> Magic is divided into three vague subgroups: fire, wind, and water. In ancient times, there were more types of magic, but when the cataclysm ruined the world, the arcane libraries of yore were destroyed and their knowledge was forever lost, leaving only the simplest rudiments of elementalism.

> Magic is similar to science in the sense that in theory, anyone can learn it, but in practice, only a few talented individuals can hope to master it, and most must suffice with simply being skilled in their field. Mages tend to specialize in a single element, and often gather in isolated towers and fortified vaults of their fellows. Mages tend to have a rivalry with other types of mage, and often look down on mundane commoners.
>>
Because the element of Earth was lost, magic is completely ineffective against metal. Thus, the most efficient way to deal with a mage is

1: Wear metal armor
2: Shove him in a locker
>>
If earth magic disappeared when a library was destroyed I would assume it sucked ass since apparently nobody was using it in a world where literally everyone can use magic
>>
As technology and metal take hold as the dominant force of the world, the mages find work to be increasingly more mundane and low paying. Helping sailors move water or summon wind, or working as a fuel source for machines if you're a fire mage, that sort of low quality, low appreciation jobs.

That is of course, unless you volunteer as an explorer of the Old Realm. It's a weird place for non-mages, so those magic folk are always welcome to chart it out and deal with whatever nasty thing tries to escape from it.

Cold Iron negates all forms of magic.

Because of the ease armored men have defeating mages, chain mail is very popular and full-plate came into being earlier than would be expected.

Not everyone has the time to become a scientist anon, especially when the vast majority are busy working to survive.

>Not everyone has the time to become a scientist anon
How about anyone?
>>
>>54822566

Anyone can study for the years it takes to become a mage, not many can go to a mage's outpost and spend the better part of a decade mastering a questionably useful and increasingly outmoded skill. Now picking up a trick or two on their downtime? Absolutely.

Not him, but if there was an event so destructive it's referred to as The Cataclysm, it probably wiped out a lot of other shit besides just a magical library. Of the surviving population, a handful would have been learned mages; of those, only a fraction would know Earth magic. You can't just rebuild an entire school of thought from a few scattered, ragtag survivors in what amounts to a post-apoc scenario.

Also lost schools of magic are traditions in fantasy settings.

There is a tribe of really strong seapeople of the size of whales that demands sacrifice from a human village in the shore every year. The humans of said village are master alchemists.

Kobold Primarchs.
Kurtulmak wasnt so lost in the maze made by that asshole gnome-god as he was creating a group of sons to make kobold kind great.
When he made the eggs, Garl glistergold teleported the eggs across the land and even to some other planes just because he is this much of an asshole.

>really strong seapeople of the size of whales
So daikaiju? Neat-o. Once a year sounds impossible for a village to keep up with; maybe once every few years?

For the thread: Shields don't exist. Maybe warriors have always been too aggressive to use one. Maybe practical matters dictated the rise and supremacy of two-handed weapons. Maybe no one ever just thought of sticking cover to their arm. For whatever reason, shields do not exist as a piece of equipment or as a concept.
>>
Magic relies on various natural resources [call it ambroisa, quicksilver or whatever]. Some plants and animals eat and process such resources and can be harvested.

The biggest threat to humanity was and continues to be flying creatures--they could be predators along the lines of small drakes or harpies or really big eagles or an enemy race of flying bat/bird/bug-people.

This meant that the only melee weapons worth a damn were long spears, pikes, and polearms. The widespread reliance on these weapons meant that few warriors would have their hands free to take up a shield.
