In a fantasy setting, what are some races that would serve as an interesting long term ally for humans rather then the standard Dwarf, Elf combo?

I was trying to figure out a way to work harpies in as a somewhat normal ally for the humans, but the only way I managed to push em in was by dumbing em down to an almost animal level and having them serve as scouts and messengers to what are basically falconers

So if you do know of some races that could, it'd be nice to see how they'd work with humans in the case of being allies or long time racial "friends"
>>
>>54804543
It could simply be that harpies trade their mobility for roosting in human's towers and even homes for the winter. Harpies could be nomadic flocks that have traditional alliances and grudges with various human factions. Controlling or eradicating groups of them would be critical for wars, and they could be dwindling in numbers but too far removed from their old ways to stop relying on humans.

Never actually thought to make them nomadic, though I guess the whole flying south for the winter thing can tie into that pretty well

I can imagine the humans trying to build better harpy accommodations in an attempt to woo them to their side, a sort of ally cold war between the northern n southern kingdoms
>>
Ratmen who burrow out vast shadow-cities directly underneath human cities of any size. All the human waste and garbage drains down great channels where the ratfolk use it as fertilizer for the fungus from which they make their bread-like staple food. Human cities are consequently the cleanest and healthiest of any surface dwellers, and they house really huge populations.

If you go the fairy tale that happened way in the past route, you can contrive a reason for any two races to be long-term allies

>Prince/princess from [Race A] is stranded in [hostile environment]
>Is saved by member of [Race B]
>Vows never to forget what [Race B] had done for them
>Time passes
>Prince/princess finds out that [Race B] is going through [crippling problem or natural disaster]
>Uses his/her kingdom's resources to save [Race B] from certain doom
>[Race A] and [Race B] were friends ever since

Bonus points for the two races intermarrying between noble houses, and especially for the prince/princess marrying the one that saved them when they were young.

Giant channels leading down into the earth don't appear overnight and if they did people would probably look into where they came from before throwing all their trash and shit in.

I'm thinking the two empires do a great deal of trade. Humans sending down spices, more luxury types foods, cotton and eool, etc. Agricultural products you need sunlight to make, basically. The rats send back ores they've mined and strange semi-magical contraptions they've invented.

The rats need all the run off from cities to tend their little fungus gardens and were used to having to sneak and hide around surface dwellers. Elves murdered them for being disgusting little abominations and the dwaves wanted the surface and underground both.

They were thrilled when they met Humans who were willing to have them around. When the first diplomatic party to openly approach a human town asked what they wanted in exchange for being allowed to live below and have the humans toss their garbage down, the local lord joking replied that it would only be ok if they took the sewage too. Humans have had a reputation for absurd generosity ever since.

Harpies dont have to be dumb to be allies, in fact the smarter the better.

Harpies can fly. That alone gives them an advantage that humans would benefit greatly from their help.

Humans have hands. We can make things harpies cant.

The harpies that trade their services to humans will end up with clothing, trinkets, weapons and armor that other harpies wont have. In return, they act as messengers, scouts, hunters, and explorers. Perhaps even merchants. A flock of harpies might not carry as much as a wagon train, but they can cross the distance faster and easier than by land.

And nothing prevents a harpy from following a wagon or ship if they want to, so they have the best of both worlds there.
>>
>>54804543
Rather than harpies, gargoyles might make more sense? they roost among the roofs and stonework of human cities, acting as security in return for food from homeowners. Of course it does force the humans into a certain gothic aesthetic, so the gargoyles can hide successfully..

A setting I'm working on has the "modern goblin" as a result of other humanoid races taking savage goblin kids and raising them into servents, these pet goblins slowly gained more respect over the years, benafitting from better hygiene,
Diets, and education, meanwhile wild goblins consider these uran gobbos to be weaklings and race traitors
>>
>>54804543
Depends; do they have to be "traditional" fantasy races, or can we get off the beaten track?

For example, Mystara had an empire ruled by Aranea, which are superhumanly intelligent talking giant spiders with an innate affinity for wizardry. The aranea used their magic to help and protect the less generlly-magical humans, and in return humans gave them domesticated livestock and took care of all the things that a bunch of spider-wizards weren't physically adept at doing.
>>
>>54805262
The D&D versions at least are alive, not constructs, besides magical creatures still need to eat (sometimes). They're basically ambush predators, they disguise themselves as statues in order to pounce on prey. The discworld version of gargoyles acted to control the pidgeon population. Maybe they could go with a version that eat rocks, and were conjured up long ago, perhaps by a now fallen magocracy.

