Hey fa/tg/uys. One of my friends is DMing 5e for the first time, and he's decided to go for a magical Roaring '20s style setting. My character is going to be a goblin ranger. The only problem is, most ranged weapons in the campaign are going to be guns. I was talking with the DM and suggested replacing the longbow with a revolver, and was wondering if you guys had any ideas regarding a mafia members sniper rifle or other alternatives to a longbow. Thanks.

See if he will let you have a broomhandle mauser, its a pistol, but it can have a stock put on it to be a carbine. The main reason I mention this is because you are a goblin and thus small and a normal rifle will be both big and heavy for you as well as not at all concealable. A broomhandle can be hidden in it's own carbine stock.

/k/ here

Theres some nice lever action repeating rifes with a fat calibre around this time, as well as plenty of revolvers as previously mentioned.

You could also use a cut down muzzle loader.

I do like this idea a lot to be honest.

Could you give me specific examples?

Also, just in general, a less military feel in general would help.

Could you give me examples = I am too lazy to do any research.

Magical roaring 20's? Goblin ranger... Hmm.

1920's, in gun history, means just post-WW1. You've got the older 1890's weapons from spaghetti-western genres (revolvers, revolver carbines, lever-actions, Civil War muzzleloading rifles, break-action shotguns), along with the newer tech from WWI itself (early semi-auto pistols, bolt-action rifles and their bayonets, massive clunky crew-served machineguns, pump-action shotguns -- maybe trenchgun style). Not sure if rifle-grenades and individual mortar systems are a thing yet. Add to that the archetypal gangster weapon, the drum-fed submachinegun. Tommy guns, Stens, whatever. Tiny pistol-caliber rounds, but full auto.

Depends on your take on goblin ranger. Rangers are typically outdoorsman, no? I can imagine a squirrel-huntin', coal-minin', City newcomer who sure knows his way with a sawn-off double-barrel full of birdshot. Rangers are agile fighters, but with a specific grudge on a certain kind of enemy? Goblin bail-bondsman bounty hunter. Little bit Dog the Bounty Hunter, little bit Dirty Harry. Pint-sized smart-mouthed film-noir detective with a giant magnum revolver. Rangers as nature-hippy, counter-culture idealists? Union organizer. Proto-socialist/anarchist. Wants to fuck over the top-hatted capitalists, knows full well how to plant, throw, and craft grenades and bombs and start riots and commit arson to unite the working class. Or maybe a war-profiteer gun-smuggler gobbo mobster who arms these guys, for a pretty nickel? Ranger as sniper?--Like you were saying? Big old muzzleloading sharpshooter, with a klunky gigantic scope up top. I imagine he'd be a bison hunter or something similar from out West. Maybe a well traveled safari-big-game hunter, or Indiana-Jones type. City-slickers would be too easily caught trying to practice with a weapon that big and loud--most likely he got his practice far away from "civilization".

There is a lot written about gangster guns out there. Look it up my dude.

Gangsters wanted concealable guns like pistols and sawed off shotguns, cut down rifles and SMGs.

Stem gun was for WWII and invented in 1940. You have no love of guns.

The main gist of my character is that he basically worked for the mob boss as a kid. Since the bosses dad had a proclivity for keeping exotic animals as a pet, m/c's father took care of them, and I inherited the job due to my whole beast conclave connection. So now, he feeds the mobs hits to the more carnivorous animals in the bosses collection. Seems more reliable than cement boots.

I use the animals I conjure to basically serve as lookouts and scouts. The mafia has eyes everywhere. Literally. Freaky little bird eyes.
