I'm confused by your confusion.
Finally getting into painting and have been trying some colors out on a spare sprue my friend let me have instead of ruining any of my models not knowing what I'm doing.
While the color I was trying to replicate was that Marine in the top left I put in, I think that the color of Loren Forest with Biel Tan green over it looks very nice, and might be what I end up using. What do you guys think?
I have a few questions though.
Are my paints not thin enough? It doesn't seem like my base coat really effected the end color, my layer paints over the grey primer look mostly the same as the layer paints over Waagh Flesh does. Is that like a paint thing or what?
Is there a way to make washes go on evenly? I noticed even on this small scale, it's a little hard to make the color of the wash go over completely smooth and you'll end up with a kind of marbled look from it. Which I feel would be fine on smaller models like Marines, but on larger things like Dreadnoughts and vehicles it might not come across as well.
Is there a way to get primer on better? Is it just that I'm using cheap primer, or that it was somewhat humid today (but not terrible, or hot weather, it had rained earlier today though) but my primer just feels like it's a little like dusty or grainy when it goes on the plastic.
>>54737688

>>54738303
https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/Downloads/CitadelPaintingSystem.pdf
use this chart my little niglet. It has a variety of green recipes on it.
Your paints look pretty thin nigga, using a colored under or basecoat is mostly to make it easy to get an even topcoat, unless doing glazes or the like. A darker undercoat will tend to darken the model a bit though, and show less if you happen to miss like an armpit or something with your layer paint.
Washes are tricky. Less on your brush is the key. You dont want to slop that shit all over the model, you want control. Ideally you just carefully apply it to the recessed areas. Marines are easy to wasy since their armor breaks them into parts. Wash one foot, then one lower leg, then one thigh etc. The smaller area you can wash complete the more fucking uniform the shit fucking looks nigga.
Thoughts?

So, in regards to recast resin modeling, from a total outsider's perspective, what will I need? I've looked at the Forge World guide to normal modeling and this is what I've come up with. I've got a few questions about some of these items.

Reposting from last night. Did up the Dark imperium death guard, now wildly annoyed that it only comes with a single plasma gun after a game today. Also super quick alpha legion color test on the side. I'm debating turning the white armor of my army to Alpha Legion colors, but most likely not. Maybe rubric marines later in the color. try to basecoat it and work from there? its like any other model in a way. Kinda like painting vehicles, where blending is harder, as are highlighting, but its not a huge deal. but you should have probably practiced before accepting a commission. You can look on putty and paint to see examples of bigger models to get some inspiration. busts are also a lot easier with an airbrush.

Night Lords Anon here again. The colors in the picture are kind of fucked because the red doesn't show right in the lenses and on the aspiring champion's chest, which I painted red to mimic the NL symbol since there was already a skull there. It felt fitting. Next are the bases, Bf then I'll get to work on the arms and finally the plasma gun. I'm putting those off because I don't feel like cleaning my combi-plasma since they're resin, and there's a slight possibility that my axe upgrades will be, though very unlikely. Still, I might keep the claws since they're a point cheaper as of the Codex, but we'll see.

My first ever FW model, Asterion Moloc & Ivanus Enkomi has arrived.
How do I work on them? They're a lot softer than GW models I've handled and there's a lot of clean up work to do.
Plastic glue or super glue? Wash before prime? How well does it handle stripping?
Started building my Redemptor yesterday.
Quite advanced kit, very impressive. More posability than the Forge World contemptor and Leviathan kits, which is really saying something.
>>54743237
heres the lowdown:
first, give them a gentle scrubbing in some warm soapy water to remove the mold-release chemical they spray it with. otherwise your paint will flake off.
secondly, you need to remove all the bits of flash and sprue. because of the nature of resin, you may want to soak it in warm water so when you clip it it doesnt crack. i learned the hard way and snapped a kriegs cloak right off.
wear a mask when filing, sanding or even clipping. resin is highly toxic.
superglue only, polycement will not work.
i havent had problems stripping them but dont let them soak in any chemicals too long, or they tend to go bendy and stay that way. no longer than an hour in spirits or 24 hrs in a cleaner like dettol.

