As a fencer as well, I can say that it's not a spectator sport. It's fun to do, but watching it can get tedious and boring, even if you understand the sport, simply because a lot of the speed and subtleties just can't be experienced by anyone except the fencers.

If author decides that a toothpick he wants to character to strike doublehandedly with and it should split open whole building - it will and it may be done in the same way, with same movements and "camera shot" as if the character would wield a ridiculously huge weapon. The physical aspect really is up to author or the reader/viewer - a smaller sword cutting through may suggest some supersharpness, for example. I agree there's certain peculiar imprssion a big weapon makes - but it's associated with just one set of traits, that brutal "hulk smash" damage of a wrecking ball. It's not encessary though for the sake of dyamics or feeling of power since again, superquick, supersharp slash will be awesome in its own right and to no lesser degree.

For example, the stereotypical edgy animation when character grabs his katana, pull it a few centimeters out, there's abstract slash animation, some line drawn on some big rock and then he pushes it back in while the rock the line was drawn on explodes into rubble - it's a mainstay, very dependant on personal taste but overall such subjectivity aside in no way worse to underline awesome and deadly potential of a weapon than if it'd be a huge steel beam of death.