Entire races universally being friends with entire other races is silly. At best you have a King who is pals with another King for whatever reason, so you see mixed armies more often, which naturally leads to the respect people typically gain for their companions in a fight, but they always could have who knows what kind of problems of their own popping up on their borders due to cultural or resource issues.

I don't really see how it's hard justifying scattered friendships between any two intelligent, social creatures, even if ones a "monster" that lacks written language or culture and an unsophisticated form of vocal communication. Just have a hunter find a harpy in one of their traps, feels pity for an intelligent creature and ignores the village superstition that harpies are murderous monsters, sets it free, Harpy and Hunter seeing more of each other cause their hunting grounds overlap, eventually it just clicks they could work together for more food, after some initial resistance for the sake of tradition the village picks up on the practice. Village becomes being famous for their Harpy companions, local Lord decides he wants some of that hunting prowess in his ranks during war time, exposing other people to the fact people and harpies can work together in many ways, a few other villages pick up Harpy relations, some are to stuck in their ways to trust each other.

I can imagine a harpy merchant who owns several trucks and will occasionally fly to the city they want to do trade in to let them know they are coming. Then they fly around and check on the status of their trucks and have custom perches for them to sit on so they can chill on the trucks for a bit

I feel like Centaur would be the obvious choice, I'm surprised it isn't even the first response.

And I don't mean in an ironic, "lel rape" sense, but in an actual, "We would probably have a lot in common with Centaurs, more so than Dwarves or Elves and our relationship with them in a fantasy setting would most likely be very personal and complicated."

If anything, I find it confusing why Centaurs are always paired up with ELVES or living in WOODS, Horses don't live in the damn WOODS.

>If anything, I find it confusing why Centaurs are always paired up with ELVES or living in WOODS, Horses don't live in the damn WOODS.
Most RPG writers have never interacted with horses, or most other animals, so they tend to believe that "humans live in plains, all other animals live in forests".

That doesn't sound too weird, what makes you say that? Horses are pretty sexually aggressive and so are Humans.

MALE stablehands get sexually assaulted by female horses all the time- I can only imagine Centaurs would be downright flirty and dirty given their unique chimeric combination of sexually charged species.
>>
>>54804543
In my setting humans and Goblins are closest allies. This goes so far that, despite unions between the races are infertile there is no difference in a social point of view between the races. The live in the same settlements, visit the same schools, celebrate the same holidays and die sude by side in the same battles.

The reason being both races are completely incapable of magic or miracles. Elves see them as primitive savages and Dwarfs as godless misfits, while the other fantasy races at best view them as pitiful.
>>
>>54809180
Yes, pretty much. most races actually are, but these are eldritch horror kinda primordials. They kinda do things real weird. One moment they create ogres made out of randomly placed and sized body parts and the other they create cats.

"Sexually assaulted" isn't really the right term. When a horse gets in heat they like to bump their nethers against pretty much anything, most female mammals in similar situations do. It's just that when dealing with a large animal that typically gets more freedom of movement in their stalls and that you're often dealing with specifically for the purpose of breeding, since thats where all the cash with a horse comes from, the experience of being that thing the mare happens to be bumping into happens a lot more often.

Dwarves and ratmen. The ratmen lived in ancient mines first dug out by the dwarves, and when the dwarves discovered their presence, instead of extermination, they made the ratmen pay rent in servitude. The ratmen, seeing the force of the Dwarven militias, became subservient to the dwarves. Some disaster happened, and the Dwarven king ruled that the ratmen receive equal citizenship. The dwarves now find friendship with ratmen, but secretly it's because they think that ratmen are hilarious as drinking buddies.

The moment you try to find out if Shindol has a Maleficent one in there. You know if it's there it's going to stab you right in the heart but the art would be so good...

I want out of this abusive relationship...