Are there any tricks to do easy faces without just a slap of fleshtone and some wash?
>>54744751
Faces are never easy and you should not disregard the fleshtone + wash, because it's an important first step.
You go basecoat -> wash -> highlights -> extreme highlights and if you don't want it to end in madness, don't paint eyes.
You can either glaze or stiple brown/ grey for beards and stubble and do eyebrows and it'll work just fine.
I'm sick and tired of seeing all those cancer patients without eyebrows and hair everywhere.
>>54743581

Buried in there were some old unpainted Paranoia minis. Or what was left of them. They were caked in shit which I thought was just grime they'd accumulated over the years, I brushed it off and what was left was like something out of Pompeii.

There's a pot of brown paint on the table, which is the closest colour to the gold on the shield. I believe confused anon thinks the brown came out gold somehow, instead of the 'brown' paint on the table being gold.

>>54746387
>if it was gold then why not just paint it gold
Anon this general can sometimes be a harsh and mean place full of critics and meanies but you still gotta learn what an undercoat is you fucking mong.
Many paints are slightly transparent which means the color under it is very important in the overall appearance of your finished mini
>>54746387
Because certain colours cover other certain colours better than others. A brown base colour makes gold look better. But yeah if you're happy then whatever, there's no great reason why your paint job should have been frustrating, you've only done the most basic of steps.
>>54746449
>>54741864
Ah, yes, Salamanders.
>>54746482
You're right. My laziness in not under coating is something I shouldn't get snippy at other people for when they critique it.

*SMACKS LIPS*
>>54746573
No worries mate. We're shooting past the main point though I think. Namely why you'd consider an obvious, easily accessible detail like that gold ornament tedious or complicated. bad brushes? Shaky hands?
I'm looking to convert a tau earth caste worker for a count-as for one of those monkey niggas the Inquisition gets. Can anyone suggest a good base model? I'm not sure if other castes are allowed to wear armour or if I have to convert something wearing a t shirt or what.
>>54746676
Mong is one of the better insults in the world imo.
>>54746724
Shaky hands. It's a bit concerning since my Grandpa got diagnosed with some form of Parkinson's a few years ago but i only shake when doing something really tedious like threading a needle, untying really small knots or painting really fine details.

Is it OK to hotglue a WIP?
>>54746951

>>54746951
Depends. Is the hotglue used as an expression of your carnal desires or do you want to, you know, glue shit.
Because I'm fine with either.
>>54746951
Only if it's a Slaanneshi model.
That way it'll give you better results on the tabletop.

Shave the nose off of a beardless dwarf model?
When should I be worried about breathing in shit? I've heard wear a mask when working with resin or using an airbrush. Are there any other situations? Also who outside of FW uses resin for models?
>>54747458
Supposedly the realease agent from both companies can be harmful so you should wear a mask when cleaning your sprues.
In practice very few people ever wears masks.
I made another Book Club Sternguard
My greenstuffing is pretty mediocre but I'll file that page flat when it dries
>>54747519
I see, so it's more of a "Please don't sue us" than an actual risk?
>>54747586
I get careful around FW resin but that's about as far as I go.
>>54747458
Use at least a dust mask if not an actual half mask if dry-sanding/ scraping resin - or anything else for that matter. Pulmonary fibrosis isn't fun and can be avoided easily.
Use a half mask certified for organics and solvents when priming or spraying and ideally during heavy airbrush use but realistically most people just use one of those shit paper masks while airbrushing anyway.

Progress on some terrain made out of a badly abused land raider i Got some years back on ebay . I Tried to strip the paint But underneath it all was all sorts of holes, dents and some sort of filler material in the large holes.

im planning on painting it as a grey knights vehicle since me and the buddies have a lot of Daemon/chaos forces and it would fit with the theme. if so then i could flick some Blood for the blood god paint onto the insides as well with some silver power armor fragments.
heres a top pic so the shape is more obvious.

