Quick battle report for you guys! I'll just give you the highlights

First game in a very long time; haven't played since 3rd ed.

Showed up to the local GW with my 1000pts/50PL of Dark Eldar and asked if there was anyone about who wanted to show me the ropes and a good fellow brought his Iron Warriors up for the challenge. We played the new scenario for Nethamus, me as attacker and him as defender because it fit our armies.

I both underestimated and overestimated Dark Eldar shooting; a squad of IW in the open evaporated in one turn, but when it came to trying to force them out of the trenches my splinter weapons mostly bounced off them.

My 9 man Reaver squad with Painbringer was MVP, shrugging off bolter fire like it was nothing and eventually taking down the Vindicator. My Archon got to do very Dark Eldar things; taking off the last wound of the Chaos Lord (ie stabbing him in the back when he was wounded) and then tanking a bunch of bolter and plasma fire with his Shadowfield and then running off the table as soon as possible once it failed.

All in all was a fun match and a good reintroduction to the game, looking forward to getting some more in soon. I forgot about Power From Pain all the damn time though; next time I play I'm going to try out my modest Dred Mob list and see how they pan out.

Carbines are superior to Rifles in only two specific situations: When the Strike Team advances, or when they are firing at a target within 18" but over 15"

Since you won't have much need to ever advance the unit with rifles, since they'll almost always be in range of enemies, and that 3" pocket range is ignorably small, rifles are usually the best bet.

It's annoying, I purposely built a FW unit with carbines last edition because I felt my army was becoming a gunline, and people hate playing gunlines. A few other highlights; both my Sslyth got killed by lucky overwatch meltagun shenanigans before they were able to reach combat; my scourges killed one biker and got stomped; the IW player used the strategem that let his Vindicator fire twice in a turn to trash my Raider; I stayed longer on the field than necessary with my Reavers just to take it out in revenge. Speaking of which, the Reavers alternated falling back and shooting their blasters and splinter rifles and other times staying in combat to avoid enemy fire. Definitely MVPs, with a final splinter rifle salvo being all that finished off the Vindicator.

Is there a reason I would want a Leman Russ over a trio of basilisk artillery carriages?

Nearly the same price, more wounds, and can take orders for bring it down in exchange for a 4+ save and a backfield immobile position.

Honestly with their 4+ I would want them tucked in the back anyways. They have a 12 foot range with no minimum anymore, and can even fire it on overwatch if they ever needed to.

I'll just keep the pressure on the midfield with my Chimeras and Centaurs to discourage focusing them out

Warpsmiths can replace bolt pistols with a combi weapon / pistol, nothing else. They come with axe, mechatendrils, meltagun, flamer and frag/krak

Rules question that came up in a recent game
It was SM vs Death Guard and I had a primaris squad in between 2 ruins (red). I moved a stormtalon in front of them to shoot at a target on the other edge of a board, does the Stormtalon base block the Death Guard unit from assaulting? The Stormtalon finish move was more than 1" from the Death Guard and there was no room for models to squeeze round the flyer base.

End victory points was 9 to 5 win for me, but it could have very easily turned into a 7 to 7 draw the way the final round played out, but the simple act of shoving a weak squad back into the Venom and flying it off the board earned me 3 VP a little earlier. Admittedly Dark Eldar have it a bit easier because everything flies and I could just move over units in and out of fights as I wanted, with trukks you'll still need room to move, but its certainly doable.

Eh, 3 power of gaunts can theoretically do 30 wounds in a single round of shooting, a single broodlord can do up to 18 wounds in combat, hive guard can do up to 12 wounds that ignore cover and los lost at 36" range.

A good deal of Alpha Legion is straight Traitor Legion, and they're often characterized by exactly the kind of gear you'd expect off of them.

Alpha Legion isn't directly operating clandestinely alongside or inside loyalist Chapters, although they often place sleeper agents within their ranks (often unknowing to the sleeper agent themselves). They much more often work with and use the uninitiated, Chaos Cultists and other, ultimately disposable mortals to do their dirty work, although pretty much everyone is disposable to the aims of Alpha Legion.

Canon-wise, if Alpha Legion is fighting, they're wearing CSM gear because by that point the trap is sprung and there's no point in hiding. Also, hiding isn't the point since half of Alpha Legion's psychological warfare is based on their own reputation for being Alpha Legion.

Aiming for 1500-2000 point games (and no tournaments). I guess I would lose against the usual spam/tryhard list but I would like something that lets me win "normal" games without using cult troops.
