Corporations are all but legal entities unto themselves. They don't have their own sovereignty, but they sure think they do, and they're sure trying hard to make it a reality. That's why we dropped the TPP treaty, it would have literally left companies to police themselves with their own courts.

Crops have been replaced with profit margin. Serfs with Employee's. It was much more blatant before the anti-trust laws, when companies could pay you in company script that could only be spent at company stores. People still have the right to move and seek employment freely, technically making them free men. The practical, if not literal, context surrounding these freedoms erode every day. In return for their loyalty to governments they receive tax breaks, grants, and contracts. Said governments blatantly serve such Companies, political capital and influence and bought and sold like elector count votes.

Imho you should really look at what feudalism is. In its core its a personal and not territorial understanding of 'states' and the absence of a strong central power that is able to enforce the law.

So take a collapsing modern state and look at its army.

The army carves out pockets of stability but is unable to keep the whole state together. Time passes and the once rigid chain of command erodes. The HQ actually has no way of enforcing ist orders and instead has to cooperate with the individual units and offer them benefits too.

The individual army units start to economize their holdings (see what I did there), the HQ gets a certain share or tithe in exchange for the high tech that only the HQ produces. Specialists flock to the individual commanders because only they can guarantee a stable environment for their craft. Money becomes entirely worthless and bartering becomes the order of the day. The individual commanders/generals meanwhile start giving their officers holdings because the centralized approach of whole units holding territory is ineffektive and leads to overstretch. The officers get their holdings and have to pay a tithe and educate new recruits on their own.

Some especially strong commanders get uppity and start demanding more freedom. The citizen councils that were in effect at the start of the crisis are becoming weaker and weaker because the generals and the HQ are tightening their control.

After a century or two belonging to the former general staff or officer class becomes a heriditary trait and only the kids of generals and officers can hold commandos. Slowly a new nobility builds without forced and retarded Social darwinism or religiosity.

Now give military ranks a Post apoc treatment and use them as titles of your new nobility. Decide how much tech should be available and voila there is your new feudalism.
