete 1941 (Osprey Combat 23)

In April 1941, as Churchill strove to counter the German threat to the Balkans, New Zealand troops were hastily committed to combat in the wake of the German invasion of Greece where they would face off against the German Kradschützen - motorcycle troops. Examining three major encounters in detail with the help of maps and contemporary photographs, this lively study shows how the New Zealanders used all their courage and ingenuity to counter the mobile and well-trained motorcycle forces opposing them in the mountains and plains of Greece and Crete. Featuring specially commissioned artwork and drawing upon first-hand accounts, this exciting account pits New Zealand's infantrymen against Germany's motorcycle troops at the height of World War II in the Mediterranean theatre, assessing the origins, doctrine and combat performance of both sides.

"The Confederate and Neo-Confederate Reader" by James Loewen and Edward Sebesta.

It's a collection of PRIMARY documents in which Southern leaders, politicians, and spokesmen all say in 1860/61 that slavery is their primary reason for secession and war followed by a collection of PRIMARY documents from 1865 to 1890 where they all pretend it wasn't about slavery but was about states' rights.

It's a great overview into the proximate cause of the war AND the apologia which sprang up afterward.

But as someone who's very serious about New Zealand in World War 2, that Combat title does an excellent job of covering the lads in Greece/Crete, mainly because it draws upon the mountain of sources we have on the subject
I do like the Combat titles myself, along with Duel, because contextualizing the different sides is much better for wargamer research, and that's all I want from these books
I was waiting for the Longbowman vs Crossbowman one to start some sort of argument though

George Cary Eggleston's Rebel's Recollections is a really good firsthand account.

' Lunching one day with Oliver Johnson, the best "original abolitionist" I ever knew, I submitted to him the question I was debating with myself, namely, whether I might write this little volume of reminiscences without fear of offending excellent people, or, still worse, reanimating prejudices that happily were dying. His reply was, "Write, by all means. Prejudice is the first-born of ignorance, and it never outlives its father. The only thing necessary now to the final burial of the animosity existing between the sections is that the North and the South shall learn to know and understand each other. Anything which contributes to this hastens the day of peace and harmony and brotherly love which every good man longs for." '

Some early internet searching reports this as an urban legend. But clearly General Pershing did SOMETHING that was effective. The President wants us to study it. So now we need some authentic, good sources on this Moro War. Anyone have suggestions?
>>
>>54925484
From my research and talk with a guy that lives in the Phillipines - the Americans actively sought diplomacy with people very influential in the Moro community (the Ottoman Sultan being one of them, but also a retired Moro chieftain which was extremely influential in the area). After that, Pershing served as governor, and tried to make the Moro really believe that the Americans were helping them. For example, the troops that occupied the Moro interior were Phillipine Scouts; seeking to solve supply issues when it came to goods (even pretty vital ones); reformed the judiciary system...

Anyhow, apparently there are reports of the guy just before him (General Tasker H. Bliss) ordering for troops which were attacked by Moros in particularly agressive areas to wrap the dead Moros in pig skin and stuff their mouths with pork; which seemed to be effective - this was reported by Rear Admiral D.P. Mannix, who fought as a lieutenant against them.

Today is Long Tan Day, marking 51 years since the Battle of Long Tan. Fought in a rubber plantation in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, between Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units; and elements of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF) shortly after its lodgement in Phuoc Tuy. 1 ATF began arriving between April and June 1966, constructing a base at Nui Dat which was located astride a major communist transit and resupply route and was close to a Viet Cong base area. After two months it had moved beyond the initial requirements of establishing itself and securing its immediate approaches, beginning operations to open the province. Meanwhile, in response to the threat posed by 1 ATF a force of between 1,500 and 2,500 men from the Viet Cong 275th Regiment, possibly reinforced by at least one North Vietnamese battalion, and D445 Provincial Mobile Battalion, was ordered to move against Nui Dat.

For several weeks Australian signals intelligence (SIGINT) had tracked a radio transmitter from the headquarters of the 275th Regiment moving westwards to a position just north of Long Tan; however, extensive patrolling failed to find the unit. By 16 August the communist force was prepositioned east of the Long Tan rubber plantation, just outside the range of the artillery at Nui Dat. On the night of 16/17 August, Viet Cong mortars, recoilless rifles (RCLs) and artillery heavily bombarded Nui Dat from a position 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east, damaging the base and wounding 24 men, one of whom later died. The Viet Cong positions were then engaged by counter-battery fire and the mortaring ceased. The following morning B Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR) departed Nui Dat to locate the firing points and the direction of the Viet Cong withdrawal. A number of weapon pits were subsequently found, as were the positions of the mortars and RCLs.

D Company took over the pursuit around midday on 18 August. After clashing with a Viet Cong squad in the afternoon and forcing them to withdraw, the Australians were engaged by small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from a flank. Numbering only 108 men, D Company was facing a much larger force. Pinned down, they called for artillery as a monsoon rain began, reducing visibility. Heavy fighting ensued as the advancing battalions of the Viet Cong 275th Regiment attempted to encircle and destroy the Australians. After several hours D Company was nearly out of ammunition, when two UH-1B Iroquois from No. 9 Squadron RAAF arrived overhead to resupply them. Heavily outnumbered but supported by strong artillery fire, D Company held off a regimental assault before a relief force of cavalry and infantry from Nui Dat fought their way through as darkness fell and forced the Viet Cong to withdraw just as they appeared to be preparing for a final assault. Withdrawing to establish a landing zone to evacuate their casualties, the Australians formed a defensive position overnight.

