Thanks, but I need some work... Like I said, for my next batch i'm going to paint the frames of the trays light brown, so if I miss any spots with flock, It'll look better than just having the black peek through.

If I was doing a model for something like a Mister Rogers Neighborhood type show where it was going to be shown as if it was an outdoor shot even though it would never fool anyone, what would I do differently? I assume things like edge highlighting no longer work and a lot of techniques would be equally unhelpful.

Has anyone used Rustoleum Color+Primer for minis?

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-oz-Satin-Paprika-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-249068/100670404

I'm trying to paint tyranids, picture related.

Also, I was in Michaels and noticed that they had their "Tiny treasures" merchandise on sale. It's designed for cute dioramas, but there's some flock and gravel that's perfect for the grim dark future.
>>
>>54594648
I've tried rustoleum a couple of times. Avoid it, it goes on too thickly. If you're gonna go for cheap primers I would go with Krylon

Nice. Not too garish. I'd paint the body of the power pack the same as the legs and torso, just to stop the power pack looking like a black blob though. Leave the vents as is.

How do avoid brushstrokes when brush priming? I've recently picked up some Vallejo primer because Texas has about 2 months out of the year where you can spray prime outside with no issues(Late March-early April and late October-early November). Airbrush is not an option for me currently.

oh yeah, that looks way way better.

If I might suggest though, consider doing the stubble on the head by mixing your flesh color 1:1 with the hair color and watering it down a bunch, then applying it very thinly on the scalp. Eyes look awesome btw and I really like the pink scar. Not sure why I never thought to paint a scar like that before to have it stand out.

Any recommendations for medium? I don't want to drop $5 a pot for Lahmian if I can get a large amount cheaper.
>>
>>54598117

If you're going to do anything like that I'd go for light on dark and maybe do a strip across the bottom of the left-hand pauldron.

I think if you do it in a darker colour on the lighter parts of the armour it'll get lost.
>>
>>54601234

Not much. For all the metal models I've re-based recently I just used two-part epoxy glue.

Snip off the tab. File down whats left on the feet. Then drill a small hole in the feet to act as a well for the glue. It'll bond to the plastic better than the metal. So far I've had no casualties.
>>
>>54601324
You can get get liquid acrylic glaze medium at any arts and crafts store. Liquetex is good. Lahmian medium is just the same thing put in a small jar and marked up.

Be wary of what you're getting though. They come in gloss, semi-gloss, and matte varieties.

What's the best way to paint things without a base?

I've decided to start doing sub-assemblies (finally moving onto vehicles and elites) and I was wondering what the best way to prime/paint with a spray can (GW Chaos Black) was?

Normally I use the base that the mini's are on to hold and position for maximum paint coverage, but with the smaller pieces should I just leave them on their side and spray?

Aside from Ultramarines. Who even have a unit with official models named after that one time when Nids ate Macragge.
Or Scythes of the Emperor, whose fluff entirely revolves around that.
Or Space Wolves who got them in their Homeworld's oceans.

The BA/Nid rivalry goes mainly back to Space Hulk, it's only recently that GW pushed that into 'mainstream' 40k.

Not saying I don't like it, just saying the 'they are the only ones' part of your post rubs me the wrong way.

I don't like the Skitari Vanguard Helmets and I prefer the hooded Skitari Ranger heads.

Is there an issue if I make Vanguard with Ranger heads?
>>
>>54607984
I prime with GW Black primer and then just do a quick wash with Abaddon Black.

Red:
2x Layer Khorne Red. Don't worry about any of the other details on the model, just keep it thin.
Layer Agrax Earthshade
Drybrush with Evil Suns Scarlet.
Another Agrax Earthshade to darken everything a bit.

Shoulders:
2x Layer Zandri Dust
Shade Agrax
2x Layer Ushabti Bone

Then I work through and just do details from there.

Just hand primed an assault squad, and a rhino for my Red scorpions, and my biker lord of Khorne for my chaos dudes

Gonna paint the assault squad in CODEX APPROVED camoflague circa the Angstrom incident from the Badab war

ive just started the hobby and have chosen thousand sons, and already i am super keen to start building it up and developing my skills at painting and assembling, and one of the things i really like the idea of is a avian tzeentch themed daemon prince with feathered wings and a bird head instead of bat wings and a typical daemon head.

what models would be a good thing to buy bits of for the wings and head? there are a lot of winged beasts in age of sigmar though not too sure about what size is appropriate, same with the head.

>>
>>54612622
I work construction and one day I had to cut a fuck ton of PVC pipe. It was a big job so there was a specific station to cut all the pipe. Anyways under the saw there was a huge pile of PVC shavings that I thought looked perfect for snow. So I gathered up a big bag of it and use pva glue to stick it to my bases. It's really simple, get some pvs glue, use your shitty brush to spread it on your base however you like, then take a big scoop of your "snow" and dump it on the base. Let it sit there for some hours as the glue takes a while to dry. Then dump off the access, air off the particles, and there, snow.
>>
>>54612664
You can probably find some starter painter set at a local craft store.

A few thin tipped brushes and one or two flat head brushes should do fine.

a medium sized brush, a smaller one, and a smaller-smaller one.

>>

those are just fine for starters, its what I started out with
dry brushing isnt that advanced. if you really want to do it, get a drybrush. you dont want to use a normal brush for it, because it ruins it real quick.

well you dirty eldar faggot, it's all about right angles. You gotta learn by painting checks, then turning them diagonally.

Seriously though. Painting gridlines is for faggots. Orient each diamond by painting the edge lines for it first and then filling it out. Then paint the next diamond parallel to it by linking the edges of the new diamond with the first diamond.

Let me ask you this:
When does a plastic mini chip? If you drop it or if you just throw all your shit in a box.
If you take good care of your minis while handling and in storage, then the answer is "about the same".
If you just throw your bag of minis in a corner when you come home you are obviously gonna have a problem, Mainly cause it is a lot heavier, though. But you don't treat glass- and tupperware the same either, so...

Most younger generations seem to have gobbled up the GW propaganda concerning Finecast being 'so much better' than metal, which was obvious bullshit even then. But if you never had a metal mini, how are you gonna know?

GW's cases are literally the most competitively priced on the market. They're cheaper than the better options available from other companies.

If you can't even afford the cheapest foam on the market, you're going to have to go with something like KR foam in cardboard trays instead of a bag or case, or do a homemade option where you buy cheap foam and throw it in a tub, a cheap metal toolbox and magnetize your bases, or buy a cheap camera or gun case and use that foam.
