Whats is your take on animal companions /tg/?

I let players know OOC that their animal companions/pets won't die unless their players want them to, and magically bonded animal companions can share HP with their master.

They give commands/pointers, I play the animal companion as an npc following their orders. I take a bit of liberty when I know what they want to tell it but they say it wrong though, don't want to too strict with that shit.

Should clarify that "They" refers to my players, and "I" to me, the GM.

Big, black labradors are by far the best doggos around. When I see them, I just feel the urge to pet and cuddle them. it's doggos like them that make life worth living.

my ranger fucks them, of course.

Useless coward that at best can sniff an enemy if the wind is favorable, hide slightly before the ambush and is otherwise invincible through hiding, or a useful beast that can track, hunt, attack, understand many commands and has its char sheet and a HP value, and all that implies. Up to players' choice.

usualy like in real-life with hunting dogs, but the moment a magical bond comes into play they start to gain sapience and intelligence bit by bit.
Additionaly, they gain physical changes to make them sturdier, use magic or even opposable thumbs + being bipedal. By the end of it, they completely turn into magical familiars