Returning in strength the next day, the Australians swept the area and located a large number of Viet Cong dead. Although initially believing they had suffered a major defeat, as the scale of the Viet Cong's losses were revealed the Australians realised they had actually won a significant victory. Over the next two days they continued to clear the battlefield, uncovering more dead as they did so. Yet with 1 ATF lacking the resources to pursue the withdrawing force, the operation ended on 21 August.

Eighteen Australians were killed and 24 wounded, while the Viet Cong lost at least 245 dead. A decisive Australian victory, Long Tan proved a major local setback for the Viet Cong, indefinitely forestalling an imminent movement against Nui Dat. Although there were other large-scale encounters in later years, 1 ATF was not fundamentally challenged again. The battle established the task force's dominance over the province, and allowed it to pursue operations to restore government authority.

Long Tan is a legendary clash in Aussie military lore. Morrie Stanley, a f/o from the RNZA whose accurate plotting played a crucial part in the victory, represent the Kiwi forces. It's a quintessential kind of Vietnam clash - a frantic stand in the rainsoaked night against a determined onslaught, ending with cavalry both tracked and heliborne coming to save the day. Absolutely perfect subject for a Vietnam wargame.

I honestly can't remember. Might have been. We always have an supply train marker for Ostfront armies (as capturing the supply train can win you the battle no matter the outcome of the game objectives), so its a good excuse to get creative and have some fun. Pasta just seemed right for our Italian friends, especially after the CfNA special rule....

I do plan on doing a Vietnam version of Hind & Seek at some stage - as Vietnam is the quintessential asymmetric modern war and H&S was designed specifically for Asymmetry.
Its still a wee way off though, as I gotta finish this Missile Threat modern air combat game first.
Speaking of which, did a playtest today, the U.S. won the game for the first time, losing a few aircraft but inflicting enough damage on ground targets that the losses didn't matter. They even shot down a MiG-21!

India/Pakistan, Iran/Iraq and Israel/Egypt/Syria.

I've got plenty of stuff for the Arab/Israeli wars, couldn't find much on India/Pakistan or Iran/Iraq. Whats everyone working on right now?

Currently painting up some Dark Age Celts right now in 28mm, not sure if you're supposed to highlight fabric when painting.

Pretty sure airfix or one of that mob of manufacturers does kits specifically for dioramas.

Working on resisting buying 28mm Thirty Years War stuff. No one around me wants to play it, and 28mm is the wrong scale to get the feel right anyway.

Assembling some Daimler Dingoes.

>>55000606
That's a terrible scale for 30YW, don't do it.

I know, I know.

But gosh the models are pretty.

why history remembers him as a count and not a marquis or margrave though, i do not understand. he was lord of the breton marches, not a county.

I've bought a number of the kits and I'm intending to get them painted soon. Alternating between using the minis in ToH, Kings of War, and D&D.

Debating on what color scheme to use, though. Japanese armies in the mid-Sengoku had at least a minor semblance of uniform (at least for the ashigaru) and I'm thinking either green and white or blue and white.

Man, I really wish they did Roman gladiators.

How does it feel to be compared to literal Nazis? Normies gotta ruin everything interesting in history.

I don't have anything appropriate on hand myself, but if you look at the World War One/Osprey folder, you could use the books on the Italian Army and Ottoman Army, as well as the Balkans War title, which would at least help you with the equipment and tactics those armies used.

That particular war had the first bombing attack by an airplane on infantry. Second Lieutenant Giulio Gavotti of the Italian Air Flotilla threw four small 4.5-lb (2-kg) Cipelli grenades over a Turkish camp stationed in Ain Zara, Libya, from his Taube monoplane which was flying at an altitude of 600 ft (185 m). There were no casualties but it caused havoc among the encamped troops.

>been painting my victrix Macedonians for a Seleucid army
>Aventine has said they'll be doing agema and cataphracts for the Seleucids

I'm thinking of doing a pure Aventine Seleucid army instead of using Victrix now but the Victrix miniatures already look great, should I make a Victrix Ptolemaic force?

We don't typically have people like that show up to events, but the officers are being briefed just in case anything does happen.

That being said most of us are kind of appalled about the comparison. Most reenactors that aren't total farbies know that both sides were pretty shit, so we don't try to romanticize it. A lot of guys in my unit are pretty disgusted with the shit that happened in Charlottesville.
We see ourselves as educators, and if people don't want to be educated, that's fine, but don't try to prevent other people who want to be educated from doing so.

The German reenactors, on the other hand, are a whole different bag.

Tell us about the German reenactors.

The best kind, it's like a weird Tom Clancy tier acid trip.

So I'm using Fistful of TOWs for that campaign, is there a Naval equivalent anywhere?

Can anyone speak to the quality of PicoArmor's 3mm range? Is it easy to separate the infantry stands, what is the best method? Is there an idiots guide to painting all this shit?

Sorry for all the questions this is my first foray into micro armor and want to be well educated before hand.
>>
>>55001720
Anon, don't worry about it. That kind of shit kills any kind of plan. Go spend some time with your doggo.
>>
>>55001874
>is there a Naval equivalent anywhere?
Not really, but since you're basing things on a tom-clancy-high-on-DXM setting, Harpoon is clearly your only option
>>
Anyone got a Warlord discount code knocking about?

there is none at this time.
