I did a setting like this once. A big desert setting with an ancient egypt meets old west feel. All the ruins scattered throughout the desert were put there by ancient snake mages.

Underground, and not just in the Dwarven ruins sort of way. Expect it to be like an anthive or a frog warren. Use 3D space in convoluted twisty ways that make sense, to snakes, but are impractical for mammals.

I'd imagine defenses would consist of sinkholes from the surface leading to snake dens, or strategic chokepoints for entry (or food collection)