As for the topic at hand, I have humans using various races pretty regularly. Orcs / Minotaurs make great muscle, plus the former has a rather ridged might makes boss social structure so as long as you are stronger then their strongest they will unquestionably follow your orders to the letter and then some, and would only challenge if they feel you are lacking. Minotaurs are significantly more... simple, they get food and a roof, they could care less what you have them do. Even before humans picked them up they had Orcs / Goblins manage them while they just did what they were told and let them work out the logistics of it.

Also Goblins are used based on their "tribe". More feral ones have huge birth rates and are used as expendables, either as breakwater troops in the front or suicide bombers. Even other goblin clans will use them to deposit / use explosives just where they need them in mining. More city types call themselves clans and sort themselves by guild however, and they do all the thievery, assassations, smuggling, and delivery. Humans generally can't get into those fields (aside from small time) due to sharp negotiation tactics. They really like shiny things as a race, and took well to human coins. As for humans, they like the gobbo's cause having expendables are always good, and their ability to navigate cities / get exactly what you "need" is unparalleled. Plus they generally have rules and enforce them well and throw in the Orcs on the other side doing police work and cities become significantly more calm then many other races.

Seriously, I have no desire whatsoever to have more adventures in the further, fucked future of the setting that offers nothing really unique; if we're ever going back there, I just want to re-tell the War of the Lance, in a way that makes sense, isn't railroad-y, and incorporates all the extra people they've added to the world (like Tinker Gnomes and, apparently, centaurs.)

Ackshually....

Things are like this because everyone was copying notes off of everyone, and no one bothered reading more than a few lines of each other's notebook.

The Japanese think that kobolds are dogs because of a line in their first edition DnD manual that described them as having "dog like faces". At the time, And was entirely fan translated, and the translators didn't speak English well, and interpreted this to mean "dog people". This is also the reason Japanese people think orcs are pig people. Poor translation of DnD books basically formed the majority of Japanese exclusive fantasy tropes.

The trend of Kobolds being portrayed as lizard people started with DnD manuals mentioning that kobolds believed they had dragon blood, or dragon lineage. Eventually this deteriorated into "kobolds are tiny dragon people descended from actual dragons."

Picture of an adorable ratto unrelated.

My current homebrew setting has gnolls as less allies and more like somewhat civilized scavengers. They hang outside or near human settlements in their own little shanty slums or take over abandoned buildings. They have a habit of raiding humans when hungry and out of money, which makes them a bit of a nuisance. On the upside, they're excellent short-term workers - their lazy natures make them unsuited for long-term contracts, but give them a clear goal with a decent reward and they get shit done quickly. There's no need for temp worker agencies when finding the nearest group of gnolls will do.

>it'd be nice to see how they'd work with humans in the case of being allies or long time racial "friends"

Goblins. Keep them more or less as we know them (manic, easily frightened, surprisingly crafty, only sporadically interested in self-preservation, etc.) but on friendly terms with humans willing to help construct cities by getting into areas too small for a standard human, act as pest control by eating rats/bugs, and just be the main force of menial labor due to their ability to procreate quickly and limited capacity for knowledge. The story behind all this could be that long ago a great human kingdom freed the goblins from their cruel orc/hobgoblin/whatever brutish oppressors and gave the goblins some land.

Flumphs. Yeah it is D&D based but you could tailor it to any game where a place as wretched as the Underdark exists. Finding themselves in the hostile not!Underdark humanity was struggling until they came across a race of small seemingly harmless floating creatures. These creatures, who called themselves "Flumphs", turned-out to be of kind disposition and revealed to humanity that they survive within the dark underground depths by feeding off of energy radiated by the thoughts of mortal beings. This shocked those people who met the Flumphs as before man had only previously thought a few among their race could project energy with their minds. The Flumphs went on to explain that the way they feed also allowed them to tell where any relatively nearby creature capable of thought was even if they were unable to be seen with ones eyes. Man offered to show the Flumphs the surface world claiming it lacked most of the hazards the Flumphs faced in the depths and the Flumphs accepted the offer. Since then Flumphs have had societies above ground working closely with their human allies aiding them both emotionally/psychologically and also in exploring the world as the Flumphs' ability to detect thinking creatures has proven invaluable.

