Anybody playing this European dark fantasy game?

Played about half a game some time last year. Group dissolved after maybe a dozen sessions but I enjoyed it while we played.

Anything stand out to you, positive or negative?

I enjoyed it. The flexibility in character creation was nice, since I'm used to more rigid or class-based systems as opposed to being able to pick features to create the character as I'd like. Concerning combat, I had issues that every combat seemed to be either completely unwinnable or a steamroll. A lot of enemies reduced flat damage from attacks you made, so there were times when less combat oriented or more defensive characters could contribute very little, but then one combat character specialising in high offense might smite down an immensely strong enemy with little effort. If you had a defensive enemy and defensive players combats very well might have lasted indefinitely.

The world was super interesting, although we didn't get a huge chance to see it. I'd like to revisit it sometime, maybe playing a more scholarly, less combat oriented type. I rolled with a defensive cleric of sorts, with a mix of holy and martial skills, which was impressively resilient but unfortunately could do little but soak damage and judge barbarians for not worshipping the right god.

Yeah, I heard the mechanics were a bit unbalanced.

Just starting to read the book myself, haven't played it yet, but I love the art and setting.

I've run the intro-campaign:
The Promised land (included in the core book)
Mark of the Beast (Copper crown)
Tomb of Dying Dreams (Copper Crown)
The adventures have decent NPCs and plots, shitty hooks, and ok descriptions. I've had fun running them, but I've added stuff along the way and rewritten entire scenes.

The core mechanic is very simple (d20 roll under stat), and used for most rolls. The Players make *all* the rolls. This combines to a system that's pretty smooth to run, but feels a little tame at times.

Complexity is added through taking abilities. The players need to know the basic rules and how the abilities they chose work, and little else, which means it's easy to learn. There are no classes, but there are some small incentives for taking themed abilities. XP lets you take more abilities, which means high XP characters, while better than no xp characters, are still fundamentally similar. (e.g. you don't get more "hit points", unless you specifically take an ability that increases your toughness)

Combat is based on attack-roll, damage-roll, armor as damage reduction, taking turns like D&D, etc. pretty standard. With possibility of attacks missing AND a possibility of hits being negated by damage reduction means some combat end up going long without being exciting. I'm contemplating introducting 4e style minions to my game to shake things up. On the other end of the scale, some enemies have attacks that can one-hit PCs, which means combat can still be deadly, just not every combat.

The games main strengths are the ART and the setting. The art is well-themed, and tightly directed, so browsing the book gives you an impression on what kind of stories you can tell with this game. The setting has some twists on common fantasy elements that I quite like, I also get a bit of an eastern european vibe from it.

TL.DR.
Modules - playable
Crunch - light
Combat - traditional
Main strength - Art

A good overview, thanks.

Lot of the premade opponents are not strong enough to deal damage to the player, I had to make my own but that was not a problem. Generally you don't have to scale opponents and I like that, and progression is very slow. It is good for fun semi-heroic campaigns, has everything you need. You can easilly add rules from other games to make it more good but it wasn't necesarry. It is a great game to act as a gateway drug, but can be enjoyed by more expirienced people as well. All i all it is a good system that is easy to teach, gives a lot of customatisation and makes the players think twice about starting fights for its brutality and disregard for PC life.
