What are some cool modern races that could inhabit floating islands? How would they procure food? Would they survive only on piracy?
What about underwater races with no gills? Mermaids are easy but what about races that have to build air bubbles to survive? What would they eat? How would they related to modern day USA navy?

The pic in OP is from a man that made a floating island out of 100 000 plastic bottles.

And how it looks inside: Extremely cramped, but cozy.

First candidates for floating island race are picrelated.
Small = require little food
Tropic island food.
Basically goblins. And in modern day they would all be using solar panels and AK-47.

>Kame House
They are selling floating islands.
Unfortunately they are designed for wetlands and you can't brave the seas with them.
Floating island require no race. They are the race.
Carnivorous treacherous plant race.
Their structural skeleton is made out of bones of people they eat.

Spiders.

The island itself is mainly a huge mangrove with hollow roots providing buoancy. It becomes a framework for the web. The spiders know where to bite to drink fresh water from the wood and how to collect the leftover salt filtrated by the mangrove. The submerged portion of the web is huge, a biome from which they harvest algae and crabs. It can also capture fishes like a net.
The mangrove benefits from having guardians, fertilizer and a species dedicated to spread its seeds. Some floating islands are made of many interwined mangroves, further bound by web. Those actually acquire a thin layer of soil.
>Would they survive only on piracy?
Survive, no. The question is how to prosper. That may require piracy.

They don't eat humans though, because we are the symbiotic species that keeps them clean from parasites. And we hunt down and kill the herbivorous species that would normally eat the island plants. Like sea urchins and marine iguanas, etc.

Neat. Spiders are great.
Some time ago tg was thinking about doing a spider civilization. Did it go anywhere?
What would happen to a floating island in the storms? How big it should be to sustain a population and resist storms?
Islands made of reed exist since the Inca times.
They need to add reed every 3 month and after 30 years change the island completely but it exist and it works.
Now I imagine those sentient spiders hating the plastic pollution of their oceans and attacking ships.

I don't know. I came up with this spider idea just in this thread.