>I mean you made em, you fucked em into existence
Doesn't mean you can't be disappointed with the result. Rejection by ones creator is an interesting theme in stories: the Bible (kicked out of paradise, regardless of the creator offering reconciliation, strikes me as rejection), Frankenstein, Dragonlance (Gully Dwarves), a good number of Ridley Scott's works, etc.

>Centaurs
Relatively low population because of the need for more food to keep each one alive. Nomadic by nature due to aforementioned grazing habits. Humans, being smaller and more able to live in tight quarters (urban) make cities and advance in terms of weapons and armor. Some time in the recent past, a small human(or better yet, dwarf) kingdom on the edge of being erradicated by it's more populus orcish neighbors befriends the centaurs in their lands to arm, armor, and train them as elite shock cavalry and managed to hold off the Invaders. Thereafter the centaurs became the loyal warrior caste of the kingdom.

>Half-orc/corrupted
Humans, because they are the most secular of the traditional fantasy races act as natural guardians, taking in the corrupted who are being purged from the kingdoms of elves and orks alike.

>Mouse-men
Act as informants to the human nobility in urban areas, a fly on every wall

>Faeries
Humans (or elves) guard their sacred groves from incursion in exchange for useful herbs and sacred fruit (various sacred fruit effects could dramatically alter the political dynamics between the races)

>Golems
Dwarves see them as lower life forms and are genociding them for their magical life crystals. Humans see them as equals and rush to their aid.

The bat people, after a vampire scare that is best forgotten for the sake of everyone, carve out a niche acquiring the blood drained from slaughtered livestock. They tend to work as undertakers.

M E R M A I D S

They're perfect allies for humans in coastal areas. They live near eachother, but their domains are radically different enough to not cause competition. They can both trade resources the other has no other means of accessing (mermaids offer humans such things as pearls, caviar, mutant-like deep sea fish and humans offer mermaids such things as bronzeworking, meat and grain). They can even mutually assist one another in war (imagine human trade ships being escorted by a guard of mermen, or a human navy supported by mermen saboteurs who drill/poke holes into enemy ships, at the very least forcing the enemy to divide their attention).

If someone like you and wants to fuck you, what do morals have to do with anything? So long as they're sapient and not currently in a relationship with someone else, it's all good! And if they want to sell themselves, well at the very least they are earning money for themselves and making someone who normally wouldn't be getting any happy.

Wolves legit hunting in packs, staying back until they had a sizable group or you were distracted.

Not defending communism but its hard to verify if it would work or not when half of the world is boycotting it, geopolitics is biased and countries would likely shun ideologies that go aginst them.

NK's system is not the proof that it works or not, only that system will pressure it to be more like them (democratic and captalist) and will sanction the fuck outta them.

Given that both China and the Soviet Union were communist at the same time, as well as Indochina and select regimes in Africa and Latin America, I think it's safe to say that at the height of communism roughly as many people lived under communist rule as under capitalist rule.

They were never (other than today) in an "us vs everybody else" situation. That's Revolutionary France, based on classical liberalism. You know, the system that took Europe by storm some decades later? So much for the "you're not getting a fair chance if everyone boycotts and shuns you" argument.

Don't want to be too /pol/ or /sci/ here, but there are some pretty good indications that promiscuous sex (especially involving rocky relationships and rejection) can pretty quickly wear down a person's capacity to be loyal to future partners. Partner loyalty and monogamous relationships leading to nuclear families of two parents and one or more children tend to produce offspring with the lowest rates of criminal or otherwise abnormal behavior.

The soviets fucked the country and had to rebuild in isolation after WW2 was over, China and the USSR weren't exactly the best of friends, communist countries declared war on each other, it would be like UK and France fighting yet again, even after the times of the EU and .

For an example, North Korea has sanctions up the ass, not saying they are the cause, but part of a cycle that feeds itself, I grew in a commie contry,I don't like it, but Its not because captalism is some magic system free of flaws, its because geopolitcs. DIdn't escalate to fullwar, but people got killed.

China and USSR had a commie cold war among each other, it was a struggle to see if China or the USSR would be topdog, a reason why China didn't join the USSR was because some say it would be China in all but name, either way, the folks of NATO didn't had as much internal mandrama.

There's also the KHmer Rouge,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambodian%E2%80%93Vietnamese_War

> Then, in May 1975, the newly formed Democratic Kampuchea, dominated by the Khmer Rouge, began attacking Vietnam, beginning with an attack on the Vietnamese island of Phú Quốc.

