I do get where you're coming from, not least because that has literally been my local store for the last few months. Even the damned BA and GK players have Guillimen, and I can't do SHIT about them until I buy some Electro-priests. He should either be 600 points or get nerfed to the point where he's not three times as good as a Knight for 2/3 the cost.

Still, for some armies a NC is pretty much mandatory. Admech need Cawl, for instance, or they can't shoot for shit because the Index gutted their buffs.
Are you chill with people converting their own counts-as characters to lead their armies, with different models and fluff? Because that has been my recourse whenever I see a cool thing I can't take in Admech, make a counts-as and ally it in. Do that, makes your otherwise unfluffy army a bunch cooler.

Yeah, Most Waac necron lists forgo 20 warrior blobs in favour of 10 Immortals because they put out almost the same damage for 3/4 the cost. They are a little less survivable though.
They also Tesla on 5+ with the Overlord buff; which makes the damage increase even more.

You are slightly mistaken about the "zooming" thing though.
Flying category vehicles makes enemies get -1 to hit, not themselves. And the Tesla destructor is an Assault weapon, not heavy, so it doesn't get a -1 penalty to their tesla for for moving, like the Doomscythe does for it's Death Laser.

But your general idea is right though!
If you try to tesla something with a -1 to Hit shield, like ravenguard marines, you will likewise not activate tesla, even on a 6.

Except it's just not Cawl or Celestine, because the model is different, the fluff is different and they totally have a reason to be there since it's their bloody army which is pretty damn useless without them. Counts-as Domini are totally a thing, but some people prefer their Archmagi to be more stompy.
I would give my left mechadendrite for a generic Archmagos with an entire page of customisation and another page of variants, a la the 30k Magos Prime, but sadly all we got was an eternity of Mars-only fixed loadout Admech because Phil Kelly and the rest of the writing team hate us. It would take so little effort to fix Admech to their fun and decently powerful state full of flavourful rules, dammit.

Thanks for your help! I was planning on getting 3-4 boxes of termies and a pair of dreadnoughts for long range support but I'm not sure what to get next. I don't really like the dreadknight model so I'm probably going to skip it for now.

The Grey Knight terminator kit is by far the best terminator kit GW has produced in recent years in terms of bling and poseability. It's only drawback is that it only has 1 of each heavy weapon. I noticed this also by looking at the sprues. I'm trying to plan my builds ahead.. Should I bring two heavies for each paladin squad? I noticed most people tend to suggest Psycannons but I'd like to do some mix and match (for "flavor"). Buy three of those and some transports

Alternatively buy the Chad half of a couple of starter sets, or go looking online for the cheapest possible way to get a couple assault on black reach marine armies. The models are shit but they'll work, and that with a start collecting is at least playable if not necessarily viable. I've also heard Harlequins are a good low model count army.

I'd reccomend Crons.
2 statlines for the entire army.
All weapons are uniform to their model, there are no (few) options.
Vehicles feels sturdier than they are.
Can make solid 500/1000pt armies with 10-20 troops and 1/2 HQ.
Also somewhat decent at holding objectives and virtually no psychic shenanigans.

My Draigo has been taking names. I think I got some pretty sweet kills with Kharn too. From what I've seen at this point in the game, generics are largely relegated to buff bot status. Named characters are a different beast, however and can usually do both roles reasonably well.

Plenty. Heroic intervention is a things, let's you kill off fast assault units on your range support.
When things get tight and models are thinned out in the late game they do work cleaning up.

Shooting can also be nice.

All of these are on top of the buff and from inside the army, not as lone roving killers.

Fusion gun, laserlance, autarch skyrunner does work. Also I was able to joist a plane out of the sky that was fun.

Eh, grey knights are fine. They have a steeper learning curve due to fielding less models on the table but thems the breaks for fielding an elite army. Otherwise their dudes are reasonably tough for their points, can shoot well, can fight well and have a decent access to mind bullets (not smite. Smite is there for when you have nothing else to do or you're fighting demons). Bonus points if your friend likes aggressive armies as GK lends towards aggressive play.

Its about 1000 points depending on how you build things so it would be enough to play, however it has no HQ choices. If you watch ebay they go for $100 so its a steep discount.
