I've run this exact game OP.

1) Samurai are HUGE fucking assholes. During the SJ they were picture perfect examples of backstabbing cunts and utter faggots. If you looked weak, they attacked you. Even if you were their friend. Especially if you were their friend. Never trust these fucking douchbags.

2) Ninja were bros. You can trust ninja, weirdly. Tokugawa survived a massacre because a group of ninja owed him one and snuck him across the whole island back to his home, even though the reward for turning him over was outstanding.

3) Honor is a tool to manipulate the stupid. See Samurai above.

4) Guns are fucking awesome and everyone loved them. But only Oda Nobunaga really LOVED them. Like, unhealthy otaku level obsession with a loli-chan LOVED them.

5) The Emperor is your God. But the Shogun has an army.

6) Invade Korea. Remove Kimchi.

7) No, really. The Samurai can get fucked mate.

8) Finally, the Sengoku Jidai is filled to bursting with Bad Asses. One determined Samurai can hold off an army. One Buddhist monk can slay Gods. Don't be afraid to let your players try to be awesome. It's very common here.

You joke about this but I have been planning a Rance VI based campaign for a while, the story still works 95% of the time without Rance and his party existing. Still trying to figure out how to trick the party into destroying the generators but I might just resort to having Ainse blow them up if the players don't do it. Urza's story is also still in pencil, I want to avoid putting a DMPC Rance at all costs but I need to get Pentagon into Ice Flame somehow....

Well, it's the most heavily romanticized period, so obviously it is the best for this kind of shit even if the real deal wasn't really like that.
It's practically a mirror of the Chinese sengoku jidai which is also full of badasses and unimaginable feats largely because hey,
people love to hear and read about this shit even if it's not really true.

You'll sadly be missing out on the single cheeriest military march ever made (Yuki no Shingun), but at least you can go full >>54868571 and learn Sakura along the way.

All I wanna play is four foxes who ate the old widow's corpse they used to serve and are now collectively using transformation magic to replace her (and to be a four-tailed fox for the time being already). Meh, Heian period is a best with the usual players who don't know shit about the period. They had what was effectively a warrior's guild-system installed in most of the country, a system of lvl 1 player quests and a system for integrating murderhobos into patronage structures, including structured meant for them to rise through the ranks.

You can ease your usual lvl 1 country bumpking murderhobos into the do's and dont's and slowly expand their horizont as even in-period your usual lvl 1 murderhobo wouldn't actually know shit about anything beyond their local turf.