> By the end of 1978, Vietnamese leaders decided to remove the Khmer Rouge-dominated regime of Democratic Kampuchea, perceiving it as being pro-Chinese and too hostile towards Vietnam. On 25 December 1978, 150,000 Vietnamese troops invaded Democratic Kampuchea and overran the Kampuchean Revolutionary Army in just two weeks. On 8 January 1979, the pro-Vietnamese People's Republic of Kampuchea (PRK) was established in Phnom Penh, marking the beginning of a ten-year Vietnamese occupation.

Despite it's name, Democratic Kampuchea was totalitarian Maoist.

The thing about "communist revolution" is they imagine all of the world coming together to share in the single Enlightened Advanced Cultured, casting down the old ones that are less perfect.

However, exactly which cultural interpretation of The Revolution is supposed to become humanity's default culture to ascend to enlightenment with changes depending on if the "workers paradise" is Hispanic, Chinese, Slavic or African.

So instead of coming together and just being communists, they all vye to be the top dog among communists and make the others fall in line to their vision.

Because communism is inherently a form of fascism by way of doctrine and whom writes and enforces said doctrine. A form of cultural supremacy and imperialism intended on eliminating competition, excommunicating competing governments that won't bow down to be subserviant.

That said, I always imagine magical animals entering into pacts with humanity. Villages holding policies not to kill the magical deer or rabbits. Which because of natural selection would eventually mean more of those animals become magical by default. So you'd have villages where it's a bit like a Disney Princess situation, with sapient friendly birds and wolves

Harpies are unisex and require humans to reproduce. Elf and dorf DNA are compatible, but the elves are all too angsty over thier different lifespans and value long-term relationships far more. Dorfs are too prudish and consider relations with birb people to be degenerate. Humans hit that sweet spot with their *ahem* "open-mindedness" and comprable lifespans.

Of course that's a bit too magical realm for some. And yes, I have been watching Monster Musume. Papi is best monster girl

Nice projection there. If anything the Americans hate the French since 2003 (if not earlier).

Much like the Americans only decided to get involved in Europe in 1944 because they were more than eager to see Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union ruin eachother? It's almost as if politics is based on pragmatism or something, yet that doesn't stop Americans from demanding to be treated like royalty in Europe.

I remember a colonel I knew telling a story about that incident. Supposedly, when the Chinese crossed the border and murdered Soviet border guards, the commanding officer of the nearby military base tried to contact his superiors to report it and receive orders, but they would not answer. Phones were not picked up, radio was silent. They knew what was happening, of course, and they did not want to be responsible for anything that happens.
So the commander is the highest authority there is. He already has a few guys under his command murdered. And he hears the vehicle engines working over the river on the Chinese land, a lot of them. They are obviously concentrating forces near the border. He has to decide what to do, and anything that happens would be later blamed on him. Chinese can very well use any retaliations as a cause to start a war. Or they might start a war as it is.
So the man ordered his people to bombard the Chinese forces. They do. Chinese go quiet, engines die out, not a sign of an incoming attack. The commanding officer is now able to successfully contact his superiors and reports to them what happened.
If Chinese demand any retribution, all the responsibility would be shifted on him, he will be judged and likely sentenced to death. He knows it.
Chinese never bring the subject up.

The fact that your government will execute you if you've done enough of it. They've been doing this for a long time, and if everyone is poisoning each others food, then theres literally nothing you can do about it other than stop selling poison yourself. Kant philosophy, basic shit about functioning societies, if you do unto others you can expect it done unto you.

Hey if they are 'smart' enough to accept that all the products everyone else produces is basically shoddy and might kill them, and they like it more power to them, but I doubt that they are farsighted as a whole at all to recognize they are ruining their own society.

You're basically calling criminals smart and pragmatic for finding ways to earn money, its not as if these people get away with it, its just that more and more of them keep doing it and keep getting punished and more sprout up to do it anyway.

Also it wouldn't make them less stupid and greedy, everyone needs to eat and purchase things from each other and if the only way to avoid getting swindled is to produce everything yourself, congratulations society has reached a full collapse, and the Chinese just become self-reliant apocalypse loners.
