In my experience, high-quality snacks seem to make players feel like they also have to bring high-quality snacks. More pressure on players to perform IRL for what amounts to a casual hangout leads to more players dropping out because they feel too much effort is required.
On the other hand, cheap beer and shitty chips make everybody feel adequate, no matter what they bring with them.