>>54751445

>>54751375
Gorgeous!
>>54751478
I started by tearing it into the two side assemblies, the roof, the front doors and the floor. then sawed one side assembly in half.
Then i took my sprue clipper and clipped/tore at all the sawed edges so it looked like it was blown to pieces. the front assembly parts i also just tore to pieces, warped them and then put them back onto the reconstructed land raider. i also took some engine-looking parts and put them into the cavities in the side assemblies so it didnt look all hollow in there.
The cracked floor below is from a "battlefield in
a box" set of craters that i glued the land raider onto so it would fit seamless onto my battle mat that has the same color as the edges of the craters.
>>54751445
what did you use on base? Cork for rocks? I'm curious about ice and that black rock in front
>>54751667
Cork for Rocks, black rock at the front is a small piece of slate, the ice was made by holding a spare flying stem over a candle until it gets soft and pulling it apart... so it gets really thin and clipping it off! (really simple)

>>54749463
>Im going to try doing a checkered foot fading upwards into yellow around calf level.
That sounds like an awful place for checkers to be.
>>54752421
Looks like khorne red or maybe shaded
>>54752751
Start with milliput. Make a flat area the shape of the knight's foot and a slightly raised ridge around it. Build up an uneven slope outside the ridge. Use a modelling tool to cut cracks into it, radiating out from the centre.
Let it dry. Then apply PVA glue to the surface. Lay down lines of it with a brush in a star shape centred on the impact zone. Drop sand onto the glue, then tap it off. Let that layer dry and do the same again. After doing this a few times you should have sand all over the base with a visible 'grain' making a blast pattern.
Probably best to test this on some card or something, because getting it to look just right will take some practise.
Also, you can add extra detail, like big bits of debris gouging paths out, finer sand nearer the impact site with larger pieces thrown further and so on.
Ideally, try to find or make some real-world examples. Go stamp in some sand and see what the result looks like. Research from life often gives better results than copying someone else's idea of what it should look like.
>>54740444
The only vallejo metallics I've got are their airbrush ones; brassy brass, bright bronze, chainmail silver and chrome. They are about as shiny as the GW equivalent and actually seem to have finer metal particles in them, because I can't really see individual ones while they are just about visible in my citadel paints.
Generally, for non-airbrush metallics I would use citadel anyway because you often want to drybrush them and it's easier to do that if you can just dip the brush right into the pot.
Hey /wip/ thoughts on my second nid ever? For the first I went for a much darker blue skin colour and it was pretty terrible. I am personally happier with this, I feel that my next steps are to sort out the shades so they are thinner and straighter and maybe in the future do something with the wings. Anything else I am missing as a beginner?

Thanks,
I've been looking at videos, only sand near me is in Playgrounds and a mid-20s guys stomping around in a sandbox for children is a great way to have the police called.
Can't believe I didn't think of miliput, my idea was using card to somehow cut a pattern then use glue to attach sand. yours is much better
Working on my own homebrew Chapter of Space Marines.
I wanted to go for something like the Space Shark/Carcharodons Astra, but didn't want to do all grey, and they like MK6 armour a lot. They will be a Primaris Ultima Founding Chapter made to preform a similar roll to the older Space Sharks.
I'm also an 80's kid and love GI Joe's Cobra forces. While emulating their look, I didn't want to completely rip the Cobra icon, so went with this instead (maintaining an 80's vibe).

Stormhawk's in a painting competition this week. Can't wait to run all these green muhreens together
>>54756150
The compressor in >>54753899 mentions an "oil-free pump". What is the ultimate purpose of a moisture trap, and does that feature have any relation to it?
>>54756265
When its dry like that you gotta stick a washer/marble in the pot and shake that mother lover. Typically mashes up the smaller chunks.
>>54756326
That means oil won't contaminate your air supply because the engine is built with longer lasting lube and separates the oil in the compressor. There IS oil so it's not "oil-free" it just means you will never get oil in your air and won't have to do maintenance on the compressor like you would a car, although the compressor will take more of a beating due to not being regularly oil changed.
The moisture trap, or water trap, or moisture/water filter is to prevent the water condensation in the air inside from getting into your airbrush and interrupting your work, because the compressor gets hot as it works and creates moisture inside the air it's feeding you. Larger compressors, compressors with better heatsinks, longer hoses all help reduce this but the easiest way is to just stick a water trap on.
